Our bodies are as unique as our fingerprints, and how we fuel them is important. But can an elimination diet really make that big of a difference?
I'm Tay. I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 31 and also have an autoimmune disease called Alopecia, which causes my hair to fall out.
I've researched elimination diets extensively and I'm here to share what I've learned with you, although I'm not a doctor and you should discuss any dietary changes with your doctor before implementing them.
We'll cover:
What is an elimination diet?
How does it work?
What should I eliminate?
How long should I do an elimination diet?
What can I eat?
When do I reintroduce the foods?
How are elimination diets and autoimmune disease related?
How are elimination diets and autism related?
I'll also share a couple of my favorite go-to snacks and recipes.

***EDIT: Since posting this video, I have learned more about the horrific origins of the term "aspergers" and have since stopped using this term as well as "aspie" which is a derivation of the word, and renamed my channel. In future videos I will make sure to address this issue when referencing any materials that use this term. If you are interested in learning more about the origins of this term, please be warned that you will be reading very upsetting information regarding TRIGGER WARNING child violence. I apologize for any upset or harm I may have caused by using these terms without knowing their origins.

You are pretty much describing the Autoimmune Protocol- AIP. I am at close to day 120, and have had bad reactions to trying to add stuff back, but man, I feel so much healthier in so many ways that I don’t mind the restrictions

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis age 18, I was completely burned out. At age 30 I did a total cleanse and elimination diet quitting sugar, dairy and gluten. Got off meds within weeks. Still took me YEARS to get my gut balanced. I get massively affected by stress; for instance the onset of war in Ukraine in February this year really triggered my digestion and inflammation.

So glad to hear you’ve found some practices that are helpful to you! And I also operate similarly with stress. I tend to carry those events with me.

😱 = my reaction to learning you were a baker that put down gluten. I have a strong inflammatory response to wheat but I’ve been complacent due to poor life choices and circumstances. This video has inspired me to do better so I really appreciate your creating it. Killing caffeine might be the hardest thing as coffee seems to be the only thing that blunts meltdowns and keeps me in regular good spirits. Coconut fluff sounds like an amazing treat for late night cravings which also reminds me I should get back on intermittent fasting.

ooh i've tried intermittent fasting before and had good results. Have you ever tried bulletproof coffee? It's coffee blended with ghee and MCT oil. Helps sustain energy and is supposed to help with focus. My bottom line is: listen to your body and let it tell you what it needs. It's a practice that gets a little easier every day. No guilt when you make a choice that doesn't line up with what your body wants. Just take it as information to use for the next time you make a similar decision.

@@MomontheSpectrum Bulletproof is awesome and I love The Mentalist dark roast - I had been doing grass fed butter but need to get back to ghee. Brain Octane is amazing for mental clarity as long as you don’t have too much which causes gastric upset. Such a great/healthy personal philosophy on self awareness and self compassion. Thank you for those tips! 🙏

I used to have trouble when I was drinking 3+ coffees a day and sometime drinking a cup quickly. Now I drink coffee that has no mold in it (mycotoxins, bulletproof is one brand, so is kicking horse), I drink it slowly so that all the caffein doesn't hit at once. When it hits at once I get shaky and it stresses my body. So I split my first cup into two small cups one at 8 am, one at 11. Then another half cup at 1 and another at 3 then no more coffee. It is the equivalent amount of two normal size mugs stretched through the day. Or just sip at it slowly and make yourself take two hours to drink it. You'll have to figure out what you can get away with, Maybe you really can't drink it. Try having none for a few weeks to see the difference, then reintroduce to tolerance.

What wonderful information! Thank you for putting this out there. Ive heard a lot of this info before but it never clicked. The way you explain things is wonderfully clear! I have a hard time with eliminating sugar because of convenience. I dont notice when i get hungry most times until its too late and im hangry and feeling like im gonna pass out. I wish i was raised somewhere where its convenient to eat healthy foods and where healthy food ideas come naturally! I feel like because of how i was raised, i only know how to make unhealthy meals when im on automatic mode

Question - When you took out sugar, did that include all added sugar including things like condiments or do you mean just snacks?

I was put on an elimination diet when I was 16 and then told to eat what these days is close to FODMAP (over the years worked out foods that I react to and some can be unexpected with one being rosemary), I have eaten according to that for about 3 years now (have learned how to cook and there are more ready to go things than there were when I was growing up), and for the first time in my life I'm not anaemic (and a big reduction in headaches and gut aches/digestive issues). I have more sugar than I should but figure that I am only having it within foods that are fine for me to eat. Like you said the first couple of weeks are brutal but because I already knew what I react to I did a slow change over when I started and made sure that I knew how to make replacement items so that I was setting myself up for success, these days I am used to looking at ingredients lists before I buy and have been doing it long enough that I'm not worried about 'missing out' by not eating the things on my intolerance list - prefer not having the digestive issues though it has taken me a long time to get there.

My favorite book on this right now is by Dr. Amy Myers called The Autoimmune Solution. She offers a lot of scientific evidence based on her experience and training as a medical professional.
