I think the history you often provide in your videos makes a huge difference. It gives newbies and pros alike a reason behind why they do what they do. Having a reason is how one gets great results, learns to experiment, and makes a process their own. Thank you!
I took Mike's class with a group of newbies and we all learned more than we could have imagined. He had every kind of polisher, pad, and product for us to try and made us understand the essentials. We all migrated from one guy's car to the next, and everybody got paint correction/swirls removed. A couple of us got ceramic coated. Highly recommend.
I love the history of Detailing! Meguiar's was really there from the start, that's why it's my number 1 brand in my arsenal !!. Thank you Mike for his superb explanations and details. It was great, super interesting !!! 👍 👍 👍
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've learned a lot from this video. When I learned how to polish cars, it was way back in the days of lacquer finishes and wool bonnets, using machines similar to the vintage Rupes in the video. I've recently ordered a new DA and will be purchasing dozens of foam pads.
Man Mike is a giant. Yancy was standing next to him and just realized how tall he is. He's so knowledgeable. It would be so cool to meet him someday and just pick his brain for a day
Black stuff comes off onto the pads could also be if the car has single-stage paint and especially if it’s an older or classic car with its original paint. Those single stage paints sometimes had lead in them and the dark on the pad is the lead from the paint.
Can u guys make some more videos on product reviews and microfiber plz🥺not just paint correction? Also i left i thumbs up just bc im nice!👍🏼( and i subscribed! )
was curious on polishing/compounding hard paint is it wise to go with a more aggressive pad before going with a more aggressive compound? or Vise versa? Thanks for your time.
On hard paint, typically a compound is needed so using a less aggressive polish won't do too much to remove defects. You could however get away with sometimes using wool blend pads like RUPES DA Yellow Wool pads with a polish to remove defects, so the opposite - an aggressive pad with a fine polish (sometimes works!). Just really depends on the paint and the defects, doing some test spots will determine the route you will end up taking.
Mike If you want to preserve those old pads for a showcase Just soak it really good with fabric protectant and they will last forever as long as they’re not handle too much
Hi Mike, how many wool/microfiber pads would you need to buff a whole car? How would you clean the pads between sections without compressed air? How often would you charge to a fresh new pad? Thanks. Great video.
Aloha; I'm brand new to this, am a 100% disabled Combat Marine on disability, and haven't even purchased polishing equipment yet. I stumbled onto this video, and have learned a lot (I subscribed)! So how do you tell if a paint is hard paint or soft paint? I have a 2008 Chrysler 300C AWD Hemi and a 1992 Ford Bronco EB 4x4 that I want to detail (good practice)! Is there any specific equipment that you can recommend... or think that I should stay away from? I'm thinking this might even be a way to make a little extra money when my pain level isn't too high (money is very tight)! Thank you Jonathan K Smith "Sandman" SSgt USMC Injured/Retired
I painted my old car using rust oleum sprayed from a LPHV paint gun. The job turned out awesome. I would like to wet sand and buff the car. I have a 7” polisher but don’t know what pads I need. Please help steer me in the correct direction! Thanks I’m wet sanding with 2000 grit and have McGuire ultimate polishing compond
What is the difference between the Griots Garage G9 Polisher & FLEX 3401 Polisher ? Which is better for starting out with and why? Take in consideration the cost difference.
The G9 is a random orbit polisher where the 3401 is a forced rotation random orbit polisher. G9 you can stop pad where the 3401 you cant. For a beginner I would suggest the G9. Hope that helps - Yancy
I painted my old car using rust oleum sprayed from a LPHV paint gun. It turned out awesome. I want to wet sand and buff it now. I have a 7” electric polisher but don’t know what pad I should use. I’m wet sanding with 2000 grit and have McGuires ultimate polishing compound. Could you suggest what type pads I should use?
We are not familiar with sanding that type of paint specifically so you will want to do some research. However, to remove sanding marks in general, you would want to use twisted wool pads on a rotary polisher. After using wool pads and a rotary polisher to remove the sanding marks, it would be best to follow up with a dual action polisher and foam pads for the polishing stages as this method would finish out the best.
I detail my own vehicles including my 30' motorhome. However, I'm having problems with my motorhome. I'm using a Meguiar’s D.A. that seems to be to small for the large areas of the motorhome. What do you recommend for pads to polish and wax applications? Rotory or D.A. machines?
Meguiar's WRFC7 for rotary, or DFC5 for dual action. Are really good pads, good cut and finish! Then more aggressive there are rupes blue foam pad "coarse" or lake country HDO blue or rupes UHS but will not finish as well. But a better cut would be with a wool pad or microfiber.! Like lake country low lint lambswool pads, or meguiar's xtra cut disc microfiber pads. Where again a hybrid lake country foamed wool pad purple or blue. Mike will respond better than me!
It depends on the TOOL you're using. There are LOTS of different tools on the market and even more pads to go with them. Let me know what you're using for a polisher and I'll tell you what I think is a great foam cutting pad for it. -Mike Phillips
tough to learn from. I'm trying to find out what pads to use with the porter cable 7424xp ONLY. As a beginner, I need to know what to buy, what to use. Living in virginia now, my red camry has taken a BEATING from the rocks from the CONSTANT road construction. I have to claybar, then compound, then polish, then paint chip fill in, then wax. At least I know the steps now, but it's a BEAR to find out what pads to buy
Do you find pads with abrupt edges vs rounded edges “stalls” a polisher easier on shaped panels? I’ve noticed the Rupes pads stall easier than my Mags or Other pads with rounded edges. Love your thoughts on the.
Had to stop listening to all the Yacking. Just wanted to find out if there is any significance to different color of foam pads. And different textures and patterns on the foam. I'll find out somewhere else.

Almost 2 hours in what could have been said in 15-20 minutes, too much "filler opinion" just get to the talking points and stay on task please. You seem knowledgeable but your message is all over the place. Practice first then stick to the script - thanks
