2012 Odyssey... It all started with watching your front pad video. Since then it's rolled to this transmission fluid change, an oil change, servicing my wife's 2016 Fit, and giving me the confidence to work on my old 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee! Thank you for your confidence inspiring well explained postings! You are awesome!

Thanks for the video. Just a bit about changing the oil intervals. I bought my 2005 Odyssey used with 73000 miles. Have no idea if and when they changed the oil but I now have 200000 miles on it and have never changed the trani oil and it still works perfect. Not suggesting not to change the oil to everyone just don't panic about the exact number of miles.
@nigelio3
@nigelio3 5 лет назад
Yeah, I was in the same boat as you. Bought my 2005 when it had almost the same mileage. Was young and dumb and never thought to check the fluid. By the time I did, at about 120k it was black as sin. I knew (or thought) I screwed up, but knew it was best to leave it. Just sold the van a few days ago with 235k on it. Still drives and shifts great. Not that I'm recommending never servicing your tranny, but if you neglect it like I did early on, might as well ride that baby into the sunset!

Haven't changed the transmission fluid in my mom's 2007 Odyssey. It has over 95,000 miles so it's definitely worth changing the fluid. For some reason, the color of the existing fluid is a nice dark red. Maybe the dealer did change it. Still, definitely time to change it.
@kisangkim1105
@kisangkim1105 5 лет назад
A drain/refill will change only 40%, so I would repeat it in a week after the first change in order to replace about 70% actually.
@kisangkim1105
@kisangkim1105 5 лет назад
Actually the Honda fluid is so high priced.
@mnmurph
@mnmurph 3 года назад
That'll replace closer to 64%
@mnmurph
@mnmurph 3 года назад
Each time you drain it, 60% of the old fluids remains. So the first change leaves 60%; the second change leaves 60% of 60% = 36%; third change leaves 60% of 36% = 21.6%; fourth change leaves 60% of 21.6% = 12.96% ; then 7.8% ; then 4.7%; then 2.8%; 1.7%; 1.0% remains after 9th fluid drain fill...

I have both 1/2" and 3/8" which I purchased at Canadian Tire store in Canada many years back. I also have 1/2" and 3/8" from Harbor Freight. All work fine. Main thing is to take care of it and don't drop it.

Even the lower control arms and the front grill replacing the front bumper and hood. I'll order the front bumper and hood ti change the front look of my 2006 since the main headlights are the same. Also I'm looking forward to install Honda Pilot brake rotors on my ody since they are larger but I'll need to replace the break calipers as well. The guys at Honda Birmingham Alabama advised this: The ody is a nice ride so long you know which mods to do on it.

I believe the fluid level must be checked with the #Odyssey in P Park, at operating temperature and idling. If you check when the car is off you will not see the correct level. Also, when pulling up the dipstick, look at both sides of it, one side may be very clear where the level is and the other side may look spotty and vague and overfill 💪 Awesome video

According to the owner's manual that came with my 2010 Honda Odyssey it says to warm up the transmission and engine and then shut the engine off. Wait at least 60 seconds but no longer than 90 seconds to check the transmission fluid with the engine off and the vehicle in park.

I can't imagine a more perfect instructional video. You must be a tiny, tiny person to be able to crawl under your Odyssey without jacking it up or running it up a ramp. Such skinniness is long ago in my past. And how much ATF did come out? It sure looked like more than 3.3 quarts. I believe the transmission holds about 10 quarts. I wonder if I ran the driver's side wheels up a ramp if that would tilt the transmission enough to allow even more fluid to come out? I'll have to give that a try in a couple days when I do the job.
@gkorenek
@gkorenek 2 года назад
The Odyssey in the video is up on drive-on ramps. I bought a pair from Harbor Freight. I have the same question, if the Ody front end is raised w/ rear on ground, does this influence quantity (less of a complete pan drain) of fluid drained?
@STBRetired1
@STBRetired1 2 года назад
@@gkorenek With front tires on ramps and rear tires on the ground that may be the ONLY way you can reach the drain plugs. I just did the engine oil drain and filter replacement which is all near to the transmission drain plug. It was kind of roomy with the front tires up on the ramps. Without ramps it would be a tight fit. You'd need to be real skinny with long arms.
@gkorenek
@gkorenek 2 года назад
@@STBRetired1 Yes! I'm going to do the AT fluid "drain and fill" with the drive-on ramps at the front. I'm going to use Valvoline Max Life AT fluid. Also would use ramps to do oil change too. I've been using local oil change services (Jiffy Lube, Honda Dealership, etc.) for engine oil and filter changes, and mechanic shop & Honda dealership for ATF fluid drain and fill. I want to start doing the ATF fluid service myself to save some $$. I have the AT drain plug crush washers on order, when they come in (soon) I'm going to do the service myself as in the video. Also need to put together the funnel with tubing to reach the fill plug. Bought a torque wrench as in the video too just to get all the plugs back in and torqued to specs!

