Very good video! I've used masking tape on the balancer to determine TDC for different cylinders. Cut a piece of masking tape the same length as the circumference of the balancer. Make three equally spaced marks on the tape, put the tape on the balancer starting at #1 TDC. Now when the marks line up with the timing pointer each piston will be at TDC compression following the firing order.

@spelunkerd when pressure is applied (e.g. 100psi), what we are looking for is leakage in the cylinder as compared to the airflow through a 1mm orifice at that pressure. You could use a shut off valve.

make sure it's at tdc between the compression and power stoke. some valve overlap may exist between exhaust and intake strokes.

@liOVERLOADil I do not think letting the engine cool down to take out the spark plugs will effect the test.

@Vintageguy73 I have done the same think to adjust the valves put four marks on the pulley for each cylinder top dead centers.

I had a 86 jetta that tapped like that a couple of years before i gave it away. Important Update: Jan 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be mainly for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.

So, I guess the reason for the pinhole is so that the regulator can't replenish air fast enough to maintain pressure when there is a significant leak. Would an instream shutoff valve accomplish the same thing? Do you think you could eliminate the second regulator and just have a shutoff valve? I find my airhoses tend to leak at those quick connections, which might confuse the readings....

I checked the rotor in the distributor to make sure it was pointing to the cylinder i was working on before i started.It does make you wounder because of all the leak down.

@wangbungal The dip stick tube or pcv hose all lead to the crankcase.

TDC is also done to make sure valves are closed. Of course it is true that if the engine is locked, and the cylinder you are testing is on compression or power, this wont matter as much.
@ModStarCrash

Hey Rich are you sure you weren't at TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke? That would explain the pressure escaping through the exhaust valve.

Hi Rich: I ended up buying one from OTC off of Amazon. I couldn't find the parts to make one for less then the cost of buying one. The pressure regulator was the part I had trouble with the local stores all wanted $30 or $40.

@darkfyre2k7 from the looks of your tests, if not replace the engine, you would have to send it in for some machine work. the bore of the cylinder is probably just as worn as the rings. A machinest would bore out the cylinders, and you always want to replace the rings on every piston, not only because they come in a set, but because replacing only one piston ring set would cause uneven compression anyways. and your test also indicates you probably need a new head gasket...

You should be holding the crank Pulley because it will turn the hole motor over where it will open the Valve

@richpin06a well it vibrates a lot when it's cold, but that might just be from imbalanced compression, or so I'm told... would that be a sign that the crank is trash? did the leak down test and it's only rushing through the oil filler... even did a head check and a rad check, no sounds coming from those and no bubbles in the coolant resevoir

Piston has to be under compression stroke, also.

@darkfyre2k7 Hard to say you would have the measure the crank to see what condition it is in.

Hi Rich Pin: Thanks for the video. Nice to see an "old school" man building his own tools. I am thinking of building one of these LDT but wanted to have a two gauge system right at the tool because my air supply gauge on my compressor has a lot of hose between it and the connection point. Instead of a plug if I put a second gauge in the regulator would that serve my purpose to have an accurate reading? I think so but am not positive.
@jjbailey01
@jjbailey01 7 лет назад
Seadawg I'm fairly certain you are right. As long as one gauge is on the upstream side of the epoxy orifice and the other gauge is on the downstream side in order to measure the differential pressure and get the the percentage reading.

How can you get a proper test if the engine has been sitting for so long and the piston isn't lubricated? Won't air just come out of everything if not properly lubricated?

I have a 97 dakota V6 with ring leaks, and the local garage said replace the engine... would just replacing the rings be okay? they only went out 160 miles before testing compression... readings were from cylinder 1-6, 145, 140, 100, 120, 75, 95... the guy said that something like replacing rings would blow the bottom end out because of stress attributed to power returning. is he right?
@Filmaker25

Will this cause a tapping sound in the cylinder? I have a slow leak around the head gasket and I have a tapping , at least when it's cold in the morning then it goes away.
@RichpinTv
@RichpinTv 12 лет назад
It could be the head gasket or a crack in those two chambers.

I have an engine that's using a lot of oil. 1 quart per 500 miles. It's a Honda Civic-2004. Would this test tell me where I was losing the oil. The engine is a used replacement engine supposedly with only 60,000 miles on it. It's under warranty and I want it replaced because it is using so much oil.

Hi, can the seafoam remove carbon deposit on leaking valve ? so it will fit again? Thanks
@schigara
@schigara 8 лет назад
Never tried Seafoam because water is free and works great. Get the engine up to operating temperature and find a vacuum source on the manifold that has a small diameter vacuum line. Get a gallon of water and, with the engine running and at operating temperature, have a friend hold the throttle at 2500-3000rpm and submerge the vacuum line in the water and let the engine ingest the water. The throttle will need to be modulated to maintain the 2500-3000rpms. Let is ingest water for a few seconds and then lift the line out of the water to let the steam stop and the engine recover for a few seconds and then repeat until the water has been used. You will see a lot of white steam come out the exhaust. The water turns to steam in the engine and shock cools the carbon which causes the carbon to break free. Ever seen how clean and carbon free a piston crown, cylinder dome and valves are after and engine has been running for a while with a blown head gasket where coolant has been entering the cylinder? Same principal. Many people will say, "Whooooaa dude, your gonna suck in too much water and hydro lock and break a piston or bend a rod!!". Well, that's why we use a small diameter vacuum line and port to suck the water in with. We don't want to use anything large like the brake booster vacuum port. With a small vacuum port and line, the water is pulled in at such a low volume this is a non issue. This is an old timer mechanics method I learned 20 years ago from a 45 year veteran mechanic. I have used this method to clean carbon from valves, piston crowns and combustion chambers on well over 250 cars and works a dream.

You’re doing the test wrong. Here’s how it should be done. First. You need over 100 PSI coming from the compressor. Second. Since you’re using the main line reg and gauge you don’t need a reg on the tester. Third. You should have the tester connected to the cylinder from the start. OK, once all that is done You adjust the main reg in your system to 100 PSI. Then you subtract whatever the reg on your tester says from the man line reg to get your percentage of leak down.
