When I found out about Aspergers and started to realize stuff about myself, and I decided I wanted to go get a professional diagnosis. I started "scripting" the interview in my head for a good 3 weeks. Not because I was trying to influence the outcome, but because I had never been to a psychologist before and It helped take away some of the anxiety so I wasn't totally unprepared. Although, when I was going into the interview and during the interview, my pulse was ~150 and I had insane anxiety, so I don't know how much it helped. But it helped me remember what I was going to say at least.

If you don't want tipo don't go. You know yourself more than anyone. Keep watching these videos and take notes. Also, if you join a group for autistic people, or online community, I hear they are quite accepting, and you don't need an official diagnosis. Unless you need paperwork to prove it for work, or to get meds, you could learn a lot online and with books, and learn tricks what to do tio help you cope with living inb a world made for neuro typical people, not us the neuro divergents. Having a therapist who is well versed in neuro divergence. Good luck!!!

A lot of neurodivergent people do that kinda thing. Theres lots of theories as to why but my favorite is the idea that it might save energy when picking things up. I do it at work when im recovering shelves. Im not dx with asd tho.

Hi, I know this is an old comment, but I'm sure others wonder the same. I recently realized that I'm autistic. I'm a woman in my late 30's. My mother said the same as yours. Many on the spectrum self diagnose, at least firstly, as we're so commonly missed or misdiagnosed. If you relate to it then you are most likely right. What I know about my mother is that it isn't that she doesn't see it or believe it, it's that she doesn't WANT to believe it! There are many reasons for that, and I found some good articles in searching online.

I've recently been diagnosed with autism, and these are awesome tips! I was so stressed and anxious during the time it took from my first appointment to my final one when I got the result. I live in Norway and it took a total of 3 months, had interviews, verbal and non-verbal tests and filled out different forms. I have a problem getting across important information in an interview situation, so I wish I had taken notes before I got there, did it for my third appointment and it helped tremendously. I got my official diagnosis back in 2015 over 3 sessions. First was a consultation second was the actual assessment that took about 3 hrs and then they had me come back a week or so later and told me my results. The assessment also showed I have clinical depression (which I’ve dealt with majority of my life) he suggested I go back on meds to help that and my anxiety. I found it helped a lot that I brought one of my stim toys (a stress ball in the shape of a brain my mom gave me)

When I had to do my diagnosis, I had to come in at 7 am, and I was worried the night before, so I may have gotten to sleep at 2am because of that. I hardly stay up past 1am now, which is good. I realized in my diagnosis papers they said that I had atypical responses. Like, when I had been told to answer what grief means, I had said "to mourn someone's loss"... made me facepalm so hard after realizing what I had said. xD

hi Dan i am (as far as i know) a neurotypical who is a psychotherapist encountering autism/asperger's frequently among clients whether it is the person him/herself or their children and other loved ones; maybe you could do a bit on how aspies go through different developmental stages and how the expectable challenges each life stage presents can manifest for the aspie in specific ways; trying to get up to par fact-wise ASAP but mainly i really appreciate your attitude and joy in living and wanted to shout that out; it is a true joy watching your episodes
@0blivvy8
@0blivvy8 Год назад
Hi Alix! I love Dan's channel and I hope it's ok if I recommend some other great ones too. I love Autism From The Inside, Paul was diagnosed later in life and gets deep into all different topics and has guests too. Mom On The Spectrum, Taylor is a woman diagnosed in her early 30's. She puts together great resources about autism and even has groups. Yo Samdy Sam is another great channel. She studied psychology and gets deep into the scientific side of it. Many on the spectrum had signs that were missed as children, particularly if they're older or without intellectual impairments, and especially women. One thing I think is really interesting about development in autistic people, is that many went through a regression as toddlers! Many of us were missed as toddlers because we didn't show all the signs, or they didn't understand it as well back then. There seems to be a big shift in stages upon reaching adolescence, about middle school age (12 or so). The pressures from peer relationships increase and change from when we were children. This can result in feeling overwhelmed, which results in breaking down crying, lashing out screaming etc., or shutting down/ withdrawing. Girls are very good at masking and pick up on it young. The earliest I can remember is about 4-5, and I know I watched/ studied people to copy their behaviors, body language, speech, facial expressions, etc. So many girls learn to mask quite young, and quickly master it. Boys mask too, but it may be to a lesser degree. The masking results in physical and mental exhaustion and we may shut down. In my experience, they saw this as depression. Yes, I was depressed, but now I understand why! Trying my absolute hardest to appear neurotypical yet greatly struggling in every aspect of life. Having to change who I am to make other people comfortable. Knowing that I was different, but nobody believing me. The stage of young adulthood, when we're to be more independent (18-early 20's), can be difficult too and many will shut down then. Jobs can be extremely stressful and overwhelming in many ways, and we can struggle to hold them down for many reasons. Also, many start dating then and encounter additional relationship difficulties. I'm in my late 30's and only recently realized I'm autistic. I'm hoping to get a formal diagnosis soon. I can honestly say that my whole life has been a struggle in every area of it. I often had difficulties that others didn't notice. For example, I hated school, but made great grades and was well behaved, so nobody listened to my requests for help. The stage of adulthood, 30+ can also be a big struggle with all the added demands of life. Many of us have been masking for so long that we don't realize we even do it. This would result in extreme exhaustion/ shut down and in searching for answers, many of us who missed early diagnosis are diagnosed later in life. I hope this helps and thank you for the work you do!

