Autism characteristics can sometimes be hard to figure out as many times some behaviors in childhood can be neurotypical. In this video, I invite Andi Putt who is a pediatric speech-language pathologist, founder of @mrsspeechiep, a neurodiversity advocate to discuss autism characteristics and provide explanations of characteristics submitted by our community. This video serves to educate and is not a replacement for personal medical or developmental guidance.

This is so informative! My son is two and has said 5 words, including mama and dada. He said the other three words once and hasn’t repeated them yet. He lines things up and does unique things for him 💙. We have an upcoming checkup, but I feel like it’s not taken as seriously.

So glad it was helpful. yes voice all of those concerns at your next visit! And if you feel your child's clinician still isn't taking them seriously you could always seek out a second opinion. Sometimes providers do miss things and you know your child best ❤wishing you all the best!

Thank you so so much for this conversation and videos included. I'm a year and a half into this journey with my son and I wish I saw this video MUCH earlier. So so helpful and educational.

For an adult, could being expressive with the hands, be a form of hand flapping?

using hands in an expressive way is different than hand flapping. Hand flapping is usually a form of self-soothing or a coping mechanism, so it's usually mostly noted during times of stress.
