Auto Modellista - The Gran Turismo Rival That Missed its Chance

Auto Modellista is a title that will elicit very different memories from racing game fans. Sure, its tremendous roster of cars - including JDM classics like the Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline - was a highlight, but the game proved to be a disappointment.
It was developed by Capcom, a company famed for producing monster hits like Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Mega Man, and had an art style that to this day remains pleasing to the eye.
Officially-licenced performance parts and body kits were a tuner's dream, and tapped into the burgeoning car modifying scene of the early noughties, as was the attention Japanese sports cars received from the rest of the world post-Gran Turismo.
In our video retrospective, we cast our eye over Auto Modellista and explain how that despite having all the ingredients to be a success, it was nowhere near the Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec competitor Capcom expected.

one of my favourite guilty pleasures on the ps2, especially when upscaled on pcsx2, yes it does have its flaws (major ones at that) but it’s a game I find myself coming back to time and time again simply due to its rich sense of style, there’s no other racing game like it (GT Pro Series is close but still not the same). Hopefully in the future we may see someone take up the mantle of a auto modellista successor

This game was so addictive for me. 1st game I played with backfiring exhausts after gear changes and pops off throttle, the sound was awesome. Couldn't get enough. Probably doesn't hold up today though.

As you brought up, cel-shaded graphics from the era have held up so hell. XIII, Windwaker, Jet Grind Radio, Okami, just to name a few, all look awesome.

Recently found my ps2 and my old memory card in my closet after all these years im (26) i ordered everything for it and it still works! Ive been on a collecting spree and i just discovered this game i never played it as a kid and i want it so bad now but people want $80 dollars for it... idk about all that but i spent $80 on budokai tenkaichi 3 so i JUST might for this game since its so unique

Yeah, I can admit that despite Auto Modellista has one of the best art directions in video game ever, the difficulty and handling don't bode well. I know you could start off in a slower car for the sake of competitiveness, but given the base roster you get when starting Garage Life you'd pick a Skyline anyway and just cheese your whole way through. The easy handling US Tuned has didn't help, but I remember watching my friend's stream on the original Japanese version and it got a harder handling or so. Had this game was given a second chance, they could have time to fix those. Can't help thinking about the fact that the game has Jiotto Caspita and Tamiya Kakegawa Circuit though.

The AI can give you some challenge if you barely modify your car or if it is unmodifiable (like the Honda NSX). You'd have opponents that at least on the first lap or two have much faster cars and handle their cars somewhat decently. However, the most challenge you can get is on the hill tracks. The AI issue with this game stems from it trying to pair your car with the ones that match its performance. Trying to beat the garage mode with the Subaru Young SS can be either the hardest or easiest thing ever. If you don't modify that little bean you will luckily get second place if you're really good as the other cars you're pinned against are too fast for it (kinda like GTs situation with the Midget) However, once you modify the Young SS at max that thing will zoom past your opponents. Granted, you will be constantly hearing the redline beeping though

i had this game, picked it up cheap i think, i reckon for its time it was pretty good, one of the only cel shaded car games on ps2 which might have attracted me to it.

Bought it new and very cool game until I drove it. Massiv letdown in the handling department and was quickly traded for credits at a video game store.

You have to play the pal as japanese releases. The handling was heavily altered for the US version.

Never played this game but I'll definitely say this is on my bucket list. But I did played this free to play arcade racing game that have very similar art style called Drift City that sadly shutdown it's servers in 2016 in USA however I did a quick search and somehow to this day, the official Korean servers are up and there is a fan server running Drift City surprisingly.

I really hope they re-release this game, I would love to play it, even if I am a Xbox player. Having a bigger car list, with new and old car brands, would be amazing, especially with this artstyle, since other new games focus more on realism.

Man the possibilities this game had! The major factor that messed it up for me was definitely the handling 😔 other than that I loved the art style, loved the garage customization, loved everything else yes they should've gave an option to turn off the announcer... once in a while it was ok it gave you that feeling of playing a really cool Capcom Arcade cabinet game but after a while 😬

Very much a style-over-substance game, but I still love it anyway. Just beat the game for the second time recently. I loved the garage customization in this game, unlocking furniture for it was honestly my main motivation for finishing the game. There was also the secret Tamiya RC track you unlocked for beating the game, giving your car a little antennae and body posts to look the part. Sadly the game still plays like as if you were driving a full-scale car, doesn't feel like controlling an RC car at all. I wish Capcom gave this IP a second chance with a sequel, the same can be said for Enthusia by Konami.

Seems most reviewers miss the entire point of the game. Racing has little to do with it, and is almost an afterthought. The main purpose is to tune cars, make cool videos of them, take photos, and most importantly, decorate your dream garage using official licensed items and goodies. It has more in common with "The Sims" than a racing game. It had far more "visual" customization than any other car game of it's time. In most games you were lucky if you could change the color of car much less add a body kit, and adding custom made decals you did yourself was unheard of!

@@jakeroon That's a good point. I used to play Street Rod entirely for the car customization and I hated how much it was about the racing, but I think that was mostly because the physics were terrible and only the drag racing didn't suck so I struggled to make money from the racing in that game.
