With each view video I watch, I become more and more impressed with Deborah Feldman. She is so smart and insightful about people, their culture and religions and how that impacts each of us living in this world. Her decision to leave a life she knew was not only brave but a gift to all of us as she shares her journey with us.

I just read Deborah’s book Unorthodox and after several days can’t stop thinking about it. What an bright, brave and curious young woman. To leave all she knew behind, at such a young age w/ a little boy, for a better life took such courage! I wish Deborah all the best. Thank you for educating all of us on this mysterious religious sect and their culture.

funny. like her i have not, since traveling the world at age 17, and also b/c of the polarization during the vietnam war era, felt fully truly american in touch with americaness or american values. grandparents came from poland, russia, galicia, but i grew up in the suburbs. still, at the shul, all the grandparents generation had accents...
I dont want to judge this woman but in a another interview, she said that she moved to Berlin and found that germans are not monsters. I agree with her I always believed you should say Nazis and not germans because there were good germans. However she says everyone is so nice and carefree yet she says she doesn't tell people she is Jewish. She is scared because there are nazis there ithere. If she really feels there are good people there which I am sure there are, why would you hide your Jewish identity. Not all Jewish communities are extreme like the one she came from. Is she a self hating Jew now? Like I said I cannot judge her

Living in nyc And working with orthodox jews I would say that Orthodox women are very happy!! If anything i would say that the men work very hard and the woman go shopping all day 🤣
She's done it in other interviews as well. Having a new accent is a way of acquiring a new identity. It's also a way of gaining sympathy from the audience she most admires. It's called "co-changing." It can be a sign of an inferiority complex.

For all those who "love her books," or admire her determination, etc. Her books and life are a case study of the process and MO (modus operandi) for an assimilating self-hating jew. She's to be pitied rather than admired. So many guilible people.
Yeah okay. Typical response from a man who doesn’t respect a woman for being her own person. She’s not a “self hating Jew.” She a self respecting woman who escaped a repressive community that is in essence, a cult within Judaism.

She exaggerated the "oppresiveness" of her religious community in order to justify her "escape." Among other things, she even got a nose job (after this video), as part of her new identity, in order to erase her ethnically identifiable features. She's wanted to escape her jewish identity ever since she was young as evidenced by when she first asked her grandmother, "I'm I 100% jewish?"
@@Leif208 Yeah, okay....Whatever you say. You don't know her personally, so this is all conjecture and opinion on your part. I think you want her to be something she isn't. There are plenty of documented cases who have left the Hasidic community for many of the same reasons she did.
@@gasaholic47 I'll admit, I didn't intend to go this deep (at least about this very minor accent thing) and I'll also admit that it is just my opinion. And, I'm sure there are others who've left for similar reasons, but my main point in even addressing it is the unjustified harm I believed she's caused, not only to her Hasidic community, but also to use her as an example in order to expose the "assimilation racket." I'm sure most wouldn't consider it worth any interest, but, it's played a central role in (and will increase our understanding of) both Jewish and it's interaction with (and impact on) modern European history (including the holocaust). I think it's worth understanding.
If religions produced better people .... . and more men who treat women well to start with....;... and were used to make this place a better world ....;... I would have more trust in them and those who run them...

She's so rude to make fun of her family and traditions.She talks about them as if they're strangers,as if she didn't grow up secure on all that for the first nearly 20 years of her life.Does anyone on here actually know that Satmar-the community she comes from- is actually outstanding in the Jewish world fir their worldwide human assistance organisations.They have organisations/ groups of professionals and laymen who are ready at any given hour to help anyone for Free with any human need.Can u imagine that??? She's a self-hating jew. She's expressed her desire to no longer be considered a jew as well. Rather than just leave her faith, she's chosen to destroy it, so that she can be justified in leaving it. Rather than confronting her inferiority complex by building her self-worth within her actual identity, she's chosen to acquire a new identity (by associating with those she most admires), and by distancing her self from that which she most despises.
I do not think that the real Deborah has left anybody.. she was no where before and l fear that she is still no where. Lord almighty, much talk and she fails to project the basic human awareness of having left behind her humans not just ideas and disciplines to rubbish.
