Sandalwood from Mysore, India (Santalum Album) has been one of the most iconic perfume materials for centuries. I am sure you know that! But, did you know Sandalwood from Australia has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent time.
Today, we will look at the fine differences in the fragrance profile of both these materials and they can affect your perfume compositions.

Being a Sandalwood snob, there is lots to talk about on this subject, but you did a good intro on the scent profile between the two species - thank you Nikhil Bhai. I feel that Santalum Austrocaledonicum from Vanuatu is middle ground in terms of the scent progression and budget, between Santalum Album from Mysore and Santalum Spicatum from Australia, even though it doesn't have the lasting power of either of the two species. Santalum Paniculatum from Hawaii is a close runner up to Mysore, but if your budget allows, investing the extra 15% for the Mysore version would be wise. Overall nothing beats the scent profile, progression, and spiritual touch of true Indian Sandalwood. Zakir Bhai from Assam Agarwood has a 32 year old version of Mysore that is one of the best that I have tried recently, and beats all of Ensar's Sandalwood offerings ... combined, IMO.

We indians cant get enough of Sandalwood I think. In fact for me it is the only fragrance that I like to wear. And I have tried several oils but didn't like any of them. Although I must confess I have just started and I have to try a lot more. So do you have advice for buying authentic smelling mysore oil at an affordable price? What oil do you use regularly? Any links would be appreciated :-)

Yeah I use both Australian and Indian Sandalwood i honestly can't pick a favorite to be honest very much love them both. There's also Sandalwood Northern that we grow over here also known as True Sandalwood it's just a bit dry and also it's a bit expensive too. Like i use a lot of different varieties of Sandalwood in my compositions making fine fragrance and also the synthetics too. I still need to get New Caledonian Sandalwood i think that's about it but yeah i absolutely love Sandalwood that and Agarwood and Ebony Wood. We grow Agarwood over here too but I'm not sure what grade it is. When it comes to the aloes in OUD the best stuff comes from Vietnam and Indonesia.

There is also Santalum Album farmed in Australia. Your source Eden Botanicals has it in stock. It's of course not as deep buttery rich as these are harvested young and not wild and/or ancient like the album from India.

I wasn't a fan of Sandalwood at all, before I smelled the Indian type... It's so different from the Australian. Which to me is very ungrounding. It gives me anxiety and I don't like the scent. I find the Indian Sandalwood essential oil very relaxing and grounding, with a deep mystical scent to it. It also smells a little bit like sweat, but in a sexy way. And as you say it is very long lasting, even longer than Vetiver. I'm curious about the New Caledonian one, is it similar to the Indian or Australian oil?

Hello Nikhil Sir, I am happy and agree with the conclusiom that our Indian Santalum Album is better and is more beautiful when our childhood memories are attached with the fragrance. Also, Have you tried their Santalum Album which I believe is more on higher price side than the Santalum Spicatum ?

It would be interesting to smell the difference in two oud or musk based perfume oils with these two different sandalwood bases. Would you say the Australian sandalwood would make a more 'massy' or 'more accessible' base in such warm or complex attars?

Exotic Scents Even I like both. The exoticness of sandalwood is what drives me in. Given the fact that it's such a rare material, honestly I wonder why Indian government has restricted if not completely banned the farming of such amazing species. When people farm largescale in India, it will be of tremendous benefits for economy, job for jobless making India among the top countries in the world to produce sandalwood.
