In this video I explain how to choose the correct turbo size for your car! All the formulas and calculations are in the video. Let me know if you like this super technical stuff. Enjoy...
your channel is so underrated, you dont only explain turbochargers in detail but display graphics to better understand them in detail i havent seen anywhere else on youtube, i really wish you the best man and thank you
By far one of the most informative turbo videos I've seen. I'm looking to upgrade my 2004 Honda Civic with a custom turbo setup, and I learned more in these 13 minutes than all of the hours and hours I've spent scouring the internet for information.
I’m preparing for automotive trade school things and at the same time learning how to choose a turbo for a future project I’m planning out for a 91 crx or ef sedan
I just want to share my personal lesson learned from sizing a turbo using this exact method - which resulted in lazy/laggy setup for street driving. I learned that you don’t need peak compressor efficiency at max RPM. It’s actually okay to be tapering off to the choke point at max RPM in a street application, which is what most factory turbocharged cars do. It is better to optimize peak compressor efficiency for the RPM range where you want to make power. With that in mind I would do the calculation at various engine RPM levels and compare the plot - looking for max efficiency at, for example, 5k RPM. It’s a good sanity check to plot the max RPM too, but not the number I’d care the most about.
I tell people that the basic answer to the right size turbo is the smallest turbo that meant you power needs. Be realistic about your engine's power. Beyond that it start getting mathy.
@@177SCmaro people like to go oversize on turbo, if you live in a area were you don't have a lot of big and long straights is just dumb to have a turbo too big
@@MZopyrusej1 b16 a 2 head b20 block v tec on the too2 los árboles ambos tienen v tec wirh headers yo need to do a gool turbo build somthing of 1000bwith ac😅
Never understood compressor maps from any other YT explanation. You are a gifted teacher. Went through the math with you (using my numbers) and can't thank you enough. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
I just found you recently and I know that I’m late to the party, but your videos are amazing. Short and straight to the point. I’m interested in trying to turbo charge my 2011 Lancer ES as my first project car.
An underrated informative channel if i may say so myself . . . I learned something new about turbochargers . . . Keep it up, and I'll keep watching for sure . . .
You're an absolute LEGEND for posting this type of information and making it so easy to understand. My brothers and I recently picked up a Z32 twin turbo and we plan on converting to single turbo for power numbers around 550-600whp. Now I can figure out exactly what turbo would be best for our goals with this car. Thanks bro :') Keep up the good content!
I just subscribed. I’ve spent about 20 hours trying to find a video with this much detail and information. I’m building a 1.8t vw for 500 hp and trying to make a fun streetable car. Thank you so much for this video and can’t wait to see more!!
Thanks this was really helpful for understanding turbos and how to choose one, im gonna try to turbo a nissan 1996 pick up with a KA24E the Brother of the KA24DE
I’m trying to turbocharge my 02 rsx type s and your video has made it more clear for me to choose a turbo, I also want to learn how to tune as a dream job! Thanks so much for these well informed videos 🙏💯
Brooooo i have an 05 type s that i wanna turbo but i also wanna get bags with some white rpf1s with like my same blue factory color or midnight purple wrap or something idk
Dude, anything that educates a true power enthusiast truly enjoyed your condensed video. The only thing I regret is that it ended! I'm subscribing, keep up the great work!
Love the video, the equations make this much easier. I’m turbocharging a 2003 Lexus IS300 with the 2JZGE VVT-i engine. Sitting in front of a W55 5 speed for now, eventually swapping for a 6 speed CD009. It’ll be a street/drift build!
I hope your not one of them people That block the intersection of the streets that the News Media talks about and gets them confused with Drag racing.....there's no reason for anyone to block off the whole intersection to do Donuts fined a Empty parking lot to do that stuff....besides it's safer to do in a Empty parking lot.
I'm trying to get around 650 wheel horsepower from my 2jz gte vvti, so I am looking for the correct turbocharger for my setup. It is going into my Volvo 940 which of all the cars is the one I love (driving) the most. 😁 Thanks for this video I will soon sit down and calculate if the turbo that I was gonna buy is the right thing for me. Cheers from The Netherlands!
It's just so easy to listen to you, theirs no BS, it's just stuff I need to learn. Thanks man. I'll be watching your videos from now on for my studies!
Appreciate your content - exceptionally made and thank you very much for your efforts!!! Would love to see more! FYI: CALCULATION ADJUSTMENT: Die Volumetric Efficiency rate of your given values 95% should be added at respective 0.95 (not 95) --> or you have to calculate the result again with *100 which makes it more bulky.
My man, you are a life saver. I’ve redone this equation and checked at least 50 times and got a pressure ratio of .4 and was 🤏🏻 this close to going insane 😂
Great informative vid! I think I've watched tons it turbo related vids now and definitely learned a whole lot in this vid about actually selecting the right type. Despite watching so many vids on this topic, I still have a hard time understanding how to set up the different gauges with the wiring, where to tap into what etc. Hoping you go into as much detail as you did with this vid when you get to that part of the build!
I just want to say your channel has seriously helped my knowledge of vehicles!!! Honestly dude you are my favorite content creator and I can confidently say you might be the best out there!
This, and the video before this one, was an awesome video! I’ve been wanting to turbo my 05 Mustang GT, and this helped me a lot with where I need to start!
