The actress playing woo young woo actually refused the role because she was afraid to misrepresent autistic people but she accepted it after awhile. Also she researched and talked to people with autism

I heard she also majored in psychology in college so that probably helped in creating this character. I was somewhat sceptical at first, but I do resonate with her most of the times. It's a pretty decent autistic representation I think, I do appreciate the effort put into researching and understanding autism, and I think that is reflected in the drama.

If I'm not wrong, she doesn't have conversation with autistic people, she refrain from looking reference from real people or existing potrayal because she's afraid it might offend people. So she's only research from the book, conversation with professors and autism care professionals(I could be wrong how they called it in english). So the character Youngwoo would be just original.

The drama didn't just portrait an autistic character, it also brought so many political issues into the light. I have to give props to k dramas that take their stories seriously to help the audience understand how the society is dealing with modernism and popular cultures among different generations. It was one of the most inspiring shows I have watched so far this year. Thank you for your review and your thoughts!

I absolutely love her. I was skeptical because, again another neurotypical playing an autistic character, but after I learned that she first rejected the role for the same reason I was more intrigued. I watched the first episode and I was sold, the character is exactly like me. The way she walks, the bullism experiences, the attitude, the stims, I also have a special interest in animals too (Insects and reptiles). It's so refreshing! I also loved that they addressed the "Asperger problematic term" and where it came from. I could speak for hours about this show but from what I saw (I'm at episode 6) I'm in love and Woo Young-woo is one of my favorite autistic representation now ♡

@@goblinzed3078 "Neurotypical" is not "everyone who doesn't have autism". Most, if not all, successful actors and musicians are ND with a great likelihood, in particular gifted, although a portion is narcissistic, as far as I can tell. Same goes for Freddie Highmore playing an autistic in Good Doctor: I saw him being carelessly described as "neurotypical" but he is definitely ND (gifted). The autistic community (generally speaking) needs to up its game as far as other NDs go, most often only fellow autistics are recognized as ND. I don't know if it's out of genuine ignorance or because most just don't care about other neurotypes. I personally care about autistics and see our resemblance but the interest in not mutual.

I get your point but we have a lot of autistic representation (wrongly played as well) and if you need to count how many autistic were given the opportunity to play an autistic character the number is shorter than you think. All of this discussion when I said that I actually like the drama even if the actress is neurotypical so I don't understand why you keep acting like I used my opinion as the only true one (which is not). one detail that non-Korean speakers may miss: woo youngwoo's speech is awkward because she uses more formal tenses than necessary. in Korean, there are different levels of formality you can use when speaking to other people, reflected in how you conjugate verbs. this is determined by how close you are with someone in terms of age/status and relationship. if someone is the same age or younger than you, or if they're a family member or close friend, you're allowed to drop honorifics and use casual tenses. typically, you use more formal tenses for elderly people (or anyone older than you that you aren't close to, especially at work or school) to show respect, and strangers to be polite. when she speaks to her same-age colleagues, friends, or her father, it would be more 'natural' to use casual speech/tenses; however, she does not. this is something I noticed immediately because it's often highlighted as something non-native speakers do when learning Korean: they use more formal tenses than necessary because that's what they learn first, and are less familiar with casual speech. as a writing choice, it makes a lot of sense; since youngwoo is a stickler for grammar and pronunciation, of course she keeps a more formal/polite tense when speaking to others, as a more 'proper' way of speaking. it also immediately differentiates her way of speaking from her colleagues. very interesting detail.

Another character I loved, because it's usually rare to find in most k-dramas I've seen, was her female coworker. Considering, Young woo bested her in being intelligent and in getting the man she herself was interested in, she still remained a loyal friend (still at ep.10), I hope she doesn't change. Woo Young Woo described her as sunshine in spring or something like that, which was very apt. That was a nice scene too, cos she wanted to be called beautiful or cute, but Young woo had something better in mind which was actually more accurate.

About the palindromes; if you study or know the korean language you'll probably know this but the Hangul (korean language) letters all represent sounds, like english letters. Some of those letters look like this; Vowels: 아 (a), 야 (ya), 어 (eo), and 여 (yeo) / Consonants: ㅂ (b/p), ㅈ (j), ㄴ (n), and ㅅ (s). When you put the hangul letters together you'll get larger characters that represent syllables that will make up full words. ie. The word 'no' in korean is 아니요 (aniyo) and when you break it down syllable by syllable you get 아 - 니 - 요 (a-ni-yo). And when you break down each syllable you see that 아(a) is created with the vowel 아(a), 니(ni) is created with the consonant ㄴ(n) and the vowel 이(i), and 요(yo) is created with the vowel 요(yo). With this you can understand that korean palindromes would go by syllables like their words rather than by letters like english words. So in the drama when Woo Young-Woo says words like Tomato as a palindromes it make sense in Korean because when you break down tomato by syllable you get to-ma-to and backwards by syllable it is still to-ma-to. Another example that's a bit harder is the word Swiss. As English speakers we say Swiss as Swiss, but Koreans say it as Seuwiseu (Seu-Wi-Seu) or 스위스 in hangul. And as you can see the Hangul characters are 스 - 위 - 스 whether they are written forwards or backwards by syllable. I hope this wasn't too much to understand and everyone can enjoy Young-Woo's introduction speech to the fullest now. If there are any questions about this I may be able to answer them so definitely ask.

