A group of riders triggered a rather large and dangerous avalanche in upper Providence Canyon near Logan. Thanks owed to Jerrimy Brenchley for sharing his video...

Not a nice feeling to be chased by an avalanche. After getting away my legs were weak instantly fell after first step off the sled. It took me almost 10 minutes before I had a clear mind again. Stay safe! Wear Avy Packs.

Jeff Pierce ..EVERYONE riding in the back country needs BOTH. Most people in our group are at least level 1 certified and many of us level 2 working on 3. As soon as you are buried yourself or witness a friend die it becomes a reality. Please go do this before you have to go through that like some of us have. No, there is not a cure all, but I can promise when your buddy or family member gets buried and dies because you didn’t know how to find him correctly and quickly it will be much harder to deal with.

Happened to me once while skiing when I was a teenager, it cracked more than 100m above me on the steeper part and I managed to avoid it by going faster than I ever had and getting to a safe point, the avalanche missing me by no more than 2 seconds. Had my avy pack but was alone so it wouldn't have saved me. Had to sit for a few minutes before I was able to continue.

Gives me the chills. It’s absolutely impossible to explain unless you’ve been in one. The most unimaginable feeling of helplessness and panic I’ve ever had. I know stay calm and keep your head about you, but until you’ve experienced it, you have no idea. I’ve been lucky three times, but two of my friends have not been. Sure am glad to see a great outcome with this. Be safe out there fellow backcountry riders. It’s not something to chance or risk (but seems like we did for years looking back) ...the people who have been caught know exactly what I’m talking about. I won’t say he deserved it, because having experienced it, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone....but if he wasn’t wearing a helmet he’s a dip shit.

@@troybayliss46 Thanks Matty, it makes my adrenaline rush and the hair all over my body stand up just talking about it. You guys are right, I think he was wearing a helmet. Thanks for pointing that out. I was riding yesterday in high avalanche danger and watched several people get up into country they shouldn’t have been in. It’s not my place to tell anyone their business so that’s not my objective. My objective is to try and save someone from having to experience what I’ve experienced and a possible tragic situation. Long story short I rode up to them and asked if they had checked the avalanche report. They they were pretty rude actually and the know it all type. I said “let me show you a picture” and showed them a picture of a friends lifeless body being pulled out of a hole over 12 feet deep. They weren’t too rude after that and wanted to know everything they could about being safe in the backcountry. I spent an hour or so pointing out nearby areas and why they are dangerous. They had no idea and their attitude changed pretty fast once they realized how much danger they were actually in. Educate yourself I beg you. It’s not worth it and you can still have an awesome day on the mountain without putting yourself in these elevated danger areas. I do it 3 or 4 times a week so there are plenty of places to stay safe.

@@specforged5651 I'm glad those guys changed their attitude and they took the opportunity to learn from you, it's too bad you had to show them the picture for that to happen. I'm lucky I don't have a picture like yours but I do have some pictures of my buddies foot that got destroyed by a dirt bike because he wasn't wearing MX boots that I show to people I see riding without boots. I always try to learn things from the more experienced guys out there. I think if you pay attention and listen you can learn something from almost anyone you meet in life. I've never been in an avalanche, but from what little the man experienced, it seems like he is being dramatic...it barely touched him. Unless its the crash that he is in pain about.

It's ahame to bring and allow these stupid, polluting and noisy high pitched 2 strokes engine in a such beautiful and calm nature place.

@@12345fowler no but your just as noisy. Two stroke engines have come a long way and don’t pollute near as bad as they used to. I’d be more concerned with boat engines that dump their exhaust right into the water.

I rigged my sled to drop charges with the push of a button. I seek out sliding snow for thrills. There is NOTHING more exhilarating then having a Tsunami of snow nipping at the tracks.
