Take the time to make sure you have a well-organised and redundant system of hard drives for your on-site storage, either with a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) device or with a pair of mirrored internal hard drives inside your computer.
This video shows you how to backup data by setting up a pair of mirrored drives within Windows, so that all data is automatically stored on BOTH drives in case of hard disk failure. The best thing about software-based disk mirroring is it all happens automatically behind the scenes, so you don’t have to remember to make additional copies of your photo, video or audio assets!

I am going to set up a new build with Raid 10 (4x M.2). My question is, in Windows 11, can I add an additional pair of internal SSDs to use to backup the data in the Raid array?

Does the mirrored drive continue to automatically update based on additions and deletions to the source drive?

Yes 👍

Hi. I have two WD hard drives, one is an easystore desktop storage and another one My Book. I would like to configure them as raid 1 using both of them. So whatever I save on 1 of them there is always a backup with the other one, Is that a possibility?
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 3 года назад
Yes, you can do that either in Windows like in this video or at motherboard level with a proper raid controller

@@SwitchedOnNetwork Thank you for your prompt reply. I wanted to test it out first and I grabbed two sandisk 250gb flash drives and formatted them to NTFS but it didnt' give me the option to have them mirror each other? is it because they are flash drives?

@@SwitchedOnNetwork Another question. I see that WD My book Duo has a 28TB option for RAid 1 which would mean you have only one disk 14tb with a copy (Raid 1 by definion). The setup would cost me 1000. Is there a cheaper way to get massive amount of storage (two 14+, preferably 20TB) that I can do a Raid 1. Essentially the question is, I would like to have a cheaper version of the My book duo but with even more memory space, like two disks of 20TB each. and do a raid 1 configuration.

@@davelimonta1 most likely it'll be that the 'easystore' you mentioned doesn't have a RAID controller. As Switched On Network mentioned above.

@@davelimonta1 There ae lots of options for doing this no days. What you seam to be looking for is a NAS. If you have network available you can usually find one that connects VIA ethernet to your modem/router. For something greater the 20TB your best bet would be to connect it to your PC via a PCIe expansion card or USBC/thunderbolt.

Helpful and clear. Note that redundancy is not back up. what if you mistakenly delete your data, or a ransomwere virus encrypts it, or there was fire? What's your solution for backing up the data?
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 3 года назад
You're absolutely right, yes - it's a backup in case of hard drive failure but not against other things you mention so on its own isn't sufficient! But a very helpful step for your primary local storage. External, offside backup essential too!

Also, Windows RAID's are horrid. There is a bug in the 'mirror drive' option where it will constantly try to write a file on the HDD and if you power off it'll corrupt the file without it telling you or replacing it. I ended up with failed HDD's every 3 months on my workstation because of Windows RAID corruptions. These were fixed with a quick format, but as a reliable and headless solution it never worked, and needed constant checking and fiddling.

So with this method can I remove one drive and put it in another computer and access its files? And can I put it back in the original computer and continue with mirrored backups?
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 4 года назад
You should be able to, yes, but be very careful not to delete or add anything whilst it's connected to the other computer, and don't boot up the first computer with the drive detached otherwise it'll probably want to resync when you put it all back together
@giraffeandelf
@giraffeandelf Год назад
No, I learned this the hard way. In much the same way if one drive fails. if you take out a HDD and replace it, windows will complain that the mirror is broken and will need to be re-initialised. The other drive that you add into a separate PC, to restore files, will also moan. You will be able to get your data (mostly) but it'll need to be copied to a regular drive as the Mirror drive will need to be formatted before windows stops complaining. Remember, RAID is not a backup. It is much better in this case to use cmd 'robocopy' and periodically copy your data from HDD to HDD without them being tied together.

This is a really helpful video, but your wire management hurts to look at.
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 4 года назад
Ha, yes you're not wrong there... it's a fair point, the cable management inside my PC isn't great... annoyingly, despite being a modular power supply large parts of it AREN'T modular so there's a huge bunch of cables I'd rather not have there at all (but don't want to cut off and destroy it) and the case itself really isn't great for cable management either - I wish it was just that bit bigger. All poor excuses, I know.... :)

You have a video production company yet you don't seem to understand how audio levels work? The music in this video is too loud in comparison with your relaxed speaking style and the viewer has to work to separate your voice from the music.

Please, can you have NO music basting in the background which is quite distracting. Or simply say NOTHING and have subtitles.
