yeah sorry let me just undo years of childhood trauma. Thanks for curing me! /s For real tho, I am still in the process of sussing out what is a mask and what is my personality. They've become meshed with each other so much over the years that it's gonna take a long time to unwind it all.
@AIRBUZZ2007
@AIRBUZZ2007 2 года назад
@Hannah Klein Well here’s how you can tell it’s masking: Burnout and tiredness after, as well as feeling like you’re not being yourself. As someone who also happened to have a horrible childhood as well, I try to refuse masking because it adds on more to that already hide mental burden. Again, masking is really unhealthy, and in fact, there are some parents who force their kids to mask for their own abliest reasons, which is sickening (like my mom does)
@freddie-xm5yw
@freddie-xm5yw 2 года назад
@@AIRBUZZ2007 i agree with this! But I think what they were saying is it's not that easy to just stop masking, especially if you've been doing it for so many years. This is something I relate to a lot.

At my wedding we had a break after the ceremony to have something to eat in another room (the church's library) and something to drink before moving onto group photos with the guests. Then we left for photos, had some snacks and beverages with our video and photo crew and then went back the reception. Ended it early because, we had waited till marriage and well, we were DONE waiting. Some dancing, but not a lot.

so i know a common autistic trait is avoiding eye contact, but does anyone just like stare into people’s souls so they think you’re paying attention? (am trying to figure out if i have autism in addition to my adhd, and i figure its a good idea to ask autistic ppl about their experiences in addition to my own research)
@madcow3417
@madcow3417 2 года назад
In the past I tried staring deeply into a person's nose. Eye contact is the last straw for me. I'm already listening to a person, trying desperately to tune out background noise. I have to gather all those syllables into words, then figure out what the words together mean as a sentence. Finally I have to figure out if that sentence contains things I'm supposed to remember, or if it's just stupid and needs a rebuttal. Trying to figure out eye contact during all that and I'm just screwed.
@jordana4158
@jordana4158 2 года назад
Yep. No blinking, just really aggressive eye contact. I was always told I wasn’t autistic bc of it
@tikitak7672
@tikitak7672 2 года назад
Eye contact feels like spears are being priced through your eyes. I only look at them if I really need to. Other than that feeling I do it unconsciously. I thought I was actually going a good job at making eye contact until I was told that I still look at the person, and not their eyes. I was crushed. I thought I was doing so well looking normal.
@kapraki
@kapraki 2 года назад
eye contact is physically impossible for me. even looking anywhere close to the eyes - I have to look at something else other than the person a lot of the time
@Kira_Martel
@Kira_Martel 2 года назад
Yeah, totally. I feel like it's a sort of 'swinging to the other extreme' for me. I know I suck at eye contact so when I try to do it I end up doing it too hard, because it's hard to figure out where that "correct" neurotypical middle is. Sometimes I'll try to count to three and then look away, but that doesn't always work because I find it's hard to actually deeply listen _and_ perform correct eye contact at the same time.

I work with an eight grader who has strong Autism and adhd (I'm not sure if these are the proper terms apologies). It's so hard to keep her at work and I am trying to find a way to make math fun for her, but it's math. I don't have any training, I just volunteer during my internship hour at school, so I don't really know what to do to help these kids. I mean, they are in 8th and 7th grade (about 13ish years old) and don't know simple arithmetic. They got left behind because they weren't as good as everyone else and it hurts me so much that this can happen.

I believe I am an undiagnosed autistic and I would like to get diagnosed, but if I tell my parents I’m afraid that they will see me differently (I will no longer be there daughter, I will be “the autistic one” “the daughter with autism” and they might not believe I have the mental capacity to live on my own or get married one day because of their possible biases against autistics) idk what to do. Should I get diagnosed and risk them seeing me differently or should I get diagnosed when I’m older and not tell them? (For reference I’m 16 and have believe I was autistic ever since I was 12ish but before that I always knew I felt different to the people around me.)

Get diagnosed right now. There are certain things that an early diagnosis can help you with and your parents too. For starters autism and other neurodivergenteces often look like one another and can be mistaken. (Not saying you do but it could be a possibility you have other things as well or something different) Diagnoses will give you accommodation that you should have had already under the Americans with disabilities act, you don’t know how they’ll act and trust me autistic people aren’t good and predicting how neurotypicals will react to something. But even if they do a proper diagnosis is still worth it, it will help you so much in life. If you’re nervous stim for a bit before and after you tell them it helps calms down the nerves. I hope this helps you and good luck!

Since a lot of people in the comments are autistic or suspect they are... please help me with a question I have. I highly suspect I'm autistic, but I'm not 100% sure. I never did the tip toe thing, but I ALWAYS walked on my heels, like all the time, like, my-toes-would-not-touch-the-ground kinda walking, I learned not to do this because it ended up wearing out some of my favorite shoes, but when I'm around the house I sometimes walk like this still. Could this be because I might be autistic? I started suspecting this because my dad has some very clear indicators of the neurotype, and my cousin received an aspergers diagnosis when he was very young. (I know it's just the 'tism now, but that was his actual diagnosis at the time)

*MASKING* I did the autism tests 2 weeks ago and scored high. One question was "do you repeat what you hear on the TV?" I answered NO, thinking "of course NOT" Yesterday I realised that I do it ALL THE TIME and I was totally unaware of it - I cram the words into a question or a statement to MASK the fact I am doing it. I was so good at masking it, I didn't know I was doing it.

I know I don’t have autism cause my friends and family say I can’t possibly, but it’s weirding me out that I relate to so much stuff and understand it. I am going to get tested for ADHD so maybe that’s it...

You could still be autistic. So often when people think of autism, they have a predetermined notion, and often they are thinking of various co-morbidities. They may also have no idea that it’s a spectrum. So make sure to tell whoever is working with your diagnosis that you suspect autism (which often goes hand-in-hand with ADHD)

Nah because my parents make me and my sibling do the autism walk every year and the whole time I’m have a overstimulated meltdown. And so is my brother who was diagnosed at three, and me who isn’t diagnosed and probably will never be. This disappointed me when I started to realize autism speaks was a peace of shit, anyways trying to convince my dad to not take me to the walk this year so I don’t die.

On that last one, You're lucky your mom will let you do that. Mine will talk, out loud, in a manner that seems like she is talking to herself, but expect me to listen and respond, and frequently gets mad at me when I don't giver her the validation because it can instantly stress me out to respond to nonsensical information. I'm pretty sure she has ADHD with a touch of the 'tism, while I am very 'Tistic with a lot of HSP and a touch of the ADHD. Her presence is frequently so very toxic for me - Actual Boomer with little in the way of breaks or understanding or consistency.
