During a recent visit to Vienna, I commandeered Mr Franz Brodl for a couple of hours to talk about Austrian armored vehicles, and the Panzerhalle collection of the HGM downtown. This is, oddly enough, part two of the talk. I'm sure I'll get around to traditional videos there later.

I had a brainfart listening to the fuel efficiency numbers - heard 1100 litres for 100 km on road and thought - that can't be that bad, that's an efficiency of 11km per liter.... Brain then went wait, it's actually 100 METERS per liter!

You could roll out 100 pick-ups for the same fuel consumption. Puts Sahel warfare into perspective.

I can confirm that too. In fact both the M47 and M48A1 had the same 1L/100m consumption while in convoy, on the road. Tankers from the Greek Army however had told me that it could average 1L/50m cross country...

Regardless/in-spite of any audio hiccups overall is excellent and extremely well done. Very informative and genuinely interesting to get the Austrian perspective. Also, he was a great choice for the over-view/discussion (may have been the only option, but either way he did a great job and was obviously/understandably very knowledgeable). Keep up the good work and look forward, as always, to what comes next.

The Leopard vs M60 comparison was cool, not many have the experience to really make that sort of comparison and you rarely get to see them side by side like that. The video comparison from the commander's hatch shows just how remarkable the difference is. Do you think you'll ever do an Inside the Hatch, or maybe just a short video, on the M728 CVE with the weird 168mm demolition gun? It's got all sorts of odd stuff on it and I'd be interested in what changes were made on the inside to accommodate it's unique task.

Training, training, training. Something that the American military seems to skimp or skip all the time when it comes to small arms. Meanwhile, the Browning has a design pedigree that goes back to the Great War, being an up-scaled M1919, which was an air cooled M1917, and it was meant to still run fouled to hell and rained on and with mud and beaten around by infantry, and feed the belt even when the cotton duck stretched.... and it had plenty of accuracy, having held the record for longest range sniper shot for something like 30+ years. The M85 may not have been bad... but it WAS up against the work of J.M. Browning, and it apparently used different belt links... which has gotta be really inconvenient if... or perhaps when... some goober in supply doesn't realize that the two are not the same thing, and sends you a truckload of M2 food.

Put me down as an American ex-tanker that likes the M85. I commanded an M60A1 in 3 AD for about 16 months and mine worked flawlessly. On the other hand, the M73 / M219 was garbage.

The m85 has a bad reputation in the US Army because they were used after their service life should have been ended and they were old and worn out. Our Battalion Commander threatened to court-martial my company armorer for taking a chisel to the rivets on our m85s. but after the new guns arrived and the performance was so much better He changed his mind.

Yes the Drakens were only armed with 2 cannons initially, as the special weapons treaty forbode weapons with self propelled or guided technology. They could carry air to ground missiles which was actually against the treaty, but what for do you have state secrets. After the Slovenian war in 1991 it became clear to everybody that only having a few dozend rounds in a fighter is only symbolic, and Austria declared the treaty obsolete without gathering consent, but nobody objected, and got guided Sidewinders.

Had not recognised or felt that my tank has run over an ambulance iltis kind vehicle that must have hidden behind us. The batallion commander asked the driver to step ahead who had hit the car. He awarded me with kid words: I have never seen soldiers of the first company running that fast than in that second when they had bailed out. Only Idiots of the first company try to find shelter behind a tank. All were laughing except the medics, supply and repair guys from the first company that were with us at that moment, but we had much fun that evening and later on we had to take the medics with us cause without medics no shooting.

