A look way back into the old VHS archives and a cab ride on a third-series X Class (Clyde-EMD G26C) from Dunolly to Maryborough in the Victorian goldfields.
The train is 9152 pickup freight from Ouyen to North Geelong on the 2nd of January 1997 and we join X48 at Dunolly before running the thirty-odd kilometres to Maryborough Yard. X48 had ran down light engine ex Ouyen due to no loading and attached ten loaded grain hoppers at Dunolly.

Cheers Brenden, they're probably my favourite locos too

If you filmed 50 other engineers for that half-an-hour I wonder if there would be much difference in the way they drove that X?
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Possibly, but I suspect the differences would be very minor

Two best sounds in life. 1. When your fishing reel runs with a big fish at the other end:) 2. A locomotive powering up to notch 8 :)

Great old footage, Brad. It certainly was a different world back then. Much better until 911 came along. 70s, 80s, 90s. If you saw a train waiting to get the highball, just wander over and say g'day. If they had a few minutes before departure the driver would quite often say yes to a look in the cab. Even getting a cab ride didn't take much organising. I even got to release the train brakes in a SAR 930 in the Mount Gambier yard in the early eighties. You'd need ASIO clearance to do that nowadays!
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Cheers, it's certainly changed since and in some ways not for the better.

Please note, due to the way this footage was converted to digital media, the audio is only playing through the left hand speaker. It's less noticeable on external speakers but instantly recognizable if you're watching it with headphones. This is also the first of likely several 1990's videos I'll be putting up over the coming weeks/months, all of which have previously been uploaded on the channel in different videos, but I'll be going through and putting them through the editor and adding details and captions where I can, as well as duplicating the audio to feed through both left and right speakers if I can.

If you switch to mono audio (if available on device) it converts to both head phone speakers, evens out the sounds but it has are more cinematic sound to it. Still worth though.
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Interesting, I'd not thought that would work. I'll be looking into whether I can get it to play in both speakers for the next ones either way. Whether I have any luck in doing so is another matter

It’s a simple device hack that’s programmed into the phone but in wasn’t meant to be used that way.

Its not everyday that you get to ride in the cab of a locomotive so if you do make sure you film it.

Wonderful video. I wish this was still happening. X48 is temporarily stored at the moment I’ve heard?
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Thanks, X48 and X50 are stored in Melbourne along with BL26, G519 and G539 at least. I think X50's stored at the LPC while the others are all down near Gemco.
@lachlantrainvideos
@lachlantrainvideos 4 года назад
Greensleeves94 okay thanks for that. Do you know if it’s temporary? I’ve seen both X classes and G519 not too long ago. Obviously surplus to requirements at the moment like the XRs....
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Maybe, maybe not. The BL and G's would be the first ones to return I'd expect but with 9321 now in service, if the cascading of NR's to bulk duties gets going soon then there won't be much hope for them.
@lachlantrainvideos
@lachlantrainvideos 4 года назад
Greensleeves94 yep be great to see the NRs but it would hurt not to see the older ones. Hopefully they can be gauge converted and given to 707 like S306

such amazing footage ! I’ve filmed around the Maryborough stabling yards although I see it wasn’t really there at this time
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Do you mean the Vlocity stabling compound? It was built in the mid-2010's but I believe the area where it is had not long ceased being used for phosphate traffic when this was filmed.

She struggled a bit getting up the first grade (looks like diamond hill). They still use a lot of these X class locos in Queensland, Off memory I think QR has 53 still in use.
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
Gooseberry Hill coming out of Dunolly. The QR equivalent is/was the 2100's. One still exists in service as such with another 3 stored, 5 are in service as 2300's after being rebuilt while the remaining 15 were either exported or scrapped
@nathanpike3718
@nathanpike3718 4 года назад
A lot more in Queensland than 20, there 6 alone up in Gladstone. In full operation 2 of them run the ballast train, see another 2 occasionally running the coal train from Blackwater (I believe) & I think they were brought out by aurizon, occasionally you see one on the spirit of the outback. I’m not doubting you dude, you have been doing this a long time but I still reckon there is a lot more than 20.
@Greensleeves94
@Greensleeves94 4 года назад
There's a lot of similar looking locos of that style there with the 2150's, 2170's, 2300's etc. There's even the new 2700's being released now which are further rebuilds of the type with 8 cylinder 710's instead of the 12-645

@@PolarBear71169 September 11 Attacks really changed a lot of this stuff. Back then, you could just ask and they would just let you into the cockpit of a plane or the cab of a locomotive. Then 911 occurred and security for everything was dialled up massively. The world would be so much more different (most likely, even better than the current state it is in) if the September 11 Attacks never happened

I come from a family of railway workers, and if the drivers knew you wanted to become a driver and knew who you were they would let you up into the locos. Coming from Ararat to Korong Vale was a huge difference because of the population and we also lived opposite A box at the Vale. Bertie Gibson took me on a couple of trips. Y169 to Maryborough and the other trip to Quambatook (B66 T365), back in the early 70s. I wouldn't think you could do that now. I do know that the Victorian Railways had open days where you could actually go in the locos. If anyone has the newsletters,that the railways published every month back in the early days you would see the proof of what l am saying.
