Thankful for this one, I might be wrong but haven't seen other videos exploring this feature. I have set up my UAD 737 to reduce lows on 30 & 150, and to expand highs on 8k, but I wanted to see how pros are seting up these two. Got the answers from this video, won a deesser as well. I am not removing the oxford supresser from the chain yet though. I wish you could do some more videos about tracking lead vocals with UAD echosystem, but it seems so impossible given your love for the studiorack and the Waves afiliation you have got.

I have a Rupert Neve portico II but i really love the sound of the Avalon so I'm thinking of switching to it. As someone who owns both, which do you like the most and which do you find yourself using the most?
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Год назад
They’re both amazing tools, really can’t go wrong with either. Portico ii is more versatile for tracking beyond vocals and you get more colors with silk. If you’re just tracking vocals though, 737 pre / EQ is unmatched imo, if the signature clean tube sound is what you’re looking for.

I take the 737 over a neve u can get that same saturation and distortion from the Avalon if u want to by pushing the preamp and back down the output , then u can get clean transparent warm vocals and I use the compressor as well many people don’t like the compressor but I do it’s a great tracking compressor

I’ve been looking to get more body and low end out of my vocals. I have the 737 as well as the TLM103. I have a Telefunken TF51 coming this week so I am excited to try similar settings like this to combo with it. Would you recommend me adding an Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor Compressor/Limiter? I heard it’s amazing
@SeanDivine

The 103 is very full in the low end. If you use the Bass EQ on the 737, that should be plenty!

The onboard preamps on the UFX are a bit thin and sterile, imo. They're nice, practical pre's... Avalon pre (especially coupled with the EQ) is in a different league sonically.

Been learning about LUFS and the proper loudness to get videos at. I watched some of your videos on loudness. I notice on stats for nerds on a few of your videos, this one in particular according to stats for nerds is at -7.9dbs. I noticed this with a few other RU-vid channels who have made videos covering the topic on getting youtube videos to sit at the recommended loudness level. They tell you about what would be a good volume to shoot for for youtube videos, but then you go and look and they're way under the recommended loudness. I've seen some channels where you can tell they it looks like they actually tried and their videos are sitting at around -1db or -2db under the recommended loudness or their 2 above... I'm wondering how many people are actually thinking about this before uploading videos lol Like, before every video you upload to youtube, are you measuring the loudness of your audio to see if you are hitting the recommended, and simply making an intentional decision to just upload the video even though you're audio is -7dbs below the recommended? I notice a few videos where your audio is way below the recommended, I'm assuming you're not paying attention or don't care really? Should anyone care? I think the lowest I've seen any of your videos since I started looking your channel and other people's channels was about -7.dbs! I find this interesting, please give me some insight on this as I'm still learning and I would like to know if it even matters then...
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Год назад
The majority of this video is spoken word, hence why the LUFS is lower than some of my other videos. For tutorial videos, I'm aiming for consistency across my channel. Obviously, some of my older videos will vary more but for the most part, my voice level stays relatively consistent. I don't care to heavily compress or level my vocals to hit the normalization standard or just to have it turned down. You may be misunderstanding the normalization and what it means for this type of tutorial video (not just delivering a song). The second percentage in stats for nerds tells you how much the audio for the video is being normalized. In this case, if you have the volume at 100%, the second percentage is 100% meaning it's NOT being adjusted because it's below the RU-vid standard LUFS for normalization. If audio is ABOVE the standard it would show for instance 2.0 db or 3.0db and that percentage would say 80% or 70%, meaning it's being turned down and played back at the standard. This is all intended to create consistency for viewers / listeners and that's what it does. It's not a standard for delivery.
@Deedrio
@Deedrio Год назад
@@SeanDivine Ahaaa! I see this makes sense! Thanks for your response! Any possibility us getting a video in the future from you regarding a good loudness level to shoot for for spoken word content? I’m considering starting a channel myself that will mostly be spoken word. Would be great to also learn about how loud background music should be under spoken word content.

I use both in different situations. Generally, I use the Neve comp for more aggressive vocal comp duties and the 737 comp very lightly on the way in during tracking (no more than 3-4 dB gain reduction).

It depends on the specific unit you get (if buying used). The 737 is generally very low noise floor. I've used some older units that need servicing and can produce hum and hiss if the tubes need replacement.

Sean, quick question. What’s the best Avalon alternative? I don’t have an Apollo anymore.
@SeanDivine

I'd say the Brainworx EQ AMEK200 is the closest to the EQ section I've heard. Manny EQ is nice too but it's a bit more edgy sounding. The preamp transients / comp (with the dynamic SC engaged) are quite unique in the Avalon.
