The Hooking Block, or Hooking Hand in Praying Mantis Kung Fu is one of the most misunderstood and most improperly executed techniques in Kung Fu, often recognized for his ascetics but not for its effectiveness.

I use to train and practice Wu Chi Tao & Northern Long fist style Lohan Shaolin Kung Fu I achieve a black belt in both styles . Starting the 2nd degree level training and practice. The first form I was taught was a 7,star 🌟 Pray Mantis . I love the hooks the way you just more or less yang them towards or to you it has a major effect on people's balance . And the hooks with the sweep the strikes are so much different if you have no knowledge of the system or style there not easy to counter. The forms I knew & learned before were great . Very powerful and effective . But once I started train the 7 🌟 Mantis I spent most my practice of forms and focus on the 7🌟 Mantis . It's long and short techniques . Love the hooks following them up with an elbow.

Well said, and your 100% right, Sifu Bryan Barnes from the Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu School. Look forward to your next video.

I was lucky enough to have been Ho Yin Chung's first private student when he came to America. Your explanation here is spot on. Very few of the newer practitioners of mantis understand this. It's a nice simple and realistic use. The whole pressure point use is a nice theory but the people who teach it as such, do so because they incorrectly assume that it's a higher "understanding" when really it's not effective that way at all. Well done on the video.

Since training Mantis Kungfu, this hooking technique has become second-nature to me to great effect in self-defence! :)

I've watched this video before, and don't recall you bashing other martial artists by name. With all the great information, the title is disappointing. Did you recently change the title to attract views? A Sifu or Master should focus on teaching and not bashing others. That is in poor taste.

This is one of several mantis hands. Depending on the form or san sau, the index finger may be pressing into the pressure point of the elbow or neck. It also depends on whether it is an inner or outer diu (keyword snatch). The form of the hand is adapted to the situation and the opponent. One size doesn't fit all in mantis. Additionally, the grip works best as an attack. It is very difficult to catch a punch from an uncooperative opponent. Jab, jab grab can catch a boxer off guard, but grabbing someone's jab is near impossible.

pressure point attacks are less likely to work than catching a jab. very few people can make them actually work.

I saw videos of the northern and southern mantis style, they didn't impress me at all. It's the question I've been asking for a long time, after I started training martial arts, is kung fu really effective in combat? Does kung fu go up against Muay Thai, BJJ, Boxing, Krav Maga, Catch wrestling and even karate? I'm fed up with people not even questioning the real effectiveness of kung fu!

Many of the mantis takedowns are used in Wushu Sanda.

just curious does Mantis form Kung fu have any ground techniques or defence? i like it visually ...
@HolisticKungFu
@HolisticKungFu 5 лет назад
Yes. Most, if not all of the small and mid circle joint locking taught in the system works in standing or ground positions. Most of the ground movement is covered in the drunken style part of the system. Obviously it's not covered as thoroughly as systems like bjj that specialize in ground fighting, but thoroughly enough for practical combat.

I found a manual for this style and thought of teaching myself for the first time solely from this. We have had had teachers pass through so everything I know are various fundamentals finished off using youtube i.e. Hung-gar, Wing Chun, White Crane, taiji short-staff, and a form of Lien Bu Quan that matches nothing on youtube. The manual states that the 18 Elders does not have acrobatics or high kicks so this is perfect. Only problem is it does not show how to do this distinct hand. This video was the best at showing it out of the four I've been through. The manual states that it is used to feint an attack without committing. Any thoughts on this?

Willem Els, thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. Yes, this technique is also used to feint an attack. 7 star mantis is mostly offensive, so even blocks are done offensively. In this video here, at about 0:07 you can see the left hand throw the hook at the same time the left kick is fired out. This is meant to draw the attention and the guard of the opponent up while you kick low for the "peaches" m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZJQkEstAjOM.html

ITS NOT A BLOCK! Tong Long Zaau or Tong Diu Sau, neither means block. Study the poetics and manuscripts of the style and you will see the origins of this style have no blocking. Using blocking as a premise or starting point is false.

We don't have time for this. You are talented and skilled. Show some forms, put yourself out there, grow your school. Avoid arguing semantics in the comment section, we both deserve better. Visit for tea if you are ever in Ontario
