Yall can keep your tech. I'm 48 years old, 3rd generation, professional driver since 21 years of age. All the real deal pros will know what I'm about to explain: very few things in my life compare to the feeling of being 'one' with a loaded tractor trailer, with a strong 550 6NZ CAT, rowing thru the gears of your 18 speed Eaton, watching the boost guage climb to 35 as the turbo spools up, easing off and with 2 fingers over the shifter, going for the next gear, smooth as butter! Knowing that you can successfully, cleanly, smoothly handle any road or situation that's put in front of you 'cause you got the finesse and experience to pull it off. Pride in the ride! And for me this stuff you describe takes all that away. I will hold on to and rebuild the old school until they pull my cdl or I'm in the ground!

See this is the problem I see. I am a major airline pilot and the issue with autopilot is that it severely reduces the skill of the driver/pilot over time. We have been using autopilot for years and have started to focus on hand flying more and more for safety. The FAA has been having us focus on hand flying the airplane more and more. We have gotten the data on autopilot and it has been proven to reduce drivers skills.

@@chrisjohnson8451 at that point it would be too late. They’d just update the software to do all the driving. Giving away your career by accepting “a small change” isn’t bright. We have enough jobs that have completely been erased by technology, this isn’t a bright move for truckers if you value your income. And those that say, it’s just like an automatic transmission making your job easier… no, it’s quite literally nothing like it. It takes all of the responsibility off the driver. If this system caused a wreck, you wouldn’t be held liable.. and hence, it’s just a step in the right direction to taking your job from under you.

Driving Autonomy is a long long way off but I agree with Chris the airline pilot. These systems will overtime erode the skill of the operator. I can see if a driver gets use to having this system take over driving on the freeway what happens to the driver, complacency and to have an 80,000LB rocket traveling down the freeway at 70MPH with a driver relying on autopilot is a bit worrisome.
@samr5075
@samr5075 2 года назад
This will erode our industry even more. Like Chris said. We already have automatic trucks and that takes away for a lot of drivers who have never driven manuals the actual feel and temperament of your truck. It doesn't matter if it's a freightliner or a Peterbilt or an international. Every truck drives different. And it's important to be in tune with those feelings of that truck, especially if you run the mountains either east or west coast. It's also important to be in tune with that so you know when something is wrong. I'm not saying everybody has to drive a manual long nose and as someone who has driven automatics I definitely appreciate the convenience of them. But with autonomous trucks eventually you're going to get more accidents for when the computer system fails and you're going to get more people that are not qualified to do this job. And this lifestyle. Not saying all technology is bad because it's not but when it goes wrong it goes really wrong especially with big machinery like this.

On a Cascadia you can override the automated manual and choose your own shift points. I don't see a problem with this tech.
@Evo8fan
@Evo8fan 2 года назад
Even though this company says they have no intention of taking drivers out of trucks, I still believe this kind of technology has no place in trucks. We already have trucks with adaptive cruise, collision avoidance, lane deviation and blind spot monitoring. Already having this existing tech in trucks available to the companys and drivers is making drivers incredibly lazy and dependent on it. It puts them in a mindset that the truck will do all the work for them and keep them safe when in reality it won't. Technology fails. I have driven the trucks with all the sensors and cameras and ones without. I'll stick with the ones that don't have it.

I think we're decades away from true autonomy (operatorless) in trucking, rail, and even aviation. While we have these systems it's important to remember that liability legislation still requires a human operator for verification. However unlike rail and aviation which are highly regulated, the roads are not. How this system reacts to a suicidal 4 wheeler driver who cuts in front of the truck and stomps on the brakes because you "cut them off" at the on ramp 50 miles ago is another question altogether.

The thought of an autonomous 35,000+ lb. tractor trailer is scary. We already have autonomous cars going rogue, imagine a tractor trailer! Definitely something for the way future. Our roads need to accommodate such rigs. With the amount of traffic on our highways, this needs to be considered before setting this idea into motion.

