Avatar Live Action: A Gorgeous Dissapointment 

I think some people are misunderstanding me. I'm not hating on the show, I still found it enjoyable and LIKED the fact that it's not a shot for shot recreation of the original. However, I do have to point out it's flaws especially with the characters as this is a review and they were quite dissapointing to see. Despite that I still want another season since again, I found it enjoyable!

Is it perfect? nope. Is it better than the Shyamalan travesty? abso-freakin'-lutely!

This show is enjoyable but is just as a disappointment as I am to my father.

Most of the characters felt like the characters portrayed in the play by the ember island actors.

Making the characters more mature takes a lot the character development that they went through the original series. Many current and future arcs that would have involve their development would need some rework to be more enjoyable. Of course, the bending, the scenery, the environment, it looks very good. It really shows how the creators love the original series, but maybe keeping the characters more intact would have being better.

Personally I'm not a fan of the live action because they removed some of the crucial parts of the show and characters but that is also bc I had high expectations and if I put those aside I'd think it is ok but nothing that I'd personally watch again

i think aang was decently cast and the actor did a good job. Sokka could have been more goofy and unrefined. He's too mature

They should fix the characterization and tone and it will be a solid adaptation

This IP is so perfect that recreations will always become 'ember island players' for those that enjoyed 20 years ago. It's Apples to Oranges IMO. Obviously the show that included additional hours of screen time conveys a better message. That doesn't mean the recreation was bad, just that the original was more dense and satisfying. Abridged but worth watching is how I'd describe it.

Was very enjoyable, jumped around with the story to include elements from the animated series, 8 episodes translated acceptably, more time is always preferred, but overall they worked quite well, effects were top notch, does set the story up well for season 2... coolest scene in the series is... oh, you know... you know you know... completely unexpected and deviation from the animated series, but amazing, perfect inclusion... For the most part in the show, they get the bending right, maybe 70% of the time, the effects are great, but sometimes the actors movements are too slow for the movements of the elements to feel natural, some of those scenes could've been reshot, or even sped up before effects were added to improve these actions... Sokka needs a better writer, his goofy humour is a major component to his character, he's a little too serious, maybe this can be improved upon as well... Katara might be the biggest disappointment for one scene, one moment, "I am the master"... just, had to Mary Sue her like that, even if only a little, it was dumb, and made no sense that she was better than Zuko at that point, just because... needed one, mini scene, where she was training with Paku, with the assumption that a few weeks had passed, and it would've worked... don't empty girl boss her like that, it's cheap, not empowering... also, after they did bring in the women as well, which i thought was a cool inclusion, and, they could've done with a token scene that showed they were pretty decent as well... it's an empty moment without any screen time to show that it was worth it... couple of females among the dead at the end when they showed the few males would've actually led credence to them as respected warriors as well... Bumi, umm... just umm... great action, but that whole fight scene with Aang, was waiting for Bumi to come out with a revelation and give Aang some sage advice with a more whimsical tone, but he, like Sokka, was once again, a little too serious... People have said it, I'll say it, "cave of 2 lovers" and it's a brother and sister... they were obviously going for a kindred 'family love' but, wrong, wrong, wrong time to do it for anyone whose watched the animated series... Azula, Mei, and Ty Lee... please don't let me down, assuming future seasons are green lit... I don't like body shaming, but I can say one or more of them seems to have been missed cast, based on future scenes that will be required of them to fully portray the characters accurately, we shall see, maybe I'm wrong, but I do hope the actors have black belts or equivalents in respective disciplines, maybe a love of gymnastics or something... and I also never once saw Ty Lee walking on her hands, disappointing, just one hand stand, or maybe I missed it...

I’d honestly give it a 5/10 personally, as an adaptation it’s not terrible and they did some interesting things to make it different than the show, and most weren’t bad at all. My issue is the 2D characters (gran gran is angry at aang, and that’s the character, doesn’t really make you feel understand why she’s angry, it just makes it known that people are angry). And like you said, a lot of the characters are just husks and honestly I think that’s due to the direction not the actor. One last thing: exposition dumps and the characters just saying how they’re feeling each scene literally took away the scenes that were really good for me personally. Anyways good video!

Did you just forget how they butchered Ruku character for Kyoshi? I dont mind Kyoshi's part, in fact I think it was one of the best scenes in the show but apparently Ruku is a jester now. The Avatar who was most close to Aang, who taught him everything about the war and being the avatar, who explained to him what the Avatar State actually is, is just now a comedian.

I completly understand, but still disagree. Non of the con-arguments made the show a dissapointment. I sadly never watched the original, but compared to other adaptations of the show, it is the far best in visual, character development (specially because of a shorter format than the original). Te titel of the video make it sounds it just had a good CGI but the show itself was bad, but not at all. Most of us is watching anything Avatar related for the fist time, or have only watched previus poor adaptations, so yes, this show is awsome in a different way, for a different public and with a different way of telling and that is far from a dissapointment.

i dont understand the major hate towards this show.... Like its actually decent. I am hoping for a season 2 to see how much they grow and improve.

bending and action in this live action series doesn’t have depth to it, I suggest you watch the original series first before watching this live action. watch closely when the fight in the animation series.

Did people really expected to be a word for word remake? It’s an adaption. Major changes were bound to happen as they try to transition elements from the cartoon to live action. Not to mention 20 episodes merged into 8 for book 1. Let’s be realistic. It was a decent adaption considering the fact how the majority of the show NEEDS cgi.

The 'mature' things are, basically, two: deaths on screen and less funny things. The dialogues, on the other hand, are absolutely sillier, cringer, and less mature. Plus, they absolutely RUINED Katara's arc. They made her a flat and boring character. And Suki being only a horny isolated girl, is insulting.

Actor for Aang gets 0 out of 10

ATLA was a rare case where all the filler episodes actually made the story so incredible. A lot of the character development happened in the fillers. To cut it out has always and will always create cheapened and rushed results

Im just gonna say this, SAying that you cant really be mad at their acting because they are kids isn't a good defense, like Harry potter first movie everyone was 12 and they did a better job. And The actor playing katara is 17, wouldn't really say her being young is an excuse especially when you compare it to Aang who is a 12 year old.

It's a solid 6 or a weak 7 for me, but I will fight anyone who says it's horrible, because I can feel everyone involved in the show is a true fan pouring their love and attention into the project. It's just that you needed several miracles to make a great live adaptation of the show to begin with. My main problem is the writers were too conscious about "new audience" and "old fans". There are too many lines that were inserted separately for those distinct perceived demographics, and the writing felt very inorganic as a result. But the costuming, the sets, the music, the actions are all great, and the casting is about as good as you can get with this many child/young actors involved. One thing I don't like in all these reviews is people picking out minor differences from the cartoon and say "the original did it better". The cartoon was a masterpiece. Most shows are worse in comparison. Let's enjoy this for what it is.
