Autopsy of a gas valve

This one disassembles a failed gas valve on a unit heater to see what happened to it. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

Merry Christmas and happy new year to you in 2021! I really appreciate u shareing your knowledge with everyone!! Especially me. Through your knowledge I am able to keep the furnaces I own running safely! Today the local plumbers are on holiday, i could not even get a after hours on call number off the machine. it was -36 here this morning. Turned out it was a high limit switch that failed. I can’t afford to look 👀 at what’s inside a gas valve till I have a failed one lol!! Thanks for all your videos

Ironic, I just took apart my Honeywell smart valve over the holidays. The valve would click off even though it was getting a constant 24 volts. I tested the two capacitors on the board with my ESR meter and they had gone high resistance.

Interestingly enough, where im at we only have propane. often times we get sticking valves, bang on it with something and it unstick for a few fires then restick. I have had a couple different years where it get a lot of valves sticking, never really put it together but last year I started asking customers who their propane provider was. After getting 6 gas valves from the same provider I caught up with one of the drivers and asked if there was any correlation to this or just coincidence. He told me their is a product they use to keep the propane from having moisture(the name reminded me of "calgon" soap commercial), and he said they didnt mix enough of it in so they had a run of no heats with water in gas valves.....I dont know that that is what you got but rather interesting to see water in a gas valve.

I always give my gas valves a good whack before replacing. So far I've gotten 2 seasons out of it. But this other furnace no such luck. I get two successful whacks and it last a few days. Finally replaced it today. I have natural gas. It's a 2 stage valve and I'm going to open it to see what's wrong. I'm suspecting corrosion or clogging and the whack would loose the suspecting ”gremlin"

Thanks for making this video! I learned a lot from your other videos about valve chains vs. modern valves. I am trying to troubleshoot a SIT-NOVA gas fireplace (Majestic). Could you do a tear-down video of a modern fireplace valve? I'm dealing with a fireplace that won't start. First thing I did was clean up the thermopile. The mfg. spec says it needs 150 mV when "on". My original thermopile hovered right around 150 (when off, it read 300-400 mV), so I decided to replace it with a 750 mV one from Amazon that matched the p/n in my manual. The new one produces pretty much the same "closed" voltage, maybe a little bit higher when the call switch is "open". As it hovers in the 150mV to 155 mV range, the fireplace will "usually" but not always turn on the main gas. Interestingly, when I short out the TH terminals at the valve (I have a simple switch, not a thermostat), the main valve NEVER turns on. Makes no sense to me. Sometimes lightly tapping the valve get it's to open when the voltage is hovering around 151. I wonder if something electrical is wrong inside the valve. I've tried adjusting up the pilot to increase the temp on the thermopile . I'd like to tear apart the valve to see what could be the problem, but since it's possible I just get a bad thermopile from Amazon, I hate to break the valve.

Be sure all terminals are clean and tight. If no help, the valve may be failing. GFM

If the pilot lite is yellow and lazy, you can blow air across it. If it turns blue and ruffled, it may start working. You can also replace the thermopile. GFM

I never knew what they looked like from the inside. I still don't get how thermal couples generate enough electricity to power the gas valve solenoid.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 2 года назад
In most valves, they do not. The thermocouple holds open a safety valve to keep the gas flowing. When the thermocouple does not produce enough power to hold the valve open due to the pilot light being out, it closes and shuts down the main gas and pilot gas. GFM

What would be the danger in reconnecting the wire back onto the connector from the solenoid? The solenoid obviously cannot engage without current so where's the liability?
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 6 лет назад
You could. The problem is the gas valve must be completely disassembled and will probably leak when put back together. GFM

I see your point. As a technician why bother trying to repair this when the correct approach is to replace it The customer is paying for it anyways and you don't have to come back in the event it should fail as it would now be a warranty item should that happen. But if your stranded somewhere and the parts are difficult to acquire or obsolete this is a very good video showing the workings of the gas valve!

I’m surprised that a thermocouple generates enough current to power an electro magnet (solenoid). We had a problem here where there was water in the natural gas, taking out a lot of furnaces in my area. Gas company’s fault.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 6 лет назад
It does not actually pull in the solenoid. You have to hold the armature to the electro magnet and the thermocouple power will hold it. GFM

Have a Tran XE 60 furnace, from 1988. Pilot light will not stay lit. Have 24 millivolts across thermocoupler, 26 volts across gas valve terminals, continuity across thermocoupler connection on gas valve and body of gas valve. Gas valve is a White Rodgers Model 36C53. Have replaced gas valve twice in the last two years. Any ideas as to what my problem may be?
@grayfurnaceman

Your unit has an ECO connection at the gas valve. If the ECO is open, the pilot will not stay on. Could be from an overheat problem. GFM

Hi, Update, I can now keep the pilot light on but when I turn handle to burner position, then the pilot light goes out. I did manage to get the furnace running twice but after one minute the burner goes out. Can you tell me where is the Energy cutoff switch on this gas valve? Could my pilot light be to strong a flame causing the cutoff? Have adjusted it to no resolution. Thank you for your sharing your knowledge and your understanding of DIY.

So wait a minute technically couldn't you just strip that wire reconnected to that screw put a new liquid gasket around it put it together let it dry and it work?

Technically, but there is some things that its best to not be liable for.

yes, but never repair/rebuild a gas valve, as it's a major liability issue as "Performance Based Heating & Air" noted :)

clarksafg if it was your gas valve, and you would be present whilst it was operating, and it was a matter of fix it or freeze to death, then yeah by all means do it. Otherwise I’d be telling the customer to go wrap herself up in blankets till the old one has been replaced.

My gas valve on my fireplace wont open to ignite the burner. The pilot stays lit. Im getting good voltage from the thermopile (600millivolts DC) but when the unit calls for heat by turning on the wall switch I have near zero millivolts. Is this an issue with the thermopile or a possible issue with the gas valve
