This episode received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the United States in the category "Outstanding Children's Programming", which the HSUS Genesis Award press release described as a mythical tale about animals held captive for human entertainment that resonates with the way animals are used in circuses today".
You know the tale of iroh was never sad for me iroh is my favourite character but since i don’t know who his son is it just feels like he is crying over his goldfish.
Prince Charming’s Biggest Fan But the fact Iroh is so heartbroken and we know he’s usually a cheerful, happy, and opportunistic man really just hits you with the feeling that this is a very important part of his life and that is sons death was a monumental part of his current mindset
did you know this episode won a genesis award for an accurate depiction of animal cruelty? man this episode is hands down one of the saddest episode in the series :/
well aren't you just a ball of sunshine? when i commented this, i didn't scroll through the other comments yet. i was just sharing something i thought was cool and i'm glad to know someone else commented it and thought it was cool too.
chabosmulm ikr i remember when i was little i cried the first time watching this episode especially after he went back to the sunk library, even now I'm 15 and i still shed a tear after watching it
Some "easter eggs" to notice in this episode 2:49 When they ransack Appa's saddle, one of the sandbenders opens an umbrella. That's the umbrella that the Gaang got in the episode "The Fortuneteller" 3:13 "We need the shirshu spit darts!" The shirshu was the creature that the bounty hunter named June had (from episode 15 "Bato of the Water Tribe), as you should remember, it's saliva contains paralyzing agents. 3:45 this is the same circus that Ty Lee was from. The guy at 5:02 is the guy that Azula was talking to when she was sabotaging Ty Lee's show. 13:07 When Appa is flying into Ba Sing Se, you can see the cats from the previous episode that led Momo to the footprint. (Although, you cut them from this video) I make videos about Avatar, if anyone is interested.
The dance of Tui & La the way I see it it's that she made herself blind... After all she was aware of all the cruelty of the fire nation and she just flew with the circus, she was aware of azulas cruelty and she stayed....
This episode really affected me as a child. Till now I seriously can't enjoy zoos or any place that has animals in cages or held in captivity. Also, ptsd is horrible. Abuse at this extent is something I wouldn't wish on anyone or any animal. Abuse isn't just "a little pain".
Appa _does_ have a voice actor: friggin' Dee Bradley Baker, who also voices Momo and other critters in this and many other shows... but who you might know better as the voice of the Clone Troopers in Star Wars: The Clone Wars...
This is the saddest episode of all in my opinion, even way more sad than the Iroh scene last episode. Just the whole build up with Appa missing for already so many episodes and then dedicate one *full episode* of feeling worse and worse for Appa. When I first watched it my eyes became very watery and I had to fight to not just start crying. EDIT: Same happened when watching this reaction.
@★ Froggie Animation ★ In my opinion people hype up the sadness of the Iroh scene way too much. Yes, it's sad, but it's only for a few moments, and then we're on to Aang making zoos and Sokka doing haiku. Appa's Lost Days is an entire episode of feeling bad for Appa, and the empathy buildup is massive, seeing him fly all around alone, searching for food, missing Aang, makes me feel like garbage for him just by typing about it right now.
I just thought of something. The first time he chews on the bars it's because he's teething... probably cutting his adult teeth. It could because besides hunger and sense of comfort, he's probably cutting his 'wisdom' teeth... showing that Appa is reaching full maturity.
"He's been pampered for a minute man, so he needs to live on the rugged side for a second, dude. A little pain will go a long way. I believe it. A little pain will go a long way. He's gonna overcome this and become stronger." ...what. I understand broadly where you're coming from, but no. This wasn't a person struggling against their limits in pursuit of a goal. As Guru Pathik said, "fear has moved in where trust should be." Appa didn't become stronger from this, and if he did it would still have been at the expense of trust; the Kyoshi Warriors and Pathik had to work hard to undo the damage from the pain and cruelty.
I don't necessarily dislike Nahid, but I swear he says some of the absolute stupidest shit I've ever heard. In this video, Nahid deadass said that Appa being abused was gonna make him stronger and that he's "been pampered" up until now, when we've literally seen Appa flying across the world and fighting alongside the others since the beginning. Abuse is not like a necessary thing to "overcome" that will make you stronger, especially not animal abuse. That's not how animals work. Nahid has the dumbest opinions of the group, by far. I know you commented 2 years ago, but I still wanted to respond because Nahid's comment pissed me off and I was looking for a comment that mentioned this lol
Whatchu mean Appa’s been “pampered”?? He almost drowned to death, he was frozen under the ocean for a century, he’s been chased by hunters who wanted to EAT him, he was trapped underground, he’s had to fly through literal war zones, and fly through days straight through exhaustion. Pampered my ass.
I'm surprised you guys thought that Guru Pathik was the first indian/south asian character on the show and didn't catch that Bhumi is an Indian term. It literally means earth :P I always found it funny because his name literally means "King earth"! Anyways I love your reactions, have great Ba-sing-day! :D
This episode won a Humane Society award for its portrayal of the mistreatment of animals. At least poor Appa's faith lead to more awareness of mistreament of animals.
UrineTrouble05 the fact it was cut makes a stronger case for them. The cats were cut, so they want to know if the people noticed them at all. There would be less reason to post this comment if the cats were in the video.
