thanks rich, you're a badass you know that :) one tip on mixing epoxy/JB. put both components into one corner of a plastic bag and massage it. once it's ready just cut the end of the bag with scissors and use it like pastry bag for decorating cakes. no mess and really easy.

I just read this on "Ford-Trucks Forum" where a forum member was building the same and referring to this video. I also saw the same done from my Google Search......"So, we could get around the lack of repeatability by using a Holley main jet of .040" diameter for the orifice. They are cheap and easily acquired, but would make the process of building the tester a bit harder since you'd have to drill the JB Weld with a 7/32" bit and then tap it with a 1/4-32 tap to take the threads of the jet."

Here's what the "evolutionm forum" stated: "Anyone who knows anything about the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) knows FAA doesn't screw around when it comes to engine maintenance standards. FAA established the standard for leakdown testing, and requires a 1mm (.040") orifice be placed between the two gauges. In other words, when pressure is applied (e.g. 100psi), what we are looking for is leakage in the cylinder as compared to the airflow through a 1mm orifice at that pressure."

Hi Rich, Great video. At 1:30 you say "I'll take the valve out of the compression tester hose". Do mind explaining that more. Also, the commercial testers that I have seen have 2 gauges, but I guess only 1 is needed? Thanks, Glenn
@justbuggin67
@justbuggin67 11 лет назад
Thanks and thanks for showing how to use it on a vw engine. Ill be using it for 2 vw 1200cc motors. Stupid question, you mention using a compression gauge hose but you have to remove the valve stem. Can you reinstall the stem or is will the hose only be used for the leak down tester after you remove it
@justbuggin67
@justbuggin67 11 лет назад
Seems like you can add a 2nd gauge just before the pipe with jb weld and after the regulator to create the dual gauged leak down tester. Am I correct in this assumption?

@dtrrtd774

Doesn't the depth of the JB Weld used for the orifice alter the flow? If it were an orifice drilled into a thin metal plate vs. an inch thick plug, as extreme examples for comparison, wouldn't the amount of leakage change? Maybe it doesn't matter in this application, but I was thinking it would be like comparing air flow through a 2 foot hose vs a 100 foot air hose of the same diameter, where I'd expect the short hose to flow more.
@davidtyndall8880
@davidtyndall8880 7 лет назад
If you were flowing into "free air" the length of the orifice would come into play but in a leak down tester you are mostly flowing from one pressure value to a lower one but not to a "zero" pressure. The flow rate would be a great deal less. In other words the length of the orifice should not matter a great deal.

@tmackinator

The size of the restriction orifice has a direct effect on the rate of leak-down . The larger the orifice, the greater the leak down percentage for a given initial pressure. I believe that most leak-down gauges use a .040 diameter restriction orifice to work with a 100psi initial pressure. In your second video where you say you have 60% leak-down, that is not accurate. You have no baseline comparison to make such a statement. Your tester could only be used as a relative comparison between the cylinders on the motor. I doubt your engine has a 60% leak-down unless it is really worn out. You may want to make a slightly more precision orifice of .040 dia and compare your results. I'm not saying this as criticism at all, your vid was good. Only for information.

tmackinator......what is your point.., exactly..? Are you implying that richpin06a is incorrect.., by indicating the use of a #60 drill bit..? If so.., perhaps kindly check 'your' information.., as you are incorrect. The ( #60 ) drill bit..., is in fact... a .040 size bit.., and not.., .060.., that you seem to be inferring. Go back to 1:18 and observe.., then do your homework before... "not saying this as criticism at all". As you will see for yourself.., and lectured at length about.., your recommended.., precision orifice.., of .040 dia.., is..., correctly indicated by this gentleman.., with the instruction to use a #60..., aka .040" dia. drill bit. I'm not saying this as criticism at all.., only for information.., correct information.., as provided.., in this well organized and helpful video. Thank-you richpin06a..., Cheers to you Sir.

+D. Kendrik Well I'm not one to admit an error on my part. I did not see the beginning of the video . I misunderstood the drill to be 1/16 not a #60. However my information was quite correct about the design of the tool. My comments were not done in a critical manner. I was not trying to be critical. I said his video was good. What should I have said? Take a chill pill!

Ok I found a regulator for 10 bucks at Orielly's with a gauge. I just have to get a couple of fittings and make the damper or orfice. I believe I have a blown head gasket on my Ford Windstar mini van. I can hear a puffing under the hood and I've been losing water but not getting oil in water or visa versa. I believe its the middle cylinder leaking to the outside of the engine from the head gasket. The engine sets sideways against the fire wall. I can unplug the fuel injector on that cylinder and the RPM doesn't drop at all like it does on the other cylinders. I want to build one of these leak down testers to try and determine if the head gasket is actually blown. I'm afraid it its though. It will be fun doing the leak down test at least, except for finding top dead center on those cylinders against the headwall. There has to be a pain in the ass somewhere in the mix no matter what you do. LOL!

Why was a #60/.04" hole chosen for the size of the restriction and how was this determined? I'm assuming it has something to do with the volume of air that could conceivably leak past the rings/valves etc but I'm not sure. Is there a formula to calculate a restriction size for different operating pressures? I imagine a larger hole at 100psi would give you a lower value for the leak percentage so this is relatively important.....
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 5 лет назад
Yes, the 1mm or #60 Drill size 0.040 inch reference metering orifice is to develop a differential pressure that is proportional to flow volume. The 1mm or #60 Drill size 0.040 inch metering orifice is capable of being accurate over a wide range from about 70 to about 125 PSI air pressure on engines with cylinder bore diameters from 2.5 to 5 inches. This is from published data by the FAA. There are several online academic papers that describe the physics, mechanics and math calculations involved.
