Autism and Sleep - Tips to get your child with Autism to Sleep

It's absolutely crippling on you and your child, if you have a child who does not sleep. Dylan didn't sleep through the night until he was about 6 years old. I spent many years researching the right kind of environment that was conducive to sleep. Here I talk through the boys' bedroom and our night time routines. All of these things have helped massively for Dylan and I am happy to report he is now sleeping through the night.

Hi! What a great video you've made! It helped me get a better understanding of what difficulties children with autism might face. I would love to see more videos of you playing with your sons and stimulating their speech development!

This is so comforting... just hearing ur voice. So re- assuring. Only if i could hit that like button more than once. Also yes have a 2 yr old who i suspect completely on the spectrum as i have a check mark on every single thing almost u mentioned about dylan. . Hes got the over sensory issue so far diagnosed by the dr. N sleep is def an issue. All the sensory needs + when not wanting to hug or held @ the same time . We as mothers n humans can be challenged in ways we can hardly imagine at times. All i want to finally add is ur amazing. I have just found u online. Ur urge to explore ur childs world is just so vast n unlimited. If only ur child could c it 1 day.. he would never have enuf words to appreciate . Good luck!

Great video, thank you. My son is three and diagnosed about 6 months ago. He was always the best sleeper until three months ago. He goes to sleep easily. A lot of times he even asks “take a nap” but he’s waking in the middle of the night and doesn’t go back to sleep. 😭 we’ve tried keeping him up later and it still happens. We have a good nighttime routine, but I just don’t know. My husband and I started a channel “theheiligs” about his journey from a micro preemie and now autism. I’ll be watching your videos! Thank you. ❤️

Like the routines that you incorporate into Dylan's sleep preparation, and yes, weighted blankets do help to calm the child down. I know I could never sleep myself without at least a comforter on me which would drive my parents bananas during the hot summer as they tried to keep me cool, usually mom would strip me down to my underpants, so I would sleep and not struggle. Yeah, no central air conditioner at home just open windows. Then come in later that evening and pull the heavy comforter off the bed leave me with just the top sheet.

This is awesome. I have 4 children, still figuring out their additional needs but it’s possible they’re all on the spectrum and I probably am too. What strikes me about your videos is how calm and laidback you and your family appear. Dylan reminds me of my 8 year old so much but I’m as anxious as he is, so are my daughters and this really doesn’t help matters. Our household is running on cortisol most of the time! You seem to be thinking so clearly and articulating much that I know to be true but don’t really have the headspace to think through right now. It’s inspiring me to bang my GP’s door down again for a referral for assessment for myself. Will add some of your ideas to our ‘bedtime kit’ and routine. I feel like I know so much in theory about autism but it’s really great to see someone more level headed than me breaking it down so thank you!

Hey there , Well thank you for saying we look calm, I sometimes feel like I am a duck on water. Feeling calm on the upside while paddling frantically underneath. I try my hardest to make my house as calm as possible as it does have a knock on effect with the whole family. My partner Andrew got an assessment recently and they said he also had ADHD. Our middle son is getting assessed at the moment and I think a lot of what Andrew was struggling through he saw in Luca. Getting a diagnosis for him was so relieving.I hope some of my ideas can help with the dreaded bed time routine. sending you much love Tara

I WISH as a child growing up I had these tools put in place by my mom and dad...although I most likely did not or do not have autism, I am highly anxious, sleep terrors and other nightime difficulties ...As I lay here at 2 in the am watching this. LOL..I do know how to strutcture my environment but need a small amount of xanax to help the racing thoughts. I especilly love that you built that amazing space in your attic for Dillon..wow..who would not be able to chill out there? My background is in psychology but never really understood autism. As I watch others creators and now your videos I am learning so much. Thank you so much for sharing and I am so overjoyed to see that your family remained intact and even grew...Well done both of you..and your kids are lovely.

I'm learning a lot from you so thanks so much for posting these videos! I have two boys so I was already thinking about getting a bunk bed, lower to the floor for my almost one year old. I'm going to look into calming lotions and sprays for my oldest. He has a very hard time sleeping as he tosses and turns throughout the night. But I have noticed he likes comfort. Even if it's hot in a room he will bundle up with his favorite blanket he had since he was a baby. When he takes baths I sometimes ask if he wants the sleepytime bubbles (lavender). I love the way you did your sons room! We moved a couple months ago so I still have yet to do my boys' room but now I will try to make it as cozy as possible, thanks:)

Thank you for your input Mum. You are amazing.

I have ASD (to the point that I carry earplugs around) and this is accurate. Sensory equipment is really good... it’s just straight calming. Oh, and baths and the chat about the day for ‘verbal’ spectrum peeps is really good. I’m anti social, but I love a good bath. Oh yeah and I get stressed out about stuff, and at night I does come out. I found that weighted blankets and calming music helps. Rare helpful advice. Keep it up!

This is great, it seems like you really love your child! I notice with some mums and/or dads who have special needs children, their kids seem quite uncomfortable and stressed all the time, restless with behaviour issues. I wonder if it's because they're not helping their kids wind down, learn how to deal with their emotions and I notice there's sometimes a huge lack of affection and patience which makes me sad. :(

Another thing I found is black out curtains help my children as well! They never had an issue going to sleep but sometimes my 4yr old will randomly get up at 3-4am to play Xbox downstairs. Wow.. am actually doing many of these already and now seeing this video made me feel happy about my motherly instinct to deal with my autistic boy. Though he is just 2 year old, but yeah the sleeping and bathing are bit issues since the beginning. Now the warm bath, the lotion massage, the memory foam bed, the extra soft cotton blanket, earthy colored interior are working wonders. I had somehow felt that spring beds are not for my family, so got memory foam in all bedrooms and everyone loves to sleep on it.

