Actually, Did you try programming 68080078AH ? Because that part number interchanges with other racks including AC as a replacement. It thinks your old part number vin is ac and you need to type in the ah code since your rack is now a ah and not a ac then it should write.

Randy there is a Chrysler mechanic on you tube under (MotorCity Mechanic) who is excellent and obliging to help. Maybe you can go in and ask him for the solution to your problem. He explains it just like being in a classroom and will hold your attention to the end. Just a suggestion

I work at a mopar garage and I’m pretty sure that partial vin you’re talking about is just the last 8 that’s all we ever use when looking up vehicle specific parts, and when connecting to do flashes or proxy alignments.

That scan tool is the must get tool for working on car especially newer cars this will save your butt on anything you work trust me work on cars on the side and it save me soooo much headache and less piss off customers

When programming, you need a power source connected to the car. The voltage must not get under 12v! It can brick the modules in the car, and then you need to replace them.

At last you got a high-end scanner! This is going to save you a lot of money and your going to be able to take on a lot of cars you couldn't look at buying before. Some Chrysler products require a mfg PIN and access to their mfg software for a VIN rewrite of some of their modules -- I think the security module is an example. One of your viewers with Dodge experience should be able to answer.

Randy, you need to take the Car to a ECM repair shop and they will match it up. I do this for a living, they have the Software to do this. Call them first to make sure. Thats it, I have done this many times.

Anytime you are doing programming - attach a battery charger to the vehicle. Some programming can take HOURS and if the battery goes low during that time, bad things can happen.

Some modules need to be new from factory for them to be able to reprogrammed. Im not to sure with dodge but on newer end fords and gm vehicles that is an issue with parts like that. Its either that or you need to go through the witech software to be able to reflash the vin back into the module. Honestly your best bet is to putting the original back on to save you the headache

great job randy for trying n trying everything that s the point, if you sell it I would put the other rack in the car n if someone wants to deal with it but it's almost new car and looks great, I wish I could get a obd scanner to fix a problem I have with my ecu on a 95, god bless

i think all this complexity is becoming a thing in modern cars because. A) prevent people from using aftermarket and DIY fixing B) to prevent criminals from being motivated to steal the car and chop shop it on Ebay.

.. I'm just guessing but looking at the number I think the last 6 number are the model codes so IC3CDF is the model of car and it's unwritable hence the space I think you need to type in the ten digits that's all .. if you can't that old number must be stored somewhere in the other modules you may have to change it there

i would try to delete it from the car with the computer and then start reprogram it that what you going to have to do but let me tell u dodge is one of the hardest ones to get into there computers if u can get a dealer code to get into it u will have it been there and had to do it on a dodge ram and it sure was fun playing around with the setting on computer

That is nice scanner. But you do not need to do or buy updates, unless you are working on a car (model or year) that is not in the scanner database already. So maybe, when you obtain a newer model car you would have to.

get in touch with the scanner maker and see if they have any idea how to solve this

just an idea for the steering just do the last digits (the ones that don't match between the 2 units)

Quik tip. Use the stand on the autel to hang it on the steering wheel. Might make it easier when filming inside the car.

This might sound stupid, is the rack you are trying to program a canadian vin, maybe the machine only recognizes U.S vins.

Randy - those "VINs" for the rack look more like simple part numbers, since AH would be a later revision than AC. Check the old rack to make sure it doesn't have a "VIN" etched or stamped on it. Or a barcode on a sticker/plate.

I'm super glad you got it. I was looking in the autel suitcase you had on your past few videos on your left.

I don't think you can reprogram those numbers because they appear to be the #Parts numbers for the rack and pinion itself 68080078AC, 68080078AH. 1C3CDF is the first 6 digits of the cars valid VIN number identifying the manufacturer and vehicle. I think the problem is, there must be a central build sheet that has the part number recorded ending in C that needs to be changed to H or replaced by a one that has a similar part number as the original. Thanks for sharing all the diagnostic stuff, it's very interesting. Next time you film stuff on your desk you might want to take your name tag off or blur it out when you edit, especially after all you just went through with the clowns causing problems with the city/cops . Good info ! Never did one of them relearns. May have sport steering set up or different turn radius. Number sounds like an assembly line number.