WOW. Thank you so much MZ!! I just learned something ill never forget, took mad notes as always, damn dude, cant thank you enough I'm doing R&D on my LF 2.0 Sonata to build it :)
I love this video! I am working on finding a larger turbo for my 2018 WRX with the 2.0 FA20F engine, but one that has the best balance possible between fast spool and power up to at least 8k. After watching your video, I FINALLY have a grasp on how to make some sense of compressor maps and use them as a guide to select my turbo!
I appreciate the lesson. Always looking to gain understanding and knowledge. I plan on putting a GTX2867r in my Focus ST. Considered running a 3071, but I haven't decided how far I want to push the car to the limits. My goal is to hit around 350whp and make the car come to life a little more. Fuel will be my limiting factor considering I'll be on 93, no ethanol or aux.
Amazing video, this helped me learn tons about which turbo I will need to use on my G37 coupe street build, ill keep coming back to this video just to make sure I get the right one in the near future!
Just discovered you, you get my sub for sure. This is such an awesome and high quality video and has definitely been saved as a reference. Thanks for teaching me something new today.
came across this while looking to turbo my m50 e34, this video is a huge help in deciding what turbo kit i should choose and what turbo i should get as well.
This was actually very helpful in finding out how big of a turbo I would need in some cars and some physics on how to get certain horsepower. You definitely need more recognition
Wow, this is very informative and cool video! I will be watching this a few more times to help me find what turbo works best for my autocross Supra (7M powered). Thank you for providing this excellent video!
Thank you for this video! Not sure where I’d find these values as in the constants and formulas that you mentioned! Amazing I am aiming for 300 horsepower so thank you!
And thank you so much for the effort to explain all of this I haven’t really found any RU-vidr that takes the time to break it down like that for those of us that know cars but don’t know in depth numbers like that
You just thought me how to calculate and figure out the pressure ratio and mass airflow for my engine and how to use the compressor map to choose the correct turbo for my power goals, forever grateful, thank you!! 🙏
This is the single best turbo video I've came across on youtube. 10/10. I'm not a mechanic, but I am aiming for a 500hp+ 1jzgte build. This is going straight in the favourites. Thank you
Best explanation of how to size a turbo I've heard or read ever. I've seen several other RU-vidrs try to explain it and not get it this well executed. Maximum Boost's publisher should ask you to write the next book for them.
Watched quite a few videos on turbo compressor maps. Yours is without a doubt the best one. Thank you. And to answer your question - I am trying to pick the right turbo for my OM606 that will go into my Nissan Patrol Y61.
Haven't seen a better video about slapping turbo in a car. Wonderful information quality. I'm working on Citroen Berlingo B9, making it as nice and fast as a work van can get so turbo is on the way.🛠️
I love the way you explain things, great job! I'm gonna turbo charge my MB E230 it has a lot of potential. Aiming for first step at 300 HP, then will go up from there.
Since you made such a great video, I feel obligated to answer your question. I've recently learned that a Mitsubishi turbo will take my Rotax 912 UL from 59 KW to 87 KW at 5800 rpm with 6 pounds of boost. There are kits available, but they don't say which model of turbo is used. Now I have the tools (maths) to figure out which model I need. A big thank you for breaking these numbers down barney style.
I just got a 95 Nissan d21 hardbody from a dude who used it to drift. Decided I wanted build it up a bit and get a turbo for it. This vid honestly helped me a ton. I’ve seen a few other turbo vids but all the info just kinda flew over my head. This vid helped me to put everything together. Thanks for the info man, hope the channel blows up!
I hope your not one of them people That blocks off the whole intersection just so you can do some donuts.....find a Empty parking lot to do that....the people that drift and do donuts in the intersection make it look bad on us street Drag racers because the News Media gets Drifting confused with Drag racing because the News Medias doesn't know the difference.....Not saying your the one that's doing it but please for the love of God spread the word and tell everyone to find a Empty parking lot to do your donuts at......peace ✌ and love to all motor sports 🏁🏁
Ive been involved in engineering turbochargers for over 55 years, basically race cars (Road Racing Porsche) drag boats (Big Blocks). This guy is giving you one on the best quick overviews I have ever heard. I have heard a lot of theory and this is close to a good start.😊
Perfect video, I have to check if I bought the right turbo for my setup. Building a Volvo 460 with a Volvo T5 awd drive line, bought a TDO4-20T with a 7cm housing. Keep up the awesome videos, cheers from Sweden.
This has got to be one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. It’s detailed and entertaining at the same time. I’m trying to turbocharge a 2012 Toyota Venza, yes I know, mid-life crisis.
I genuinely am glad you made this I’m trying to turbo an 01 3.6 v6 mustang it’s a 5spd manual hard top bright red can’t wait to have it built I’ve got graphs drawn out and a turbo picked out already for it thanks to this vid keep the good content coming please
I just wanted to leave here an appreciation message for all the work you do. You make the automotive space understandable for everyone. I deeply appreciate the way you explain things, using drawings and graphics to make sure the viewer knows what you are talking about, also you are able to make those math related videos entertaining. I wish you well and keep doing your best:)
Looking towards turbo charging my 2014 Toyota gts 86 and don’t have much of an idea of what kit/turbo I should get. Love your videos though man super informative! 👑
I’m going to have to rewatch this . . . plenty. Thanks for the information. I’m turbocharging an ‘88 Isuzu Trooper 2.6L I4. Trying to get to 220hp from the stock 120. Thanks again for the info. I’ll be checking back in. Peace.
