My name is Stephannie and my goal with this channel is to provide research-based and balanced information regarding autism-related topics in an understandable format. I aim to translate research into something more easily comprehendible for the viewer while also providing my own take, insight, thoughts, and examples. I also do deep-dive projects where I research and conduct interviews to facilitate insight and conversation. While my main goal of the channel is to educate, I also share my perspective as a late-diagnosed autistic adult and sometimes will simply provide my opinion about certain matters related to the autism community.
While I find learning and sharing about autism important, I also have other interests and aspects of my identity, of which I explore more on my other channels, Life with Steph Beth (whatever I feel like) and Stephanie Speaks (Christian topics).
I aim to upload every Thursday at 4pm CST except the last Thursday of the month, where I go live.

My son was nonverbal for the first 7 years of his life. He has a 5-year-old level of maturity and mindset and is now 22 years old. He has no way of supporting himself in the future. Severe/profound autism is not at a high functioning level. I have listened to so many debates on the subject. I have seen many attempts to suppress the information that needs to be heard. Though I appreciate other points of view, I live this every day and I know the difference between levels of autism and functionality quite well. The conversation needs to continue. AND other conversations that are completely dismissed are of greater value than many consider them to be. I too have a diagnosis of autism. But I was afforded the opportunity to survive societies ignorance and support myself. I hope one day the diagnosis and or condition of autism is gone. Though I want it, a cure is most likely out of the question. Yes, I still want it cured and dismissed.

Since when is science perfect? Science never ends. It always learns. It makes mistakes. That’s how science exits - by making mistakes and learning from it. There were so many mistakes made. And people forget about it. What about the scientist that said it’s important to wash our hands and then he was in a mental institution bc they thought he is crazy. Isn’t that crazy??? Science is not the warm blanket to use as a cover as we would like! I’m sure there is great science in the world. But it’s not perfect!!! We are learning. Oh and don’t forget the money game 😉

You are NOT crazy! I have been depressed, on and off, since I was a very small child. Depression and suicidal thoughts are a big part of feeling guilty. Housework etc are my worst tasks but, if I can't face them, i make a plan to either buy an applicable appliance or ask someone to help me. If these are not feasible, i leave the tasks or temporarily cover them up.😂 As a matter of fact - FACT - your thought processes are simply different, and superior to many other people's. Your 'auttstic' brain synapses give you an UNIQUE mix of amazing abilities that very few people possess. I am 73. I was officially diagnosed as virtually 100% autistic, 7 days ago. At first, I felt terribly vulnerable and shaky, although I've been a committed Christian for 42 years. Reflecting on all this, so many issues suddenly made perfect sense. God never makes mistakes, therefore my brain is not a mistake. I have a mix of unusual talents that allow me to think outside the box and to see and solve problems almost instantly. Yes, I have had to learn to interact with people whose brains work differently, and to keep quiet instead of blurting out solutions etc., but I wouldn't want to be anyone else. I enjoy my brain. It gives me a feeling of happiness and awe. God does not make mistakes. My positive traits outweigh the so-called negatives. I have chosen to celebrate the way God made me and to thank Him from the bottom of my heart. Much love from me to you, sweet girl. ❤🤗🤗🤗

I just wanted to see what comorbidity I had since I would step over imaginary lines, have scary clear visions in my minds eye, and would have extreme spikes of energy, less extreme than it used to be, I don’t dart off and run into walls like a cat as much anymore and sometimes act like a wild animal when I am restless which is pretty hard to suppress. It sounds like I am faking it, but people will disbelieve and they can if they want. When I was a kid, I used to have very bad asthma and really sensitive to sound. So most have different things that come with it so probably shouldn’t be too worried about it. I don’t relate to most of these comorbidities.

