Avanti West Coast have started to refurbish their entire fixty-strong fleet of Class 390 Pendolino Trains. The first one is already in service, but I was invited up to the Alstom Depot in Widnes, Chesire to see the work in progress and one of the new units up close and learn about what's changed.
Avanti have more info on their website: www.avantiwest...
With thanks to Becky Kukla for her additional camerawork.

These trains are immense machines, flying up and down the WCML for twenty years. They STILL feel cool, they cover ground at an astonishing pace, and they have always felt like a proper long-distance train. Great to see them getting the update they deserve. Hopefully another twenty years of them to go.

Hopefully replaced and displaced to lesser duties (possibly exported) in the 5-10 year timeframe, great technology demonstrator, but a ‘mk2’ could polish out a number of design flaws which compromise it’s passenger comfort and bring about operational efficiencies. Chiefly the floor height to accommodate the tilt tech within the loading gauge, which goes on to limit window height and position. Greyrigg showed that the design is solid from a safety point of view but look at what could be possible using composite materials and learnings from aerospace in the past 30+ years since these were designed (less weight, bigger window openings). Of course none of this logic will win out, it never does in the U.K. so maybe we just be quiet and be grateful that they have (hopefully) fixed the constant poo smell…

I rode on a 390 last year and they where fine in terms of comfort. However, the upgrades look smart and the trains actually look like avanti trains now not rebadged virgin trains. Like the idea of the smart seat system.

Just last week did a Rugby - Carlisle return on Avanti, first time in ages. Trains were very tired and shabby, so great to see this refurb. I'd also forgotten how narrow, cramped and claustrophobic these Pendolino cabins are, but I can't imagine that will change.

The new interior reminds me a little bit of the Transpenine Express Nova 1 & Nova 2 with the blue seating. I expect that the new extendable trays on the back of seats with a power socket will be handy for people who are looking for that feature. @@TalesOfWar agreed and it's the same with buses. As someone who used to work in railways and now manages a bus/ coach depot, I can agree entirely with you. The cost per mile for rail or bus is eye watering compared to flying or shipping. Why? Rail is almost fully regulated commercially speaking- though open access rail operators are les regulated and so are cheaper. Despite what you might think, bus fares are distorted by government policy. Aviation and shipping on the other hand are, from a commercial point of view, entirely deregulated and UK offers some of the lowest £/mile anywhere in the World. NB no politics intended- both parties are as bad.

Looking forward to a trip on one these refurbished sets which, despite them being approx 20 years old, compare very well with the 800 series sets for passenger environment. Pleased to see that first class seats have not be changed to leather - ghastly change that was made to some HSTs and Mk4 vehicles. However, the seat reservation/monitoring gadget looks really interesting. The ability to reserve a seat easily may be a bonus for passengers but there are far too many reserved seats not taken up. This means that if you don't have a reservation, you need to walk along the coach and work out which seats most probably have not been occupied; this rather negates the green/orange/red light display which should guide you straight to an available seat.

This is the train that put me off long distance West Coast rail travel. I used to love taking the train to London, when they had the superb Mk 3 coaches - comfy low-height seats, plenty of legroom and large windows letting in plenty of light. Cue these Pendolinos and all of that changed overnight. The combination of cramped interiors, tiny windows (if you're lucky enough to have a window!) and sides that slope in to increase the already claustrophobic atmosphere, led to my first major panic attack on a packed Liverpool - London service. I have never used these trains since and, judging by this refurbishment which has done nothing to lessen the claustrophobic feel, I won't be using them now.

The windows are perfectly fine. Try being on an unrefurbished 350 or 323 if you're complaining about PENDOLINO seats.

Like the additional luggage space, but am I the only one that despairs when watching people pulling suitcases down the carriages even when they've just walked by on the way in a luggage rack thats completely empty, so wondering if it will actually get used.

5:53 I was literally doing exactly the same when I visited Universal studios years ago. Someone yelled, there is Lucille Ball! One of my lenses went flying when I turned around to look. It dinged up the filter threads, but otherwise was fine. Lesson learned. Put one lens away before installing another. I never got to see her.

Not really much of an upgrade if I'm honest. Replacing a few seat covers, adding some new seats and plug... Still looks like it was designed in the 90's.

Huge improvement, though an odd choice of color for the headrest. In general I did not like the Pendolino in its original configuration; these look like you can actually sleep on the train and move around and stow your luggage. One other point -- they seem to be going for the HST longevity record on these trains. This is a serious renovation for 20 years in.

The larger luggage stacks will make a big difference on the crowded holiday trips especially. Shame we don't get some form of USB-C to complement the USB-A. (I'd only hope for mobile phone power for USB-c, not "power my laptop 100W USB-c" to be clear!)

I just heard that Amtrak here in America will replace all of it's coaches from 1938 with coaches from 1958. In addition all trains will now be powered by the latest steam engines that were just discovered discarded in a man's backyard.

Good to see that the seats still look comfortable. There seems to be a tendency these days to provide harder, thinner seats upon refurbishment, in a lot of train designs, especially in standard class, or replace older trains with new trains which have more uncomfortable seats. I was also pleased to see that you resisted the temptation to take a hammer to that mug of tea Geoff. (I expect that you're still trying to live down making that "tea" video , where you destroyed about 5 or 6 of them!!)🤣🤣🤣

I'm still impressed about a lot of thoughts were put into the interior during the heydays of Virgin trains, be it East Coast, West Coast or Crosscountry that still look a lot more spacious than the brand new Hitachi trains after 20 years.

I don't travel on the WCML any more, however over on the MML, capacity for first class is at a premium and usually full on peak services. I'm concerned that Avanti are looking at reducing this but having the flex arrangement seems a better solution.

In the standfast (I think that is the posh word for the introductory text above) the fleet is described as 'fixty-strong'. I don't know whether this is an in-joke I don't understand or whether it is a typo and should read 'fifty' or 'sixty'. However, at 3m 03s, the answer seems to be 56.

It was only last year that they finally managed a London-Glasgow trip which beat a 1970s design. I suppose if you're deaf and can't hear the constant alarms and have no sense of smell, so you don't have the aroma l'eau de toilet, I can understand why you might like them.
