Problem I find with these combers that sit on the basket is when you remove them the fluffed grinds usually overflow the basket and it’s messy to get them tamped. You can even clearly see this in the video here.

Use the wavy smoothing tool before the tamp.

Does this work with a naked portafilter (i.e., no spouts)? It's not clear that you can place the autocomb + (naked) portafiler on the counter? You'd have to hold it aloft? I do not have effective use of one arm, so...
@barista_hustle
@barista_hustle 10 месяцев назад
Yeah this is definitely intended as a two handed process. If using one handed, a spouted portafilter is necessary.

Does it work with 49mm baskets?
@gertjaarsy
@gertjaarsy 11 месяцев назад
Yes, you’re able to adjust the diameter of this tool from 48 mm to 58.5 mm.
@barista_hustle
@barista_hustle 11 месяцев назад
No unfortunately this is 58mm only!

@@deathkid411If you have access to a 3d printer you can check out the umikot on printables. It's also 58mm only but I'm currently working out the last few problems with the 49mm version for my pre mil Pavoni.

Interesting tool. It seems like it's set up for right-handed baristas. Can it be converted for lefties also?
@barista_hustle
@barista_hustle 6 месяцев назад
It's 100% ambidextrous. The portafilter thumb knob ends up over the middle of the handle for both lefties and righties :)
@minimax262
@minimax262 6 месяцев назад
@@barista_hustle Thanks for your reply. Now wouldn't a lefty have to pull with the thumb, instead of pushing the knob?
@barista_hustle
@barista_hustle 6 месяцев назад
@@minimax262 yes but it's not that different. What power users have found is that they use the hand holding the autocomb to do all of the downwards and twisting movements, then just use the thumb to gently hold in place. ie the thumb never moves side to side. (Does that make sense?)
@minimax262
@minimax262 6 месяцев назад
@@barista_hustle I think I follow. However, I still believe that it would feel more natural to hold the knob in place by pushing it sideways as shown here 0:39, rather than pushing it down. Now that’s all me speculating. I hope to get a chance to try it out for myself at some point in time. It’s definitely a very interesting device.

Seems like overkill but it also works really well.

I can’t see a market for this product

Meanwhile I think every specialty cafe should have and be using one

Well in places where speed and consistency are needed this is a no brainer. From a business standpoint makes your product consitent and fast without sacrificing quality. But for home i agree the market would be smaller.

@@m.andre824 Haha no way cafes will use this bulky shit. These WDT tools are mainly for domestic uses. I have never seen specialty cafes doing wdt or using any other distribution tools due to high volumes. It takes way too much time and you can't spend time like that on a single order. Every extra minutes matter in the cafe especially during the rush. That's why fewer and fewer specialty cafes now even offer pour-overs on their menu. Even then, I would not use this even for home set up as it looks super ugly, way bulky and needs too much hassle. I would rather use regular WDT, Moonraker or other cheaper 3d printed ones.
