Here are the technique highlights taken from my most recent deadlift seminar at Base Gym. I discuss the fundamental cues for conventional and sumo deadlifts while Dinny J from Base Body Babes demonstrates. The techniques I use I have learnt from working with some of the best coaches and athletes in the world and I have successfully used these cues over the years to improve the deadlifts of all levels of lifters, from the very beginner to the absolute best in the world. If you find these tips useful and have any suggestions for future content that you would like to see from me, please leave a comment below.

This is a genius idea. Instead of the news or whatever shit they play on TV’s, this could save a lot of people.

@@-D-100 I haven't seen news played on TV in the gym but a lot of shit as you say for sure xD Especially bodybuilders posing or doing half reps in the gym.

This is absolute freakin' gold dust, I can't thank you enough for these tutorials you do. The way you are able to give so much information so clearly and without overwhelming the viewer really is a skill. No matter how much I think I am perfecting my lifting technique, when I watch your videos I always see ways I can improve, not just for deadlifts, but squat and bench press too.

for personal reference 0:56 bumbs down, knees out, shoulder blades down, head to ceiling PUSH the WORLD away // rather than pull 6:00 - 9:40 going back to conventional 12:07 back to conventional: taking the slack out of the bar 14:00 when thinking about posture think up and down NOT back and forward - elongate the spine = head to ceiling = extending the thoracic spine / retraction and depression of scapula *head to ceiling in deadlift means head as far way as possible from the barbell hence REDUCING the distance we need to travel 1) walk up to the bar; shins about an inch away from the bar, bars placed midfoot(travelling there throught the entire movement) *arms straight down(for me) as it gives the least ROM needed to deadlift the bar *close stance unless your thor 2)bumbs down 3)slightly push the knees out 4) scaps down = LATS on *use LATS (this will prevent you from pushing the bar away) = depressing the scapula = pull your armpit toward your pelvis + extend your shoulder joint = pulling the bar toward your body *LATS attach to the pelvis, covers the spine. LATS on = spine protection *Neutral spine is achived when (2)is achived. 5) head to ceiling 6) push the world away

Wow, it’s incredible that this type of information is free to us. Thank you Sebastian. I’m studying to become a personal trainer and have been having some troubles teaching people the right technique on the big 3 lifts simply, but after watching your 3 videos on them I have all the cues I need. Amazing. Best deadlift tutorial I’ve ever seen. Chris Duffins tutorials are a close second but the way you explain is so easily understood.

Sebastian has helped me tremendously. at 22yrs old his teachings and program made my deadlift jump from 270kg/595lbs to clean 302.5kg/667lbs in 6 months. It was slow and steady process with 12weeks of basic training and 12 or so weeks of peaking. I had never felt so strong and my body was ache free and fresh. In my eyes you are the best coach there is.

Excellent video, I think adding in a side view so people can see the shin angle, depth of the hips and shoulders in relation to the bar would have been icing on the cake. Thanks for doing this video.

@@naturing1863 There's a joke perpetuated by The Simpsons and other shows that because Australians are in the Southern Hemisphere and the toilet water rotates a different direction to Northern Hemisphere folks such as Americans, that everything in Australia "Down Under" is upside down.

Client Manager came up to me today saying she's "concerned with the way I teach deadlifts" and that "conventional deadlift stance has to be narrow, not wider and the bar is on the shins and arms need to be straight" when I was instructing my client. I asked her if she knew if my client has the mobility to have the bar on his shins, to not smash his knees as he pushes with leg drive, and if his hips were in the way for his arms to be straight. She did not know and had no idea why I was asking these questions. So I told her, "narrow stance and arms straight might be most optimal for deadlifts but my (2-week new) client is not moving optimally. He is in his most comfortable feet position, his arms is not limiting his leg drive, and he is deadlifting in his most optimal way without increasing his risk of injury." Client Manager still wants me to workshop deadlift technique to the other trainers so "I know how it's supposed to be." She still doesn't understand when I said, narrower or wider isn't better, better is better. Keep up the great work guys!
