i thought the turbo was activated by vacuum ( from the vacuum pump via a modulating valve ) rather than by pressure ( would need a source to generate air pressure) ?

Maurice Browne mostly of them are controlled by vacuum, there are some old systems( the pressure is created by the turbine, the boost pressure controls also the wastegate)
