For thousands of years, agarwood has been known as "The Wood of the Gods." First-grade agarwood can cost as much as $100,000 per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive raw materials in the world. Aquilaria malaccensis is a tree native to the rainforests of southeast Asia. The healthy heartwood inside Aquilaria trees is pale, odorless, and worthless. In order for this tree to produce any agarwood, it must first become infected with mold. So how does this infection process work? What is agarwood used for? And what makes it so valuable?

In India, sandalwood is similiar, but unlike agarwood, the wood inherently has a fragrance. It's wood is used as incense and soap fragrance. I had a sandalwood tree in my garden. The fragrance of the wood can be smelled even metres away from the tree! One night, when we were out, somebody chopped it and stole it. That's how prized they are. I miss that tree it smelled so nice :(

@@sohanprasad8989 Yes true loved for many years now, hopefully it will not die out, you know knock on woods 🌴🤛. Agarwood is highly revered in the seminal texts of Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam. As early as 1400 B.C.E., agarwood was described as a fragrant product in Sanskrit texts, and in 65 B.C.E., Dioscorides detailed several medical applications for agarwood. Knowledge of human-induced agarwood formation was recorded in China as early as 300 C.E..It is also said that in Ancient Egyptian civilization followed prehistoric Egypt and coalesced around 3100 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under Menes they smoked some beautiful Agarwood in pipes known as Moses tobacco. Those were great and wonderful times 😊❤🌟.

A lot of foreigners came to the Philippines to buy agarwood. They bought it for $6,000/kg at the highest. People in the mountain side went crazy and chopped these woods. We have no idea it was that expensive. We didn't even know that tree exists. People thought they're lucky not knowing it was actually around $100,000/kg. And those were really high quality agarwood, not like the wood in this video. The trees were huge and completely blackened. Really old trees found in the deep forest. Now the government banned people from cutting them.

Think of it this way, someone made a cheap knockoff of lamborgini and the quality is right around the same. The original lamborgini, though expensive, would still have a higher demand due to it's prestige and being the original. And besides just because you can make the resin of agarwood doesn't mean you made the actual tree, and concequently it's only going to slow it down. Just because a lot if phones are better and cheaper, doesn't mean the demand for Iphones would be lower, heck if anything the demand is higher than ever.

Oil doesn't sink in water. Yet, all part of real old Oud is fragrant, no need to be separated as most of cultivated inoculated Oud farmers been doing is separating the resins with the rest of the trunk. When you have to clean it, separate the resin from the other parts of the trunk then it's very young tree and or both young and inoculated. Most Oud sellers don't have enough product knowledge, as none of you own very old wild Oud trees like me. All Agarwood Oud end sellers I met the past 3 years are just knowledge-less people, Jakarta don't even have real Agarwood / Oud, they know nothing about the real sources, they are all just 3rd parties treating us main sources like a fool while they're the real fool. #Jakarta #Indonesia but that's cities, capital cities worldwide are just poor nature concrete jungle concentration camps of the real poor. But one guy killed all the other and take that chunk of wood. Eventually he was killed several day later when trying to sell that. That's what most designer fragrances are already . Most of them aren't all that great , and don't really smell like oud. There's plantations cropping up , and most do what you see in the beginning of this video.0:02 . They infect the tree with certain chemicals to speed up the process . It can have a blue cheese vibe to it , or smell like banana oil that was used in paint, or veneer . Doesn't smell that great. Not all new plantations are like this though. The older trees are still there, but not as many. Now real oud has a variety of wonderful smells that is attributed to it's origin. China is a huge importer of oud , which has caused many of the problems the oud hunters face today. There are ethical perfumers , attar makers who seek to sustain the lives of the trees instead of decimating the population and surroundings in which these trees live.

@Zyzz short answer: religion. Long answer the perfumed oil and wood use for religious ceremony like sprinkled perfume, incense and even carved into statue worth hundreds of thousands. Even the holy city of Mecca have yearly budget worth millions to buy this stuff. Almost every religion use them as perfumed incense or in any other form...Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Confucianism. That's a market of 90% of the human population. Also there are medicinal value...even the leaves are made into tea. It is like a living gold mine. People who grows them like us keep them in secret. Even selling them is difficult sometimes as many tried to become middle men to take a cut of the sale commission.

I’ve had the privilege to get a tiny vial of raw oud oil..... it smells amazing. I still have some and I am literally saving it for my wedding day or something.... it smells amazing layered with a jasmine single note perfume.