I always thought Bumi was Indian. I feel like South Asians would definitely be more prominent in the Earth Kingdoms (considering they are probably the most diverse nation) and the Air Temples (since they also take great inspiration from Hinduism) so I would have loved to seen that aspect more explored but the show is great anyways! I love this episode and I love this reaction! I had recently received some bad news in my family and was feeling down but this video cheered me up! :) I can't wait for you to upload the next one considering it is probably one of my favorite episodes in season 2!
kay sal I always thought of them as Arabs because they live in the dessert and most of them have bushy beards and most Asians have straight beards. And I don't know why but the earth benders from the army look like them the most that's why I thought that. I guess everyone sees them differently. This is how I see them all: water benders are eskimos/Siberians, firebenders are Japanese, airbenders are Chinese and earth benders are Arabic. Also you could see earth benders as Mongolian but yeah they don't really look like Mongolians.
Earth Kingdom architecture, clothing, etc draws inspiration from Qing and Han dynasty China. However, ethnically there's a lot of variation, so Earth Kingdom people are probably a melting pot of Chinese, Chinese ethnic minorities, and maybe some South Asian. I think the Sandbenders seem like they're Arabic or North African in style? They are earth benders too so they would be included as well.
If you guys are having exporting trouble, make sure you do a VBR 2 pass. Also, rendering your sequence in and out before exporting helps. This ensures that you won't have weird problems or unexpected issues after exporting.
Going to sequence and rendering would allow the program to have basically downloaded he files into its cache or memory, making it easier to edit or export.
The pain I had to go through as a child to know what happened with Appa for a long time and finally seeing this broke my heart. Always makes me cry ATLA
When Appa's being tortured into obedience, I see the reasonably pained expressions on their faces, but I personally go for the trying to reach through my screen to comfort Appa while in tears method. This episode is the most gut-wrenching one period
As an animal lover, it hurt me to see Appa in so much pain. Here they just went above and beyond just simple animal abuse with Appa’s torment and it quickly becomes hard to watch. This is no joke one of the darkest, saddest, and most agonizing torture sequences I’ve ever seen in any piece of media. Dead fricking serious!
Did you notice that guru saying he had a vision of avatar reaching the eastern air temple and do you remember avatar stormed out of the air temple when he heard that he had to leave to the eastern air table before he froze . so guru was waiting in the eastern air temple for hundered years or some..omg
I remember watching the show fully once when I was 12. I got that this episode was sad but I didn't think anything of it. I rewatched the series a few weeks ago. I'm now 18. And This episode made me bawl. I cried my eyes out. Shit is just sad man, the amount of pain appa goes through, just one bad thing after another. Heart breaking
Yessir, it's the core of all bending in the end, and he was aware of it. I always had a theory that fire benders were closer to energy bending then any other bending style because they directly convert chi to energy. I bet Iroh or old Zuko could have learned it
Actually no. It was stated that only the Avatar can energybend if granted the ability. I think Pathik did what Aang did in the swamp to locate Appa. Only difference is that Pathik being very spiritual was able to find Aang (Appa and Aang had same/mixed spiritual energy. So Pathik sensed Appa's energy and then looked for another source of that energy i.e. Aang. He tracked the source of energy in the world, but didn't bent/manipulate it). Aang, in Swamp required a heavy spiritual place (the swamp tree and its connections) to find Appa.
@@OlPalJoe Energybending is bending pure energy (Chi, Spiritual energy etc). Firebending, like other arts, includes chi only acting with environment, only difference being in other cases, chi controls earth/water/air but in case of Fire it ignites the air to create fire.
@@rohhaiil I understand that chi goes into the use of all bending. My point is that because a fire bender has to use pure chi to create their element as opposed to controlling an element outside, that they would be more acclimated to direct uses of energy/chi. Especially lightning users and redirecters who are used to controlling and channeling vast amounts of energy. Also, from a purely out of lore, long time fan of the series perspective-fire needs a new skill. Lightning and combustion aren't bad, but the other elements (especially water) have so many more applications and variants than fire. I thought that this would be a nice thing to give to them in a new series. And it would be kind of poetic that the move that ended the oppressive Ozai way of being a bender would become accepted among the fire nation. Just my thoughts!
1:35 "That's a menacing voice actor" So uhhhhhh for people who didn't know, Long Feng is voiced by Clancy Brown who also voices Mr. Krabs. I learned that fact a while ago and now it is 100% impossible for me to take Long Feng seriously. (You really notice that its the same dude in the scene where he gets arrested like two or so episodes after this one)
The look in Appa's eyes at 5:50 is so devastating. He's free but he's never been alone like this before. He's terrified with no clue on how to find Aang. This episode kills me.
"Pampered" - has been in an ice for a hundred years, survived more than hundreds of fireballs mid air, mind set that his friend & owner is dead/trapped under a sand, and more.
My favorite episode in the entire series. Gets me worked up every single time. And I've watched the series at least 10 times. this episode is a work of art
a watched the episode a couple of times but this is the first time i noticed the fact that the kid that reminds Appa of Aang has the same voice actor as Aang. that's smart! they don't only look the same - they sound the same as well! cool!
I find this episode hard to watch. I think I've only seen it all the way through once or twice...seeing animals suffer (even cartoon ones) is just so effing sad... Poor Appa.
When you think about it, that kid probably saw Appa's situation as his own, since his father's attitude towards him probably went a lot deeper than what a kid show could've shown.
This episode was so hard to watch for me when I first starting watching this series, I had loved Appa from the beginning and when I first watched this episode I had to literally restrain myself from crying because my parents were nearby:(