Thanks for making these awesome videos. We believe that my 15 year old brother may be Autistic possibly, or something on that kind of spectrum. He's always been "different" to the rest of the family, often said to be "quirky". In the last year or so of school, he's also suddenly started really playing up. When he was in primary school, he would often have these huge meltdowns, where not one person could even talk to him till he calmed down, and now in secondary school, he is getting into trouble multiple times a week. He likes to wear his headphones the majority of the time and when he sits down to talk to you he does this fast twitchy leg shaking thing. He has always struggled to make and keep friends, currently he does have a couple of friends (one being bipolar) that he has stayed friendly with for quite a long time. We feel he is someone who can be easily lead, and he sees thing in a very "Black and White" way. Also, he absolutely cannot handle failure. We have been on at his school for months and months about getting him some help with SEND, and we did have to fill in forms witho lots of check boxes, like the test you mentioned. Then we hear nothing for months. So after more issues we asked again, and they sent the same form to fill out again. It's so frustrating. We are told there is such a backlog so it can take a while. I did say to my mum that perhaps it would be a good idea to speak/take him to a doctor instead, as the school have been pretty useless so far. He is doing his GCSE's next year, so ideally we'd like him to get any help beforehand.

Hi Dan, great content you make. My question is what is the benefit of an official diagnosis? I am 46 years old and almost sure to be an aspie. My AQ-Score on the test you linked to in your previous video was 44. My main problem is to deal with difficult clients (I'm an technician for security systems). I've no problem with the honest ones, they really appreciate my ability to spot and fix technical issues in no time. But then there are these with hidden agendas, for them I'm an easy prey. Especially when they complain about everything just to get a discout. That really freaks me out and makes the situation worse. That drains me completely and on my last encounter of this kind last week I needed two days of sleep to recover. After the worst incident of this kind I wasn't able to work for a week. So is there any kind of help to deal with this problems or is it just the diagnosis and thats it? I'm from germany by the way. And again, thanks for your videos.

So I took a test from psychology-tools.com and scored 32 out of 50. Today I just took the Ritvo Autism Asperger diagnostic scale (same website) and scored 35 out of 42 (14 and above being an indicative of an ASD). I’m defiantly interested in seeking for an opinion from a doctor or therapist although I am afraid to tell my girlfriend what I’m scheduling appointments for. My boss is a Therapist himself so I might try to wean in the convo topic whenever we get a chance to talk. These videos have been very helpful and definitely peaked an interest in what may be an explanation of certain things I experience on a day to day basis. Thank you.

In my experience they interviewed me first asking me various questions about things I do, then they went through with my parents about my life and past and anything my mum picked up about me, then they have sent a person to my school and watching me while I learn to see how I act in social situations, I’m not sure what else to expect, I haven’t got my diagnosis yet but I got 50/50 on the AQ test, it’s just a matter of time.

I’m here because a close friend of mine has autism and I wanna be his friend and understand him better, but now I’m beginning to think I might be on the spectrum. So many things in my life I assumed were my OCD (which runs in my family) May be linked to autism. After doing research a few days ago I learned that people with ocd are almost 4x more likely to also have autism. I fit some of the symptoms: for a long time of my life I wore the same thing everyday. My friends use to call me a “cartoon character” because of it and it was a joke for us. I use to get extremely stressed when I would have to style my hair differently cause I also did my hair the same way everyday and when I wouldn’t slick ever hair down with hair gel, I would get so mad and upset I would punch my wall. I get really anxious in loud places and I get very jumpy with physically touching anyone, and I’m terrified of germs and getting sick, which is beginning to affect my teenage life. I’ve been called “annoying” and “rude” for getting upset with someone coughing or sneezing around me, and I just wanna know what’s going on inside my brain. Thank you for reading this is you made it this far.

I spoke with the office earlier today and asked if I should bring any notes, pics, etc from childhood. They told me not to bring anything, that they didn't need it. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing that they dont want my notes and such.

When I got my Aspergers diagnosed back in late 1990's, I had the diagnosis spoken to me. I never retained a memory of word-for-word of what she said to me. Written would have been much better, and my parents got the written documents, and I dont have those notes afaik. I am aware of a possible additional condition that outlines the complication I have with the spoken word called APD (Auditory Processing Disorder), but I need to go get that diagnosed so I will make sure I will get it on paper when I do. Because most places and people dont understand that it is vitally important that I have instructions written to me, and has always been the case all my life, but I could never convince most people because I didnt know that APD was an actual thing until a wek or so ago when someone mentioned it in your comments. Most people dont take my word on it when I tell people I need things written down and/or repeated... they usually just get mad at me and lecture me about how I was not listening, even tho I was giving them the best that my attention can give them. I just cant perfectly retain/process spoken words. Videos are helpful because I can replay them again and again if I need to make sure I hear the message. Thank you for these videos Dan!

Is it possible to have other autistic traits but not have meltdowns ? I suspect my 5 year old has ASD but he has never had meltdowns . He cries quite quickly but it’s more of a broken-hearted display than a full blown meltdown. I would appreciate anyone’s opinions on this ?
@Dancinglemon
@Dancinglemon 6 лет назад
Katie Garrett some people on the spectrum never have meltdowns or some will have them really rarely, it’s a spectrum for a reason. I didn’t have meltdowns beyond crying at firework displays when I was little but growing up, I remember very clearly having one or two when I was really really overwhelmed. The clues would be in why he is crying, is he crying because he is overwhelmed or in a situation where he is having some sort of sensory overload? Because that is more likely to be a meltdown than just a tantrum. Ultimately, if you are worried about him, educate yourself like you’re doing now and keep an eye on him. If you suspect ASD then maybe take him to a doctor as well. Best of luck!
