Our Autistic 7 year old is learning to use pecs. We have been teaching him how to communicate using pecs on a communication device for many months and find we struggle with him focusing and making correct choices. Often times I stress about him being able to understand what is expected. We also wonder if he is dealing with vision problems.

Hello, me again. So sometimes as an autistic adult I experience periods of being nonverbal. A SLP friend showered me a cheaper app called SimPODD which I think you can customize. It’s easy, cheaper (subscription) and it has color coded display!🙏🏼 often when I’m in a meltdown or just don’t/ can’t talk, it makes it easier to communicate because I can see the pictures better. My SLP friend took me into Walmart (I hate Walmart from a sensory standpoint) and ended up having a meltdown. SLP friend helped me not only calm down enough to use my iPad (SimPODD app) to communicate with her but it became more bearable. Have a lovely day!

Great job working of picture discrimination. Some suggestions... once he is able to identify the marshmallow out of a field selection of 2... increase the field selection and change up where the marshmallow is.... this teaches him to scan for the marshmallow. Also... look into a condition called "left neglect" he seems to gravitate to the right. Also... try to set the buttons further apart.... this helps to determine their intentions. If the buttons are right next to each other it's easier to make a mistake and hit the wrong button... if they are spread out further you can see the intention of where they are trying to click. Also try to keep the buttons to the right of the screen..... not sure if he has left neglect.. but it's worth a try to see if it helps. Look into it. Feel free to ask if you have questions!! I am a speech therapist Some things to consider for left neglect: - do you ever see him crossing midline? - does he seem to ignore the left side of whatever he he working on Look up left neglect and drawing a clock... you will see what it does to the perception of the individual.. it's like the right side of an object is not there. I'm interested in brain science so I find this stuff very intriguing Also one a activity that may help him is matching pictures to objects

It’s been a little over a year now since we started PECS and my son is just now mastering it. We use the cards but I’m trying to switch to the IPad and for some reason he’s having trouble with it as well. I think he likes pressing the buttons more than worrying about what’s actually in the picture so for now we are sticking to the cards. I know you were using the cards at one point too and I can’t remember exactly what happen with them but Children go though so many developmental stages if it didn’t work before maybe now it might work then you can move up to the iPad. But You guys are doing great don’t give up.

You May be right. I think it’s so much easier for us to use a device but if he’s not ready I will definitely go back to the cards 😔💙

Aww hang in there it will filter through eventually some how. Autism is very to work out even verbal. My daughter is 20 verbal but mind doesn't click. She still forgets to tell me she hungry. She doesn't know how to fold clothes She doesn't know how to do her hair as in comb or brush it. She can't go out to visit nanny. Shopping is difficult handling money is difficult personal hygiene is difficult. So much other things I tried so much to teach enough to function for daily life but its not worked. Yes I worry so much what will happen when I die who will look after her. My mum is 85 my brother 59 doesn't understand at all he just want money She don't even like her uncle at all. Her dad abandoned her a week before her 4th birthday said his family comes 1st never heard from again. Relatives are far away not close to them due family issues from the past. So vulnerable it hurts and makes me very sad. At least you have family that raise him. Your simply the best my mum I know just keep going you and hubby Sister are his voice.❤💯🥰

Can it be that Christian does not want the marshmallow at the time of the pecs training? Look up "Incidental Teaching" method. This method basically waits for a child to initiate an action and then uses the momentum (establishing or motivational operation) to channel it to the desired action. For example, Christian wants a banana. He goes to look for it, but it is out of his reach (by design), so he grabs you to get it for him. At this point, you get the ipad and present him with options (banana and milk). He will be motivated to select the banana (which is what we want), and you praise his selection afterwards.
@ROCKNSTIMS
@ROCKNSTIMS 3 года назад
We have done this method and I would say it’s our current daily life method. For Christian it’s still hard even when he brings me a banana and I present the pecs he will still choose another option at times. I have been prompting when needed.
@borninussr7242
@borninussr7242 3 года назад
@@ROCKNSTIMS He is likely getting the desired item regardless of his actions. Him performing a desired action should be the one of very few ways he gets access to the item. A response cost concept comes to mind.
@ROCKNSTIMS
@ROCKNSTIMS 3 года назад
At this time he isn’t getting reinforced until he gets an independent correct selection but it requires a lot of prompting before that independent selection

@@ROCKNSTIMS I am reading a research paper for class and it outlines PECS training as follows. Phase 1 teaches the physical exchange, which consists of picking up a picture of a highly preferred item and releasing the picture into the hand of the communicative partner. Phase 2 teaches "persistence and distance," and includes teaching the participant to remove pictures from the communication book and finding the communicative partner at increasing distances to make the physical exchange. Phase 3 consists of discrimination training, in which items of low and high preference are introduced and the participant is taught to choose a picture corresponding to a preferred item when the picture is presented in an array of pictures of preferred and nonpreferred items.
@ROCKNSTIMS
@ROCKNSTIMS 3 года назад
Yes, and he technically is in phase 3 but since he is not discriminating correctly, the correct thing to do would be to go back to phase 1 or 2 to get that independent discrimination. This is what his team is probably going to be doing as well as us at home.

I would first explore what you were talking about with him just being able to successfully touch a target. Start with something large like a ball and then move down in size to something the size of the PECS. I would also explore if he is more successful when he isn’t having to cross the midline, so start the target practice on his dominant side then explore having him cross the midline. Was he successful is choosing correctly with the physical PECS? If not I would return to those. You could run trials with the physical PECS where you vary the distance between them. For my son we started with them near us and then gradually increased to where he had to get up and walk across the room to get the correct PECS. That not only helped with intentionally choosing the correct one but also with going to get his words to bring them to us. Hope some of this helps. I’ve been watching from the beginning and he has made so much progress. I completely understand your frustration though.

Hey! I think you doing fab, is there anyway to move the pictures in the screen so there is a gap a gap between them? Creating a colour contrast. So it would be Marshmallow, black space, toy. Maybe because both pictures have a white background he’s seeing them as one? Just a thought x
@ROCKNSTIMS
@ROCKNSTIMS 3 года назад
With proloquo2go I don’t think so. His old program (pecs phase III) did have that option. If over correction doesn’t work for him I will have to go back to that program to help him understand it a bit easier 💙
@rebekahogilby2112

Ahh right also another option would be to different colored backgrounds on the picture - nothing to bright or it could be distracting but enough to create a contrast for example pale pink and blue?

So good the pecs on the devices. This was relatively new when my son was small and we had pictures on cards. My son has pathological demand avoidance profile and he hated pecs and would rip them and throw them everywhere. Thankfully he is fully verbal now

My son will get distracted when I work with him. I try to keep his attention for as long as I can, but once he starts getting frustrated I give him a break and try again in a little while. He finally started his ABA and so far he's loving it.. Christian will get it I'm sure. Be strong 💪 love seeing your videos they are very helpful !!!