I drove a Cascadia with all the "safety" devices like Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, etc, etc, and I HATED it!!! The alerts were more distracting than ANY roadside sign, and I especially despised the Adaptive Cruise - for the simple reason that when you wanted to pass a slower-moving vehicle, the computer would reduce your speed to that of the vehicle ahead of you, making it all but impossible to pass. These so-called "safety" devices/software/scanners are going to make trucking more dangerous - not safer - because many new drivers won't know what to do or how to do it when the software inevitably glitches or just plain quits working. What does this system do when a tire blows, either on the trailer, the drives, or the steering axle? A skilled driver knows how to handle the truck when something goes wrong, either on the highway or in the city. A computer won't, and the technology doesn't exist yet (and likely won't in our lifetimes) for a computer to know how to handle an adverse situation. About the only "safety" device I'll tolerate is the Blind Spot Warning, and even then I want to be able to disable it in the city - as the damned thing kept going off when a car would run next to me in the merge lanes. Extremely annoying. I'll stick to trucks where a driver has to pay attention all the time, and not rely on some computer to tell me how to change lanes, if someone's in my blind spot, etc.

impossible to pass?😂 i drive a cascadia and all you have to do is turn off the cruise control, i’m excited for the future of trucking, with electric trucks around the corner, and now autonomous way done the line, can’t tell you how many times these old guys in their 379’s or w900s who would ride your ass in the right lane cuz there too lazy to move over and then they cut you off to show you how big there ego is, glad when i see stuff like this that is coming cuz it will make these boomers quit and get out of trucking. So, I'm very new to trucking. Today was my second day in my trainer's truck. I come from 18 years as an automotive mechanic for Ford, Nissan, and Chrysler. This topic came up today while we were working today. I firmly believe that fully autonomous vehicles (be they cmv or passenger) will not happen until all human driven cars are removed from the road. A computer will NEVER be able to fully respond to human input correctly because humans on a whole have little to no logic. Look at how many people have problems with operating system updates, when the basic control of a windows based computer hasn't changed in nearly 30 years

This is more proof that sky-net will soon be taking over. A basic tenet of engineering is " less is more." In other words, the fewer moving parts involved, the better. Our trucks are already over-engineered, with extra systems waiting to fail and put money back in the dealerships hands. Looks like a cool add on for a 4 wheeler but for us, I just see down time when parts fail. Great video BTW 👍👍

The way Uber didn't kill the taxi industry. iTunes didn't kill record stores, newspapers, comic books, novels...streaming made it so much better for the customer. Instead of watching TV for free, you have to subscribe to dozens of PPV channels where the customers and employees lose, but the head of the tech company wins. Helping humanity has nothing to do with it. Its all about taking money from one industry and funneling it to a few people.

All this is going to do is make it so people with no skills can drive a truck, kinda like what automatic transmissions has done but on a whole other level! Look at the rate of truck accidents I'm willing to bet they went on the rise and started to skyrocket when automatic transmissions became standard equipment, just made it so people with lower skills could drive and that's where the industry went backwards. At least the standard transmission weeded out those low skill driver's. My opinion if you can't learn the skill of shifting a manual transmission you have no business operating a truck.

My issue with all the electronics in our trucks is that when they fail and as often as they do it ads one more element to the job that hinders your reliability to the customer. I cant have any failures in my truck. I currently drive a new Kenworth 880 and the electronics have left us stranded and delayed making customers hesitate on keeping us due to reliability. Just in the last couple years getting things fixed due to parts shortages etc has added one more element to an already stressful job. I hesitate to ad any more electric issues to fail on my truck. If I am already sitting in the seat I might as well drive while I am sitting there. Great video and information but I still think I will pass on the technology of this.

Nice, so basically taking "baby steps" towards autonomous vehicles to make operating a big rig easier and more comfortable for the driver, but not designed to take away their job entirely. I'm probably guessing out of the 5 levels of automatrion (6 if you include level 0), where level 0 requires full manual control at all times, and level 5 where everything is completely automated and humans basically turn into squishy and very delicate packages (no offense to anyone) that get delivered by robots, systems like these are probably level 2 or level 3?

These are nanny systems for mega carriers to utilize less than proficient foreign drivers. Seems like trucking these days is about treating everybody like we’re in 3rd grade. I’ve driven trucks with nanny lane departure and collision avoidance. They suck !! Sudden braking, for no reason, beeping when along a guard rail. I love my glider,ungoverned, big Cat powered 18 speed truck. Either be unmanned completely autonomous, or let the driver drive.

I agree those systems right now are garbage. This one was not like those you have on your truck. But I do agree there is a lot of problems that come along with these technologies. It really forces us to think. I don’t know if it’ll ever truly make it but it’s cool none the less

Shelby .... I will be honest .... I think for the new generation (and the 10yr long drivers) it might be helpfull .... as for me however (gotten my CBL revoked last year due to me losing 68% lungcapacity because of unloading in a cloud of chemical leaks without a smell) I wouldn't be able to trust it blindly after 38 years of long haulage trucking .... I know, us oldtimers are a stubborn bunch. As ever, it was again a great video, but I do miss Dakota as your co-pilote.