Who is diagnosed around 14 years old with autism after years and years of suffering 😭 are you formally diagnosed me at 14 years old and it's since ruined my life just say the fakers if you want to be in on this prepare for to be more persecuted than any other group. There are only two absolutely zero Fair representation and a ton of unfair and misleading stereotypes in the media and also offensive stereotypes in the media autistics and native Americans even for black people and women and trans people it's getting a lot better really quickly but autistic people especially in the state of Maine the second you get a diagnosis and receive services for it autism status at at some point you have to have some kind of struggle that you received services for. There are successful autistic people these people are either born wealthy so they got a way around needing services or like Jeff bezos he worked really really hard to overcome his autism and basically essentially cure it through a combination of masking which I'm a big fan of because anyone who says I'm there are successful autistic people these people are either born wealthy so they got a way around needing services or like Jeff bezos he worked really really hard to overcome his autism and basically essentially cure it through a combination of masking which I'm a big fan of because anyone who says masking is the worst thing in the world masking will make your dick fall off while the reality is what are the consequences of not masking so there's signs in recent studies that show that maskers who mask for more than 10 years lose their autism diagnosis as all the wiring that makes autism autism and differentiates it from just an intelligent high-functioning individual change the more you masks. Essentially become a neurotypical. 40 years just the fact that you've been able to comfortably masks for 40 years would both cure your autism like an actual cure for autism is asking for more than 10 years so you would already have been four times the amount of masking in years and intensity to completely cure what makes your autism autism. Basically the way to cure autism is to turn it into a strength and basically turn you into just a really smart neurotypical wouldn't it be great if autistic people were accepted for who they were rather than whether they have to be a savant genius. Do you know from experience if you're not a savant genius and you're not perfect 100% of the time you'll be treated less than an animal. That's right autistic people my fellow autistics if you do not become absolutely perfect and better than perfect at all things that you can do if you're not absolutely 100% perfect with zero flaws and basically everything becomes so great that becomes superhuman you will basically have less rights the cows and lambs and other animals we slaughter for food. You don't want to be tortured like a baby veal cow then you have to start becoming superhuman cuz animals have more rights in this country than we do do autism fakers incredibly stupid because you're appropriating a disease that's going to make you hated. I say this to all autism fakers and to all autistic people again if you're autistic you have to rebuild yourself 100% perfect and everything just to be considered like 85% what a neurotypical just takes for granted in their rights. Do you have to be basically perfect in a thousand times better than every human being that ever existed or like that level of function and basically everything becomes flawless from here on out or else you die or get locked away in some kind of group setting what does a mental health facility or a group home for the rest of your life

While burnout is not what anyone wants to be dealing with, I hate the term because when I say Autistic burnout, everyone just thinks burnout. It's not distinct. "Why are you complaining so much? Anyone can go through this!" But to my mind, it's more nuanced. Sensory input can contribute to our burnout, sensory input that on a normal basis, neurotypicals don't even notice. I'm with you, I kinda prefer the more accurate description of regression. I have lost so many abilities over the last couple years while trying desperately to claw my way back to "sanity". Everything is overwhelming. Everything is utterly exhausting. Everything is too loud, bright, suffocating. Burnout is a term neurotypicals throw around, therefore it's lost it's power to convey the level of distress we are experiencing. Regression. That feels more accurate.

It is so weird when I get into those phases. Like one time I went kayaking and afterwards yes I was tired but there was something else. I felt like I just couldn’t do anything afterwards. Like drive, have a conversation, eat. I just wanted to just lie there in my spin of a life and not hear, see, feel. I was confused. Functioning was so hard.

I do movements with my hands but whenever I got asked like hand flapping, I say no, but I honestly do. I never did it in my childhood. I did read that anyone of any age on the Autism Spectrum Disorder can stim. It doesn't have to be during childhood. I still walk on my toes. At work, I'll rock back and forth, open and close my hands, flick my fingers, tap my thumb on each finger, rubbing my fingers together, moving my fingers. Hum. I do hum. Twirl my hair. Lip biting. Skin picking. Lip picking. I will pick up the nail clippers and click them. Listening to the same songs on a loop. I don't know if I stim a lot, but I do them. Plus I wish I wasn't, I guess, insecure about them since I probably do it privately. I don't know. It's how I am and if I get asked, maybe I'll be open with it rather than hiding them.

