In this video I show you how I change the automatic transmission fluid on a Honda Civic 2006 (drain and fill). The exact vehicle is a 2006 Honda Civic EX with an automatic transmission. Doing this procedure every 30, 000 miles can really help keep a Honda transmission in good working order.
Civics with manual transmissions or CVTs will have a different procedure than the one shown on this video.

Most excellent! Some points you might try. Keep and mark ounce levels on some old plastic juice jugs for using. Drain out into one. Put a mark on jug. I use a piece of painters tape. Drain that into another jug and refill with new ATF right to the mark. That way you’re assured of putting in exactly what came out without measuring anything. This approach works great for other car fluids too. These jugs drain overnight almost completely then just a little gasoline in them to clean them up for next time. Mine took 85 ounces or 2.65 quarts. Great video

When I do trans changes I’ve been draining into a 5 quart bucket with measurements on the side so I know how much to refill as a start and sanity check. I’m still laughing because yup my drain came up to 2.5 quarts exactly !!! Soooooo appreciate your vids and yes I remembered to take out the drain bucket before lowering. I’m sure you put the extra don’t forget guys message in because you forgot and heard the ooops I forgot crunch plastic sound of pain.

Great video, concise. Very easy job. I agree with doing this every 30,000 miles. My mom gave me her 2008 Honda Civic with 78,000 miles, which is low mileage for a car that age. I just changed the transmission fluid today (it had never been changed before), and fluid was a grayish brown, instead of red. Was a fair amount of metal sludge on the drain plug magnet as well. I'm going to do one or two more drain and fills in the next few weeks to 'catch it up' and have nice, red transmission fluid.
@tigergreg8
@tigergreg8 Год назад
Wow. A Civic with only 78,000 miles. Geesh, that's no mileage for a Honda. I'm getting a friend of mines Civic in about an month with 163,000 miles. Drives really nice and sounds great. Did you notice a difference with all the changes?

@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 лет назад
Honda makes models with different transmissions, some have a conventional automatic transmission (like in this video) and some have Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs). Most newer Honda now have CVTs. That being said, I am not aware of any 2010 Civics (in the US) that have CVT transmissions. Don't take my word for it, go to a Honda dealer parts department with the VIN and they can tell you what it needs.

Appreciate the video. I am wondering though when looking at another video, and looking at yours. The other guy lifted the car to just loosen the plug, then let the car run until the fan turned on. After that he lifted the car up and drained the oil, is the similar aspect of you running the car for 60 seconds before seeing if the fill line is correct? I didn't see much difference in what you both did, seems straightforward. We all appreciate your help, you know how it is as you're saving us $150 per comment on this post.. Great job man, Please don't forget to answer this. Thank you

Would it be worth measuring what drained? Then matching that exactly to put back in?

Great video. I want to try this on my 2005 Honda Accord. Do you think a Harbor Freight 1.5 ton floor jack is big enough? Do you just use the lowest position on the jack stands? Thanks your channel is great.

Paul Laws Thank you. Harbor Freight jacks are pretty good, shouldn't be an issue. I set my jack stands on the first or second position when doing these. It needs to be high enough to get a ratchet in there but low enough to drain properly.

Big Dog50001 Automotive Great video! Very clear and straight to the point! Helped my boyfriend change my transmission fluid for me =) Where did you get your breaker bar?? All I find for the 3/8 socket are pretty short or less than a foot long. Thanks in advance!

I started losing a quart and a half of fluid a day. I checked my cooler lines going to my radiator and one of them was spinning free. I tightened it will this solve my problem you think?

So do I really need 2.5 quarts? I have never changed it before but on other trans fluid drain and fill videos it says only about 1/3 of the old fluid actually drains out?

Thanks a lot for this video. I've been facing jerks issues while gears change on automatic transmission. Do you happen to know anything about that? It seems similar to the gear oil since the dealer who changed the oil for me two weeks ago, didn't use Honda oil, so I suppose that could be a problem? I have recently bought Honda Civic Reborn 2nd hand, so didn't know about any of this stuff, now that I'm facing the problem, I've come across your video. it helped a lot!

Hard to say from your description but if you are talking about ENGINE OIL, then you can use any good quality motor oil (that is the proper viscosity), it doesn't have to be Honda branded motor oil. Changing your engine oil shouldn't cause hard shifting. If you are talking about AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF), I would not use anything but Honda ATF DW1 for a Honda automatic transmission (non CVT). If other fluid was used, I would do 3 drain and fills to get it out. You may have other issues going on in your transmission and might want to have a pro take a look at it.

Hey BigDog looking to do a drain and fill for a 2013 Honda Civic 9th gen. Is the procedure the same as the 8th gen? Thanks!
