So another platform has arrived to the industry, the long anticipated Autodesk Tandem. Does it deliver, or are we looking at another model viewer that the clients wont adopt? Find out in this video!

Extremely informative overview Gavin, thanks for taking the time to do this. Saved me half a day at least! Completely agree RE the sentiment about Tandem being too Revit-Centric in its approach. Also - lack of uniclass Schema? Madness. That being said, the continuing utility of the forge viewer is apparent. Outside of that - 510k!!! I'll bloody compile and manage "digital twins" (barf) on behalf of any client manually myself for half that price :D Excellent as always.

Glad to help streamline your own testing, worth a play I'd say in either case. It does have a bit of promise but a ways to go to get in the clients' hands I think. I've been informed Uniclass is on its way, although one has to question why not just wait to launch with it also.

I d'loaded it yesterday and was going to kick the tires so thank you for reviewing tandem. I agree about it being too close to both revit and 360 model coordination UI for many FMs to use. I agree with Christian Gerdes re data analytics and Conor re pushing the data to dynamics or power bi for the dashboards. Also, really good pt about having a dev team to make our own. I'd just go that route. It'd be interesting to see other digital twin platforms to compare and contrast. Thanks GC

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for other alternatives to try out, there are very few free or accessible ones out there that I've seen so far (so I commend Autodesk there at least). I'm aware of Bentley Itwin but haven't typically worked in the Microstation/Aecosim platforms. Willowtwin is a good one but is inhouse and not a great deal is shared for it.

Interesting review. 1st time I heard about this. Without the ability to integrate other data formats or data from sensors etc. this will always be just another FM tool. The selling point for a digital twin platform should be data analytics and facility optimisation with the help of ai. Looks like there’s still a long way to go.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Thanks Christian! They announced it fairly quietly at the last Autodesk University (which was arguably a bit of a flop as well), so it did have quite a quiet launch. Yep, the missing data formats is a jarring issue and stops it being a usable tool in many markets I'd say (510k price tag aside). It seems Autodesk rarely develops the end user solution these days, but moreso the platform to develop it within - given all their construction smarts it would be nice to see them do the former more often.

Cheap version of Synchro Control. In reality they should add it as part of BIM360 services already. Doesn't work with European server, as you said Classification is limitated to only two and if you try to add more doesn't really work. Well, long road for Autodesk catch up with Bentley in this space! Great work Gavin!

Definitely looks like spin at a glance, it feels like just another attempt by Autodesk to control the market and keep a new group of users locked in to their close data formats
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
I'm not sure if that's their endgame here, but time will tell i guess. Hopefully we will see some non autodesk formats supported in future.

My general impression of the 'Program' is that Autodesk were starting to notice a lot of third parties out there offering Digital Twin Platforms, a lot of large government entities and multinationals building their own programs and probably wanted to get something out quickly before they are beaten to the punch by someone else. They most definitely will be improving this as time goes on and I wouldn't be surprised based on the feedback that I've seen if that isn't expedited. Me personally, I think ArcGIS, offers much more as a Digital Twin platform and Autodesk already appear to be in partnership with ESRI.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Yes it does feel quite rushed to market, although they have been exploring the realm of twins for a long time in Project Hyperion/Dasher there is heaps not shown in the current build that I've seen then experiment with elsewhere. I'm not quite sure of their motivations, but maybe pressure for competition after some failed takeover bids on competitors may have been involved - hard to say!

Hi! Does Tandem have the digital context and element of time? How does it compare to bentley's digital twin?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 2 года назад
Not that I have seen but it probably has the ability to filter by element data or date after parameters. Versus Bentley it seems more presentable but was not as developed as I expected at the time I reviewed it. Generally I find Bentley solutions quite user unfriendly.

It looks like a reskinned version of the Autodesk viewer, but with more features. Does it have the same horrible orbit tool that works differently from Revit? It's strange that it doesn't have rooms. That seems like a big oversight, rooms and area's are also important for building usage permits / fire safety, energy analysis, etc. How can it not have that? My first internship was at small facility managament buisness that did usage permits and cost estiamtes for annual maintaince. A common task I had to do was to visit a building (these where often municipal school buildings) and measure each room to quantize paint surfaces and the like. We entered that data into a database like application. Also had to make floor plans for occupancy permits. This was all done with AutoCAD. A lot of things where also measured from drawings and each maintance report also had photo's of each room / element that scheduled in the report.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Yes it has inherited pretty much all the pros and cons of the forge navigation. I took a bit of getting used to, I know what you mean. The product team has informed me that rooms can be added as a filter option under the filtering tab (top right button), but I think it needs to be more easily accessible and integrated into the other areas for sure. If anything, rooms are more important than any other element in a twin platform.

Great review! Can anyone explain me how classification systems works? I still dont get it. Thanks
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
The classification system as far as I can tell is able to line itself up to pre-modelled and classified elements. Typically in Revit we would use the 'Assembly code' field for this. I use Uniclass 2015 which wasn't available as it comes so couldn't really test it unfortunately. I have a video on classification here if it helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5_7n0v7RfU0.html

Hey there, nice review. Can you make a similar review on Autodesk assemble. I feel like it's a very interesting software, where there is a combination of both Revit and user defined assemble properties. What's your take on this ??
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
To be honest I haven't used it before, but I am aware of it. When I looked into it in the past it looked more like a classification overlay tool to help break down the model into scoped areas, and I'm a bit surprised they didn't keep developing Assemble into Tandem as a separate module as well. They do seem to try to do very similar things! I'll add it to my list.

Has anybody tried to upload a revit model with rooms and spaces that are activated in the default view that is uploaded to tandem?

My rooms were on but not visible by default. If you visit the filtering tab in tandem it will give you an option for rooms but it is hidden in the top right button of that panel.

@@AussieBIMGuru there are specific parameters for spaces, so meaby spaces on on default view works since they are 3d instead of 2d rooms.

Yes in viewer vs authoring environments its a lighter task to run. More relationships to maintain in revit versus forgeviewer.

I think that this is only one version of platform and that Autodesk after receiving 500k and some change will send team of programers to Client address to design unique solution for him based on his wishes and demands