This is fascinating, as an adult with autism, who thankfully hasn't been subjected to such things, this is incredible to watch. I think the ideas of ABA "therapy" are strangely, quite well developed, although it's a matter of climbing all the way up the ladder on the wrong wall. It seems to me that ABA probably does actually achieve its goal of modifying "ineffective" behavior and producing a more "desirable" behavior. The problem, which is a big big big problem, is that this entire goal is pointless and counter productive for someone with autism. You get overstimulated with making eye contact? let me punish you and withhold rewards until you do it. You get overwhelmed when communicating? let me punish you until you communicate in the way I want you to. You get overwhelmed and need to stim? let me punish you for stimming, as well as physically restrain you, which is extremely overwhelming for many autistic people. you communicate in a way that's not exactly how I want you to? let me punish you. Of course it changes their behavior! If I was tortured when I didn't conform to what the torturer expects I would modify my behavior too, but dang, what a crappy way to achieve "effectiveness." Why does it matter if my lack of eye contact bothers you? Why don't you learn to deal with it. Why does it matter if I communicate in a slightly different way than you expect? Learn to listen. Why does it matter if I express my discomfort in ways you find childish or strange? Learn some empathy. It shouldn't be anyone, much less an autistic person, much less an autistic child's responsibility to make sure you're comfortable with how they communicate. Just because you think a disabled person behaves weirdly, does not give you the right to abuse them until they conform to what you want them to do. As an autistic person who thankfully is able to communicate verbally, I feel so sorry for these people who are abused with no ability to even verbally speak for themselves. The little girls and boys about 10 minutes into the video are communicating, to me anyway, very effectively that they are extremely uncomfortable with what's happening, and the "therapist" is entirely disregarding all of their nonverbal communication, which is screaming "help, I don't want to be here, stop touching me" The little girl in the blue dress understands what she is supposed to do, and she might not even be opposed to being touched, but the manner in which he is touching her and speaking to her is strange and scary, and she can pick up on that. She probably hates him more than she hates being touched, as she should. What evil evil people would abuse disabled children like this I can't even imagine. I can't even watch the rest of the video, only made it about 30 minutes in. Thank you for covering this, although it's very triggering for me, and probably many others, I think this needs to be exposed to the world for what it is, so that maybe we can get this banned, with similar things like gay/trans conversion therapy as well. Society does very similar, although much less extreme things to force autistic people to conform, this is why autistic people mask, in order to fit in and not have their behavior controlled by others, we do it ourselves, which is extremely traumatic in its own way. Neurotypical people need to learn empathy and how to listen, all of the autistic children are great communicators, just not to people who don't know how to listen. We should focus on teaching parents and others to listen to autistic people.

Lack in empathy and theory of minds is only ever present in autistic mbti types with a strong analytical thinking preference (introverted thinking, Ti). An autistic infj would show strengths in visual spatial skills and spatial memory. Weakness in executive functioning (Te) in the form of inattentive adhd. Low sensitivity in interoception (Si) and proprioception (Se) or no connection to the body. Can't easily learn to skate board. Will likely have complete aphantasia (no inner eye), no inner voice/monologue. Likely to be able to think spatially and in concept maps. Should be able to perform mental math calculations as spatial memory seems to effect math working memory and math senses for magnitude, direction, fractions, geometry, decoding schematic diagrams or visual diagrams in general. Likely to have poor episodic memory or ability to relive memories. Will instead have a 3rd person semantic memory recall for personal memories.

I'm AuDHD, chronically ill, and have just established care with a functional med PCP last week (after 6 months of being passed around by specialists that can't figure out WTH is wrong with me). Many symptoms neurological, dysautonomic, and more. I had such a mixed review about my 1.5 hour consult with my new doctor, as she pushed MM detox drinks and dietary restrictions. I'm nervous to go "all in", but I also am surprised that my care team hasn't pushed dietary stuff yet until now. I'm very pro-vax, pro-science, and have been used to Western medicine, so all of this goes against the grain of what I'm used to. I also am in the camp that autism is genetic and there is hereditary links to it. It does bother me to know that AW would state otherwise, but I also don't know much about him yet. I'm so jaded and have enough medical PTSD, though, and have had so many doctors give up on me that I'm willing to try non-invasive symptom management. It does both me A LOT that anybody of influence would allude to autism being anything other than a genetic pre-disposition and hereditary. That being said...sigh...I am going to try to exhaust my options to see if I can get any relief from chronic pain. My doc said that if I try this, get uncomfortable, etc, that she is more than happy to send over referrals to specialists and she also does incorporate Western med practices, too. I'm so nervous about this all, tbh.