Hey thank you so much for your comment. I agree it is definitely a pill to swallow for many. I can see uses for it and I can see great downfalls for it. Long story short I am not sure full autonomous trucks will ever make it, but I’m open to seeing where this can go. :)

Autonomous trucks will do great until one goes 300 miles down the interstate with the trailer on fire because the fire isn't tripping the right sensors. And of course any pack of criminals can force an AI truck to stop just about any time they want.

What would make anyone (from owner/operator to mega carriers) want to financially invest in this technology when there is already someone (the human driver) doing this job? It just seems like a half @$$ move towards complete autonomy.

Autonomous systems geofenced outside metro areas on interstates would be where legislation needs to focus on to not eliminate commercial drivers. This would keep drivers where they would be needed most where traffic & complex routes would benefit from a human's ability to operate in a flow state. But, using autonomous driving where a driver can rest while the truck travels on the open road. Allowing non-team drivers to cover longer distances in a shorter time, and less fuel burned idling while hours reset.
@Krieghandt

Depot to Depot, like what you did a lot for FE, yes, those days are numbered. But the majority of last mile pickups and deliveries are not predictable, planned, or well laid out areas. In fact, SuperTruckerDan goes to places that require a skilled driver just to reach the loading/unloading point. Add in construction sites, road construction, and insanely designed city streets, and it's going to be a while before truckers lose their jobs. Now, can semi-autonomous driving help truckers? Absolutely. Blind spots, dull stretches of highway, driver monitoring, and the way they automatically avoid jack-knifing are all great benefits. One thing I do foresee, is slower speeds. Air resistance is exponential, and really starts to affect fuel economy at 45 mph. If you don't need to stop every 11 hours for 10 hours, you can go the same distance at 1/2 the speed, saving tons of money. This will require a change in state laws. As you are aware, semis may not group in more than 3s. This is because in the '70s, semi convoys were literally blowing cars off the highway. Well, at 45 mph, that is not an issue. So I expect semi trains/convoy will be permitted, but not above 45 mph. And if they can drive for 21 hours, it won't matter.

So when the software goes awol and the driver gets into an accident, it's going to be the driver that gets the fines or jail time that's in the truck, not the software manufacturer. I trust this as much as I trust the person walking truck to truck asking for a couple dollars for gas. I don't agree with promoting technology that's not going to improve the ind ustry, but make drivers less in control of the vehicle. Thumbs down from this trucker

Did you know the big carriers are the #1 investors in autonomous tech? I have heard big carrier execs say their vision is for a human driver to take the truck from the dock to the freeway where he will get out & the truck will continue on its way unattended. When the truck gets to its exit, it will be met by another human driver who will take the truck from the exit to the dock. Once this comes to be and the human drivers are doing very little the exec said they hope to drive wages down to minimum wage. Once trucks can do this, the engineers will continue to work on the system until they enable the trucks to get themselves to & from the docks with no human drivers required. ! !

That company is trying to develop a driver assistance type system that the insurance companies will never let their policy holders use. Its going to far. But there absolutely are other companies trying to develop a FULLY autonomously operated truck that COMPLETELY takes the driver out of the picture. DONT let this company pitch fool you. They are working to get rid of driver operation too. This is just the first faze of their goal.. Drivers should be doing everything they can to not support these types of engineering companies.. THEY DONT CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DRIVER OR OUR INDUSTRY. THEY ARE JUST LOOKING TO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY.

Good LORD NOOOOOOOOOO! who in their right mind wants an "autonomous" class 5-8 truck rolling down the road/freeway/highway at posted speeds? I started my CDL career in 1983 and logged over 2 million miles incident and accident free. This did not happen by me being relaxed due to feeling that there is an "autonomous" being in control when I get relaxed/lazy/complacent about my job as a "professional" driver who is SUPPOSED to be in total control at ALL times. "it is a very sophsticated system" but makes the driver relaxed and that is Dangerous! Some things just should NOT be invented or utilized in all aspects of jobs. Accidents are bad enough and for a "professional class 5-8 driver" they should NOT have any extra reasons/excuses for an accident. A professional driver should have their hands on the wheel at ALL times and eyes on the road at ALL times and adding this system only adds to the driver decline of skills. I trained and watched many many drivers over my career and I can tell you first hand that systems like this should never be allowed in this commercial application as it makes for a lazy and less skilled driver pool, in my humble opionion!

