A couple crucial finishes to last round games are examined: Alexandra Kosteniuk - Ju Wenjun and Yury Kryvoruchko - Jiri Stocek. How do you go about holding a worse ending, and how did these players fail to do so?

I was really impressed by Ju Wenjun and Ding Liren in that last round. Winning in a long endgame with a false draw claim in the middle is very difficult and I dont know how Ding just draws with black so easily against the best players. I would be surprised if there is no chinese world champion in the next 15 years. I also like that "patzer sees a check, patzer plays a check" still applies to GMs sometimes

@34:16 I think black can maybe even hold here? ...f4 Kxh7 f3 Bg1 Kc4 Kg8 Kd3 h6 Ke2 h7 f2 Bxf2 Kxf2 h8=Q g1=Q+ and I'm no expert on queen endings but I *think* black is holding there. White can move the king somewhere besides g8 on their 3rd move, but it has to be on the g file (or you're a tempo slower to queen), so black will queen witch check, which is I think the important thing. Maybe I've miscalculated somewhere? In any case, probably not what you want to go for if you don't have any time to calculate that through. Love the series!

Thanks Josh. One thing I've never really understood is how many successive checks have to be made to claim perpetual? Can the claim be made the instant it becomes clear that the opponent's king can't escape the checks (in which case the draw claim could be made after the very first check)? Or was she claiming threefold repetition within the perpetual check sequence?

The number of checks is irrelevant. In order to claim a draw, the same position has to be reached three times (with the same side to move). Her claim was incorrect, but it took them quite awhile to establish that, and the intermission in play definitely affected how the rest of the game played out. Thanks for watching!