I found your video because someone I have watched made a critical video about it. I just wanted to thank you for your defense. I don't think of myself as an Autism Mom but I am a mother to an autistic child. He is very young plus, I have 4 neurotypical children so perhaps that's why I don't identify that way but I do appreciate hearing people's stories and following families of autistic children on youtube. It can be very isolating to have a severely ill child and I often feel guilt, shame, helpless, hopeless, angry, sad, worried, etc. even when I know I shouldn't and seeing other people I can relate to makes me feel less alone. I see people saying that mothers should get their own identity and not connect themselves with their children so much but I don't see how that's possible nor would it be a positive. Taking care of any child takes all your heart and mind. Everything you do revolves around your child, your own wants and needs are an afterthought as your child's needs are your needs. You provide for your child's every need, you make the appointments, you fight for healthcare, for services. Your home, your schedule, your sleep, your social life, your income, all revolve around your child and if your child has high needs, you have less of a chance to focus of anything else. I don't think parents should be judged for identifying with being a parent. If you saw just how many parents of autistic children who are ready to give up, ready to leave their child at a foster home, leave him at the hospital, or worse, you wouldn't think so poorly of mothers who are proud to me their child's parent.

People now generally don't care about anybody but themselves. Neurotypicals are able to advocate for themselves. Autistic people are an easy target, generally no pushback. Stress is a killer and causes a lot of health issues. Autists spend their whole lives under an awful lot of stress, and bullying.

Your video is incredibly educational and informative as no other videos I’ve watched. Thank you so much for taking the time to research all this information and clearly explaining what it all means. You’ve really given me information I needed and have been seeking in understanding abilities I have, why my brain is wired differently, why it functions higher levels, etc… I’ve had C-PTSD from early childhood and have dealt with it my whole life. When I finally went to a PTSD therapist for years and finally regained control over the PTSD. I then understood many of my abilities were connected to being an Empath or HSP. By random happenstance I recently stumbled into an autism video, I knew I did not have autism but have always educated my self on it. After the video I shared many characteristics but no that’s ridiculous. But I took a test online for neurodivergence, autism was one of the tests and I scored high on the spectrum. Now I’m really confused - am I an Empath because of the C-PTSD OR am I autistic with C-PTSD, and which one is responsible for my ability to watch my husband, at the time, actually having sex with another female when he was in West Virginia and I was in Florida? And other non-earthly abilities? What the heck am I, where do these abilities come from and what are they connected to?????????? 😒🤔

Autism Speaks is trying to deceive the public, if you’ve been watching what goes on behind the scenes and understand their capitalistic strategies, you’ll see it’s not going to change anytime soon. There’s contradicting statements about eugenics and they have helped the Canadians legalise Euthanasia. They attend the Autism Investor Summit every year and only help insure ABA, at the Autism Investor Summit no autistic people are allowed there including autistic people on the leadership board. If they cared they would have already helped insure other interventions besides ABA, they are even in dealership with the private equities now. A nonautistic person who attended the Autism Investor Summit wrote an article about what was discussed, nothing to do with autistic people, just talking about lobbying, making investments, the tax lawyers. Just like the other industries, they only put any autistic people in power because as the neurodiversity has moved forward people have stopped supporting industries who don’t include autistic people. They changed the colour of the jigsaw puzzle in 2020 because they were rebranding, they won’t get the money if they don’t show the public what they want to see. Professor Alicia A. Broderick, a critical autism studies scholar, exposed their financial tricks. Alicia Broderick: More recently, in 2019, President Trump signed into law the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education and Support Act (a.k.a. the Autism CARES Act, a reauthorization of the Autism CARES Act of 2014, itself a reauthorization and renaming of the Combating Autism Act of 2006), which allocates $1.8 billion across fiscal years 2020-2024. The reauthorized law now requires the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund research into developmental, behavioural, and clinical psychology, in addition to its extant mandates to fund research into the neurobiology, genetics, and genomics of autism, thus feeding the subsidizing both intervent and PREVENTION industries with federal funding. (It should additionally be noted that the 2019 CARES Act reauthorization also provides for NIH funding of psychopharmacological research relative to autism, so my next analysis may well be of the scaling up of the autism pharmaceutical industry) (Autism CARES Act, 2019). All at the autism investor summit every April, that’s where their money’s going.