i was hesitant to even watch this drama based on the fact that my brother has autism, and i can't really intake to whether it was accurate to natural autism symptoms, but tons of items i found similar to symptoms my brother has, (stimming, info dumping, hyperfixations, sensory issues) my brother hates loud noises and was afraid of balloons for a lot of his childhood because he was afraid of the popping noises. seeing a lot of these relate to my brother was comforting in the sense that it was finally represented, and **again** i can not take to how accurate it is, but how i see the items/things that my brother often exhibits in many ways! i definitely find this drama as a comfort show for me. honestly it makes me so happy to see more disabilities/disorders being represented in media culture, and especially k-dramas, which is not often represented in media, or i haven't seen represented well if it is at all. i don't know though-- what're your thoughts?

My best friend, as she states it has "flavors of autism" she is highly intelligent and works in IT at a job that pays tremendously well but would drive me bonkers. Her tendency to hyper focus is both a strength and weakness. It is imperative in her job but can make her hard to be around in some social settlings. Luckily, like our character in this show she is open to being told when it is not ok to be obsessive when in a social setting. Both her sons are also autistic to a greater and lessor degree. Both are lucky to be extremely intelligent and are driven to perfection. The older didn't start talking until he was 6, but did so in complete sentences when he did so. He has ticks and makes involuntary movements and sounds. I am absolutely loving this show for many reasons. I think the part that stands out to me is the care that is being taken to show that all autistic people are not a like and that for most social interaction and conflict are very difficult for them. The not making eye contact is such a social norm that it really places a stigma on the autistic person who has that trait. I am a huge Asian drama fan!

Hi there! I live in Canada and was diagnosed with what they then called HFA (so probably would have gotten the label of Aspergers if I had been diagnosed as a teen and level 1 now.) So I have the same level, so to speak, as Woo Young Woo. I find my gait is probably far less awkward then her own, but there are certain things that made me sit back on the sofa. Like...I sometimes have been told I make a bit of a humming noise, sometimes just a little bit, if I am thinking or lost in thought or a little tired. The whale thing floored me because I used to have dozens of whale figures as a child and was obsessed with whales (my favourite is the humpback whale.) I feel like there are things the character does that strike me as more overtly autistic to others than how I display but other things that I do that probably seem more overtly obvious (I often have to wear my sunglasses even at work because I am extremely light sensitive.) The info dumping thing is pretty much spot on. Woo Young Woo is much better at getting sleep than I am. I also likely eat a wider array of food but I do tend to eat the same thing at work every day from the coworker restaurant because I have a lot of GI issues and food sensitivities. I am not even half way through the series so I will likely see more things. I also never liked rotating doors but I can walk through them in a way where I don't stand out. So I am not as anxious with rotating doors. I am very anxious going down escalators though. My hands start sweating and I get very agitated. I can go up short escalators relatively easily but still almost never can go down an escalator. Some skytrains I have to walk all around to look for an elevator to get to the level of the trains.

Whenever I watch Atty. Woo, she reminds me of a former officemate who has similar condition. I love watching her, but at the same time feel sad because of the discrimination she experiences. My officemate was also quite stigmatized because he was often misunderstood. It's good that you are speaking up about autism because people need to be more aware.

Park Eun-bin is an outstandting actor, definitely agree. I wish some of her older shows can be brought back. Like Secret Door for example as this is the story about the tragedy of Prince Sado. She played Lady Hyegyeong, wife of the prince and mother of the last great progressive king, Jeongdo. However, this is imo, her talents are wasted in King's Affections. She did a great job in the role but the story and the rest of the characters are poorly written. On reflection, I shouldn't be surprised as it's based off a romance cartoon series. I didn't last the 16 eps as I found my patience tried. I gave up after ep 12. I was expecting a more down to earth story, not a frivolous tale. I'm always a bit wary when I watch something that has an autistic character because, a lot of the time, they overdo it. Like, not every autistic person is gonna be a genius, not everyone is gonna stim the same way or to the same degree, etc--so I especially loved that she's not the only autistic person we get to see. I am recently diagnosed with adhd and have a lot of traits those with diagnosed autism have. I work in a cafe where I’m being moved to working in the back due to my sensory processing issues and I am working on my attention issues on my own. Recently I discovered I could become a research psychologist where I can discuss, explore, and write about psychology as a career, and I think that’s what I want to do because ever since I was 13, I’ve spent much time learning about psychology and often find myself writing about in papers at school when it’s not necessary but can’t seem to help myself, especially when I wrote about Nikola Tesla, who had an extreme interesting abnormal psychology. It’s amazing that her special interest in whales is helping her so much with the cases, and I hope every autistic person out there finds a career that involves their special interest!!