Dr.D here in sunny Canada I can not see that replacing a rack can not be done because of a computer you said that you can access the the dealer site do some reading and see if the computer has been replaced,might help or contact Chrysler directly, hope this helps.

That 6808*****AC is a Chrysler part number. The AH rack may be the wrong feature

Randy you have to learn the original vin to the scanner takes about 15 min then u will be able to write it to any module after that

Randy, I'm far from fluent on automotive electronics so this may be a stupid idea, but when reprogramming the VIN for the rack and pinion, did you try the VIN number from the donor car? It can't hurt to try...

You need to go to a dealer that knows what they are doing. Steering racks are a wear part and fail all the time. You need the correct Chrysler scan tool to reprogram the vin into the unit. The dealer will tell you it can only install the vin into a new unit, but that is not true. Any used part can be reprogrammed with the correct scan tool. It used to be called the DRB scan tool.

I had a very similar problem with a existing dash light after much research. I was able to rectify the problem by using some rubbing alcohol to clean off right above the area then at this point I used approximately 1 inch of 3M electrical tape directly over the light and I never had a problem with it again.

Sorry but on these new cars everything is special any more I paint Bumper . See what Mike says about the Code issue or just R & R the rack and pinion . Put price on it move on at least you learned a lot and have special tools fix future issue on either Vechicles .

There has to be a way to change that vin number. I just changed a rack in a car as the seals went and yes it's a older car but what if something happened to that rack there has to be a way to change it. I know I'm behind you might of already addressed in another video. But to me things go bad you get 200,000 mi on that car do you have to drive around with a light on dash because rack had to be replaced?

I'm wondering if the firmware in the rack module is a different version causing the mismatch in programming, one is AC the other is AH, might want to look in on it an see if there's any firmware updates and relevance in that? Also if both racks are the same exact version would swapping out the module only be viable if its easy to do so?, the old rack was under water and might have internal damage that will cause it to fail after a bit of use?

I had the same issue programming a ecu on a 01 jetta. There is a white sticker on the rack with a p680...... number on it right hand side of sticker. Try typing that number in with and without the last letter. If it does not work, You probably just have the wrong rack that does not interchange to that model. I usually change the racks by lowering the subframe by a jack in the back and loosening the front bolts to get it to tilt with the back bolts out. With the car on jackstands and wheels off. You probably have the standard duty suspension and that rack came out of a non standard duty. Seems like the car is not accepting the part number, but I think you have to type the part number off the rack sticker. Since that number on the rack itself seems to fill in the whole box on your programmer.

Both are 16 digits. Type in the 1C number first then them the digit number.

So new cars are pretty much Local Area Networks on wheels, that you have to carry out network diagnostics and troubleshooting on? Crazy. No wonder the market for classic cars is going nuts! Good way to ensure otherwise good cars are junked and otherwise useful parts are thrown away too.

dude i got a idea for u if the original steering rack is no good take off all the electrics and tie them up in under the car so just the electrics is the only things u have will that work

When all else fails just jab the dash bulb out with a screwdriver and call it a day. LOL

Can you go in and reset the module for the rack itself? Either once that unit is written it can't be changed, as some have noted you need a dealer level code to change it, or possibly what you need to do is program a different computer in the car, the ECU, body control module, somewhere needs to be programmed to recognize the number on the rack, rather than try to change the rack to match the car. I'd be shocked if Chrysler made these so you cannot put a used rack on them. Well, then again not that shocked *fry.jpg* as they want you to buy new parts. But there has to be a way to do it. Sometimes all you can do is walk away, forget about it for a little while and do something else, and come back fresh later and then the solution pops right up for you.