They already replaced cashiers at Walmart and now we are next.. You never asked how it will affect all truck drivers pay…..????? Corporations probably will want to pay less to drivers since they spent money on that technology. Leave truck drivers alone..all we want to do is drive & work.🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨

I don’t think this technology will ever take away the need for a human operator in the seat. But I’m excited for the tools to make things easier. I don’t thing it will ruin the drivers…Just help. I’ve come from a heavy equipment operator background. There are certain “tools” put in the bigger equipment that I’m sure the old men bucked against when it first came out. Things like bucket levelers, and boom kick outs at the top and the bottom on large loaders. I can see those men saying “Well in my day, we leveled our own buckets, and knew when we were up over the truck…We don’t need this stuff.” But from my perspective, you can pull back on your boom lever, and take a bite of a sandwich while it raised itself, and kicked out at the height you set. And your hand wouldn’t have to be glued to it for the whole motion. Same with leaving the truck, and booming back down. It will let itself down to the ground, and land already level to dig….all while the operator gets a drink of water, lights a cigarette, or whatever……Those automated tools didn’t ruin the loader…Just took some of the load off the operator. I feel it will be the same with these trucks.

Semi truck drivers have to be conditioned to pay attention for 10+ hours for driving next to and near other public drivers. I see this system deconditioning drivers as they rely more and more on the autopilot. So drivers WILL stop looking ahead 2-3 miles relaying on the computer to do it for them. Is this computer system gonna watch for brake lights just as they disappear around a curve as traffic stops around that curve out of sight. It doesn't matter if the driver hit the brakes or the truck. It can only stop so fast. Is this system gonna to decide to take it's own life and run off the road in order to save the 30+ people stopped in front of this system. As soon as you stop thinking while you are in control of a 40ton battering ram going down the public highway/interstate you are out of control. Extreme example I know but this scenario (trucker takes own life to save others)have happened. There is only one death so mainstream media doesn't pick it up. Google Sheriff calls trucker a hero. truck runs off road to save lives. Trucker’s final actions

The driver will never be eliminated. This technology cannot watch the load on the trailer. Chains and strap’s can stretch and loosen. Loads can shift, especially on our crumbling neglected infrastructure. It’s required by law to stop and check your securement after the first 50 miles and every 150 miles or three hours afterwards. This system will not fair well when a car cuts in front of it and brake checks on ice and snow covered roads. Drivers will always be required and maybe the better solution is to remove the car drivers and make the car’s autonomous.

For me , even with the current frieghliners, tech is faulty . It thinks your on a collision path and you aren’t , and it slams on breaks, or it’ll ride behind slow traffic forever instead of just moving over , but also still having to hold the wheel while it drives . If I’m holding the wheel , I might as well drive .

Truck drivers don't just drive the trucks. Depending on the job, many of us do have to load and unload freights. We have to drive thru bad weathers, city traffics, and some places don't even have traditional roads. I won't be watching your video since it's a waste of time. Wake me up when they have a truck that can go from a warehouse, drive 4 hours to New York City and go into Brooklyn, find the store and then find an open space near the store, and then either pull in or back in. If they could achieve that, I would be interested. Until then, your video is a waste of time. We all already know autonomous trucks can work under ideal conditions. I was an electrical engineer and we already have AGV many many years ago and they work perfectly under ideal conditions.

Loved the instruction / introduction video. I had to laugh at all the "I need to be in control" comments from drivers that drive other people's equipment. If you want control then spend the money, make the investment, and risk the loss caused by your actions. I hate the idea of autonomous vehicles for the most part, however, with the amount of "in control" drivers (4 wheelers too) on the road that cut you off, brake check, speed, and generally make a pros job more stressful, maybe it's time for AI to lessen the amount of road rage brought about by loss of control "in control" drivers. Be safe out there and remember, even with AI you are still in control. You can still run in to that fool that cut you off and brake checked you.

Still won’t work or replace trucking, not financially feasible. Nor will it replace human intuition no matter how many cameras you place on it. I understand the need for these systems but I think the lane change crap hurts the driver more than helps. It forces it into the lanes against the driver. Which can cause problems. Also the more electronics systems the more that will break down. With time. You’ll always need a driver and oversight. I wouldn’t trust this to drive completely

Self driving trucks make it where companies can get rid of experienced drivers hire in rookies at a lot lower pay to maximize profit. You are taking the human and common sense out of the truck and replacing it with A.I. An automated truck can't determine or predict a road rage driver that determined to crash a truck. If a lunatic in a another semi or car wants to wreck that truck they will manage to do so and a self driving truck and unexperenced driver can't counter it. Any driver today that had been out here for years endorses these trucks then they are idiots.
