just got my first sailboat and it came with this. great video I'll do some testing with everything out to see if it still works. What is the best place to position the unit?
I notice that at 1:35 seconds, you show the connections to the control unit. The larger blue and brown wires go to a 'twelve volt' mains supply PSU to drive the square black controller unit and the thin red and black, via red crimped terminals, go (possibly) to the helm drive motor. The latter two wires (red and black) seem to me to be a little thin to carry any sort of current to drive the helm motor, or have I got that wrong?
I have one of these units, fitted on a 10 meter sailing boat. I have converted the boats steering system to hydraulic. I was wondering if this control unit would work with a hydraulic pump rather than the wheel drive unit. At the moment I don't see why it wouldn't, I was wondering if you ever heard of or saw one of these units used like that.
On my boat there was a hydraulic unit in the past. The previous owner removed it because he couldn't get it to stop leaking. I am now looking to install a normal wheel drive on my hydraulic system. Make sure you have end switches on the rudder to stop the pump / wheeldrive before the rudder hits the mechanical end. A stupid amount of force can be created, bending everything out of shape.