Carpet? No urination issues? I had to replace the carpet three times and finally put in hardwood. Sleep was evasive and when he was nine I finally told his pediatrician that it was either him or me and got a prescription for ambien. Melatonin was making him moody. My son is 24 and still with me, so can relate to all that you do. So many people don't understand that brushing teeth, getting a haircut or shaving are all big challenges.

We have now the carpet in the room, but I have realized I need to safe-proof almost all our home, when he gets angry, he throw everything. We still haven’t completely started yet. The system here in Denmark is so slow and they have no idea how to start it and who have to do what. But I had help from our doctor and now it has been pushed to go faster.

Hey that’s really interesting that Denmark are behind. You can still have a beautiful home just maybe no glass 🥰 can you see the triggers that make him angry? Autism and sleep is a very common thing. Being that I have septo-optic dysplasia, which caused me to be blind and autistic, and I also have complex PTSD. Fun fact, blindness can cause sleep problems too. I’m sure a lot of people know that complex PTSD can cause sleep problems too. Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and even depression kept me up all night before I worked on my healing. Nowadays, the depression doesn’t keep me awake anymore. I usually like to listen to meditation music when I sleep. I also have a weighted, blanket, and some stuffed animals.

I thought that 'white' was considered to be over stimulating and can be highly disturbing, whereas blues, greens, purples, browns and black are soothing and comforting, as per Carolyn Feder, Designer and the founder of Sensory Interior Design. Feder believes a holistic approach can transform a ‘hostile’ space into a healthy environment. Many children on the spectrum have a difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep due to their high sensitivity to stimulation that others are able to filter out. Colours are as disruptive as sound, scent, texture, etc. I have taken some of this information and posted it here and just wanted your feedback on the colours and the noticed affects on autism and children.
@gazsto9510
@gazsto9510 3 года назад
In this article it does state that duller colors with white and gray undertones have a calming effect on children in this spectrum, but then in the same artical it also states white could feel depressive, excessively bright and tiring on the eyes of a child in this spectrum. So it's a little confusing to find a balance. What colors are good for autism? Pale pink has been nominated as the favorite color for children with autism in the tests conducted. Moreover, cool colors such as blue and green also have a calming and soothing effect. Primary and bright colors must only be limited to the toys in their rooms. renketkisi.com/en/the-use-of-color-in-behavioral-disorders.html

ok so I have been thinking a lot about this video. after last night where my son only allowed me to have an hour of sleep, I said that's it! I went to the store, got him a nice heavy quilt, a soft throw, a really nice pillow (it's nicer than mine lol) a new set of sheets and mattress pad. I came home and rearranged his bedroom....I did our normal bedtime routine, I added the sleep lotion awhile back. I did all these things and my son has fallen asleep at 8:10 pm! he's nearly 3 and this almost NEVER happens!! I can't believe, I'm ecstatic. I took your advice about removing the spring mattress too. I'm so happy, he didn't even fight going to bed! I think he even recognized all the new comfort items I got him because he actually climbed into his own bed to sleep. He hasn't done that since I took out his crib. you are a lifesaver, thank you so much!!!

Thankyou sooo much for taking the time to make these videos. They are such great help to me and wife. Practically as well as emotionally. Quick question - my son sleeps really well. He sleeps from 7.45pm to a bout 6.30am which is great as were are a family who wake up early. He is 3 years old, I’m worried this well regress as he gets older. Was this the case for you? Or anyone?

Hamilton Nwokolo thank you for your comment and for watching the videos. If your son has been a good sleeper it is most likely he will continue to be a good sleeper. Dylan never slept through the night. If he regresses it will be because he is struggling with the environment around him if your son has been a good sleeper it is most likely he will continue to be a good sleeper. Dylan never slept through the night. If he regresses it will be because he is struggling with the environment around him this can be helped and eased by reducing stress and extra stimulus. Not all children with autism a bad sleepers sounds like you’ve got a good one 😉 x

Some children have a problem with producing too little melatonin and they need that to sleep. With out sleep Their bodies will not grow they will be grumpy and harder to do the much needed therapies with them. We did it for two years and it helped get dylan in to a rhythm . The dr prescribed it and we monitored all the time x

Ironically I'm on the spectrum. Can never sleep till gone midnight. Watching this while I can't sleep. Yes I have tried lots of different things like spray's, lotions, music, antihystamin tablets and lots of other things. I normally meltdown at night as well. Only thing that works is staying awake and watching RU-vid. Please could you help me I'm 15 by the way if that helps

One thing that has helped me is having a small toy or item to hold while you try and sleep. It gives you something to fiddle with so it doesn’t feel like you’re just laying there doing nothing

It's so exhausting. I haven't had proper sleep in 3 years. I'm 30 and the stress of an autistic child is unbearable. I have grey hairs sprouting everywhere even down below. I can't get her to eat properly either. My mental health is at risk. I feel like killing myself just to get a break.

I didn't want to show Dylan at this most vulnerable also he would like to be filmed. unlike some other autism channels I try to protect my son. If I had a camera looking at him he would freak out so I am afraid all you get is me. I hope you can understand this

Insomnia is caused by excess histamine. There are many studies linking autism and excess histamine. All you need to do to get ANYONE to sleep is get their histamine under control.
