During a municipal indigenous speech contest in Southern Taiwan, we interviewed two students from the Amis tribe who agreed to share a little of their native language. Taiwan has 16 indigenous Austronesian languages that are actually taught in public schools to indigenous students, and they hold language contests to reward and motivate students.

I heard awhile ago that the FIlipino's ancestors are from Taiwan and I honestly didnt look into it and didnt know what to respond to that but a couple of days ago I started googling the Amis people and the others and I was blown? I cant find the words. I always wanted to know where my people come from! And now that Ive heard the similarities and have seen the physical features, I am now more convinced! @@dailyviewstv5323 Yep, and Filipinos should know that Aetas and Ifugaos are completely different starting from looks to culture. Many Filipinos still think that they're the same. Aetas are Melanesian (First Migrant), while Ifugao are Austronesian (Second Migrant). Filipinos ancestors are Austronesian, which means Igorot/Ifugao and not Melanesians or Aetas. Austronesian drove off Melanesian people into the mountain areas in the South.

Interestingly, the main branches of Austronesian languange are 1. Formosan(F) and 2. Malayo-Polynesian-(MP) Malaysia,Indonesia,Brunei , Phillipines (MP). MP is subdivided into WMP-western malayo-polynesian and EMP-Eastern Malayo Polynesian- Samoa, Maori, Fuji. Our farthest austronesian relatives to the west are found in Madagascar which is nearer to the African continent than to us. The distance between Philippines and Madagascar is 8,922 kms., whereas its Madagascar distance is more adjacent - 500 kms- to the African continent.

In fact, there are 9 branches of Austronesian: Atayalic, Bunun, East Formosan (which contains Amis), Northwest Formosan, Paiwan, Puyuma, Rukai, Tsouic and Malayo-Polynesian. The last branch is the Austronesian branch that is spoken outside Taiwan. Malayo-Polynesian is the biggest branch in terms of number of languages among the others that are spoken in Taiwan.