I've been so curious about what autistic people think of this drama but the few I've seen from creators mostly focus on the negative stuff and that the actress isn't autistic. This is what I wanted, a review of what seems accurate, relatable, or interesting/funny observations of the character itself. I hope you a do a review per episode. They touch on so much stuff after the first episode. I'm still on my self diagnosis journey so I've done some reasearch and I am in love with the show. The characters are so well written and Woo Young feels alive. Jun Ho is the greenest of flags and I want to have a partner like him. I love how in the drama, they give focus on an aspect of her ASD but she still continues that behavior in the background and it's not given special attention again. An example is , the first time we see her doing the counting before entering a door , they show other people's reaction to it and it's the main focus of the scene but when she does it in other eps it's treated as an aferthought and not like LOOK SHES DOING THE WEIRD DOOR THING AGAIN and showing the other characters being flabbergasted. It feels more like oh she's doing the thing again and just moves on to the focus of the scene.

You did a great job of describing this particular drama. I have watched K dramas before but, was having trouble finding another one I could really get into and connect with. There is also I think something called Beautiful Mind or similar to that title that is interesting in how they deal with certain heavy topics. Thank You for this suggestion. Have a nice rest of your July and a good start into your August. Take Care..

Now I want to watch it! I’m not autistic myself but hearing your thoughts was super interesting and insightful. Now when I watch I’ll know that this is what it might be like for some people with autism. I look forward to being enlightened further! Also may I just say that throughout the video I couldn’t help but notice your hair and makeup, so pretty! 💖 Thank you for making this video and for explaining a bit about autism for people like me who don’t have any experience with it. Your content is helpful to many people, autistic or not, keep going! 💕💕

Thank you for sharing Stephanie. I watch K dramas and others daily. Love them. This drama caught my eye and I could not stop watching. Very different from the usual. I could not help but wonder if it was true to an autistic person. I have learned a lot about how challenging it is for an autistic person to meld into our society. It was heartwarming to see most people around her, though skeptical at first, accepted her and recognized her abilities. The open bullying was hard to watch. I am impatiently waiting for episode 11 and as with many other dramas, sad it is only 16 episodes. Again thank you for sharing your thoughts.

A very interesting review of the series focus and character. You affirmed the actor's authentic portrayal of autism for me which I felt moved by. I'm not autistic but have taught creative writing to primary age autistic students in Singapore for about 4 years. Rhythm and repetition which are hallmarks of poetry work in the favour of many of my students. Like students in general there are those who are highly intelligent and can express themselves very well, while others are more challenged but do get there in time. The show resonated with me as did your well-expressed and heartfelt review of it. PS. I'm also a secret K-drama enthusiast. Best. C

I love this series. I feel it is so sensitively done, possibly my favorite portrayal so far. I have found some episodes hard to watch (I have had to stop episode 9 for the moment until I am better able to manage watching it.) The trigger warnings are definitely worth being aware of.

I really love the show! Park Eunbin was the best actress for it! She really studied and wanted Woo Young Woo to be like any person, a unique autistic individual, so she doesn’t offend autistic people and put them under an umbrella. Which I love!! I’ll definitely watch her other dramas! I personally like Woo Young Woos voice as the drama goes along. She speaks VERY formally in korean, I kinda hope she speaks less formal with Lee Junho ❤️ The story is well written, from the cases to her own new found feelings! I can’t wait for ep 11!! I should look into the director too because wow!! Its not even completed yet 😭😭

This is probably the first commentary that I have come across on You Tube that was a serious, well thought out and intelligent piece. I can't thank you enough. I even listened to you entire talk and was so impressed that I will probably listen to it again! As I have written elsewhere, I almost didn't watch this series because the clip that Netflix created for the coming attraction seemed unbelievably silly and offensive. I can't remember what made me change my mind, but I think that it was because it had won a high audience rating. The next thing I knew I was binge watching and having to ration myself so that wouldn't watch the whole thing without stopping! I also watch a great many K dramas and have found them to be fascinating, but as you said there are sometimes avoidable continuity errors that don't make sense, but these series as a whole have been fascinating and charming. When you have seen the rest of this one, I hope that you make another video as part II, and perhaps we can chat again.

Now that you mention, I do remember I wasn't very used to her voice at the beginning, but it wasn't painful for me. I found the child actress for young woo's voice really painful for me. Thankfully it did not last for very long. I also noticed I tend to stim along with her when I'm watching the show. I also do a lot of the stuff she does at work...eg. cutting straight to the point when I call someone, walking off asap once I've received my job instructions, being too brutally honest etc. It was very interesting watching the show as I am able to see what I look like to others and what reactions you get for exhibiting certain behaviours.

I love this k-drama and appreciate your take on it. I especially like the way they are subconsciously educating the audience that not all autistic people are the same, that they are worthy to be valued as people and should be treated with respect and love as they deserve.

Just coming back here after finishing the season! Looooooved it! ❤️ This shouldn't be a spoiler.. but the most relatable scene for me was when she was eating out and forced herself to eat something she didn't like to be polite. The faces she pulled were spot on what I look like when I have to force it too. It almost made me cry because I could feel that so strongly right along with her 😭