The military units from the 18th century and earlier often still exist as traditional shooting clubs in Tyrol there and commemorate the Tyrolean rebellion of 1809 against Napoleon to name one example. Sadly the audio "malf" makes it a little hard to hear Mr. Brodls opinion of conscripts serving under his command. I think many people of countries without conscription have the misconception that conscripts equal incompetence or vast inferiority to professional soldiers. The biggest difference imo is payment and that conscripts (in peacetime) stop doing the same thing earlier. (not before being "ready to use" but shortly after) Sure you can get conscripts that are uninterested or stupid, but so you can with professionals. Little personal example of comparisson between conscripts and professional soldiers: After infantery training i was trained in AAA, and with us were soon to be (AAA) officers doing the AAA training (not as our instructors but getting their training refreshed for the second or 3rd time). After a little time, they suggested a competition of setting up the AA gun from transport to ready, "to see who is faster". (Our "conscripts team consisted of 1 electronics engineer, 1 future geography teacher and i have no clue what our 3rd guy went on to become.) As "trained professionals" they were confident to beat us, but they did not. To their little embarressment we beat them by quite some time. (They weren't beating us in live shooting either...)

Or potentially a comparison between sci fi weapon payloads, their real life inspiration and any practical issues you could imagine with said weapon system or details you feel the creators may have overlooked, and this is just a small snippet of what's possible as I'm sure many other would enjoy hearing your grounded, experienced opinion regarding this subject matter.

I think a replacement or rather a supplement for the Leo's in Austria could be the Japanese Type 10 (yes they are willing to export it). It is a very light, manouverable and small MBT which would do very well in the mountains. It basically has the same firepower as most Nato tanks with an high pressure (like the M256A1) 120mm and an autoloader up to under 4s reload time. It could fit the roles the Kürrasier filled back in the day.

The main thing I'd be concerned about with any JSDF vehicles is interior crew space. It was my understanding one of the main things that led to the development of Type 61 and Type 74 was Japan's experience operating Shermans and Chaffees in the 1950s - supposedly some crew had difficulty with the Sherman's controls and general ergonomics, being as those were sized for Americans and even then pretty roomy, whereas Chaffee was just about the right size for a typical Japanese crewman of the time. When we offered them Pattons the cavernous interior of the things were in "can't reach the pedals" territory. Now, I assume the average Japanese soldier is significantly taller now than they were in 1962, but I'd still be worried that even one of their modern tanks is going to be pretty damn snug on the inside if you're approaching six feet.

Good video. The audio could be better as Franz was a bit hard to hear, but I raised my volume whenever he spoke. Pretty sure you realized that after the fact. I suspect in regards to the question about the 50 caliber raised in part 1, the long effective range was useful in the mountainous parts of Austria. Certainly, sustained volume of fire is not a strong point for that weapon when compared to a rifle caliber weapon, as the Brits pointed out, and it is a bit weak and slow firing for modern AA work.

Ah. The Leo2A4. I loved that beauty. Not the insides, though. Holy hell.

well, internal space has its cost. M60 weights in 50t for the same size as leo2a4 (55t) with significantly lower protection (about 1/3 of protection of Leopard 2A4). If you would increase leopard 24´s internal volume to a similar level of M60, it would weight in 65+t. And if you add the weight increase with A5, A6 and A7 of about 12t, you would be rivaling Challenger 2 TES pushing the 80t mark. There are reasons, why M1 Abrams is a good bit heavier than Leopard 2 in their base configurations (61.2t).

I like to think that Austria is much like Finland, with it's fairly small population, all sorts of own original things (like weapons) and neutrality even we both could fairly well be 'part of the west'. But now I might start to think otherwise because our (finns) neutrality-virginity is lost due to stupid and political nato joining our government decided to do.

You can bet all you have, that if we austrians would not be surrounded by NATO (and Switzerland) but share a border with Russia like you guys do, our population would have been for joining NATO long ago. This aside, while Finland is free to join, our state treaty forbids us from joining any big military alliance. So we would need France, the UK, the US and *Russia* to allow it...

@@laurisikio That's a good point too , who wants an US military base in his country ? The only thing I find strange is , that all this mostly "left" governments want to join NATO , give weapons , raise their military budget , ect. This guys always claimed to be pacifist's , they could'nt kill a fly .

@@nirfz We could change it with a absolute majority - at least the treaty with Russia is only a memorandum, so not a binding agreement.