@@gkorenek I was all set to do the transmission fluid drain and went over to WalMart to get some Valvoline MaxLife. The website said they had it in stock but the shelves were empty. I was not a happy camper. I checked with Advance Auto and AutoZone and they want $ 10 more PER gallon. So, I ordered it online at WalMart and will have it delivered in two days - right when the rain starts.

@@STBRetired1 I in Walmart, I had to really look for the MaxLife ATF, there were only 3 "jugs" (gallon containers) of it hiding amongst many jugs of motor oil. You can try a fluid change and remove the battery terminal to reset the system, but if it comes back, you may have a bad sensor, or worse is a failing transmission.
@TommyTrungNguyen1
@TommyTrungNguyen1 10 лет назад
Transmission sensor you need to look into...honda odessey 2005 to 2007 was recall on this issue.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 11 лет назад
I highly doubt the ATF DW1 is the culprit here. If there is a long period where the ATF fluid was not changed out, some damage may have already been done. Putting in new fluid that has more lubricating properties may reveal the issue. You should get it checked out by a transmission shop.
@kyongb786
@kyongb786 2 года назад
Sir, you are not going to change transmission oil filter?
@STBRetired1
@STBRetired1 2 года назад
The filter is deep inside the transmission and is not reachable without taking out the engine AND transmission and then taking apart the transmission. Instead, Honda just wants you to "frequently" change the fluid so the filter doesn't get clogged up.

Hi I have a Honda Odyssey 2003 and I ask the mechanic to do transmission tune up but he told me me doesn't believe on that because the transmission build up something inside and that help. No need to do it what you think?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 8 лет назад
+carolina reyes Try another mechanic. It's not a tune up, but just a simple routine maintenance. Transmission fluid is another fluid in your vehicle just like motor oil. It provides lubrication to moving parts. They eventually loose their lubricating property and will wear on the transmission parts. What you don't want a shop to do is a transmission 'flush'. Only have the shop do drain and fill like I showed. In fact, all Honda dealers will only do drain and fill.

I also spent a good half hour trying the get the fill plug off. Breaker bar is a must have for this job. Also, never ever ever use anything other than Honda transmission fluid. It's expensive but it's cheaper then buying a new tranny if you use something else. Same is true for Honda break pads for what it's worth.

Is it black? Can you see tiny metal flakes when you rub the dipstick on your finger?

How do you check the transmission fluid level? I have a 2014 Honda Odyssey, and I don't any see any liquid when the engine is turned off, after running the engine at nominal temperature. Do you check it while its on park and running?

For this Honda Odyssey, you start the car up, and run until it reaches normal operation temperature. Wait until the cooling fan turns on the first time, then shut off the engine. You have 60-90 seconds to check the fluid level, and top off fluid until its between Max and Min mark on the dipstick. This is done while car is in park.

to dial2fast,I have a question? I have 2005 honda odyssey and I have isues with the steering wheel,my odyssey driving on the high way at 65 to 75 mph,some times my steering wheel shakes, I put new set of tires and the problem still on it,do you have the similar problem on your hodyssey, I take the van to different places to do the balancing wheel,Y change the transmission fluid every 10.000 miles , mechanics check the suspension and everithing is good, and the problem still. tanks.

If you have already got new tires and done the balancing, then it's hard to say what it is. Especially to do with a steering wheel vibration at highway speed. Have you tried rotating the tires front to back to see if the problem follows the tire.

You have probably solved your problem already, but just in case other have the problem, I want to share my experience. I had the exact same problem, and tried all the same fixes. I even had some mechanic tell me my tires were not perfectly round which caused the problem. Ultimately, I had one of the fron axles replaced, and that solved the problem.
