Look at that. Firebenders can actually create fire out of nothing this time, and it doesn’t take a whole troop of earthbenders to move one rock. THAT is how bending is done.

i agree, from what i saw so far, i think he is the best in the show for me and in his portrayal. I have seen some videos and i think that Katara's actress even though she seems amazing she does not perform well some of her lines or maybe its a mistake of the director? I dont know. I will wait and see to be fair

Well let me tell you something. He and Iroh just ate this show. Both made an excellent job and it’s by far the best relationship in the series. I’ll even go (and with big risk) a little bit beyond and say it’s slightly better that the OG series, here you can see more in depth of their relationship and Zuko it’s more aware of his feelings towards his uncle.

@AzureDx Not everything will be perfect because the OG will always be the OG. But he's still the highlight of the show for me. But yes. I do agree the overall writing needs to be better. Hopefully, they improve upon that for season 2 if it gets a go.

Every fine detail from the original captured. Zuko's chain breaking kick, Iroh using the chain to swing someone, also him just being lowkey chill about the kidnapping

Firebending is awesome. Earthbending may need a little work, but it's serviceable. Iroh sounds intimidating. More so than Ozai.

Considering earthbending must be the hardest to bring to live-action and still this clip shows it as being decent, I think we don't have much to worry about the bending in this live-action.

The only people over there knowing their shit, when it comes to Kung Fu in Movies are ones working in Hong Kong Productions and a few mainland ones.

@@mshahzaib247 That's an overstatement. Dallas Liu, the actor who plays Zuko needs to work on his flexibility and I'd recommend that he starts martial arts training because his movements are pretty stiff. Zuko is supposed to be a well-trained martial artist, but he looks like a beginner here.

I disagree. This are just flames, not magma or burning oil. It doesn't stick and the energy evaporates instantly. Yes, it hurts, but it doesn't cook you in a instant. The heat has to flow through your skin and flesh, which is why it still will take time, before something happens. Did you never experienced campfires? Even if you put something directly into the flame, it will take some time before it creates a effect (burns). Warriors with protective gear should easily sustain bursts of fire. They even counter by putting their helmet first, to prevent direct hits on their skin/head.

I agree, doesn't feel 'snappy' like it was before. Look at OG Toph, sometimes her movements were smooth and steady, and sometimes she'd SNAP things into place depending on need.

I wish they added the stomp in the Earthbender's choreo though. In the og; it always seemed like they're lifting/pulling the chunk of rock/boulder from the ground by putting a sort of impact to the ground first- either by stomping, or by jumping, or maybe a lower digging motion (to emphasize the "digging" part). Signifying the separation of the chunk they're trying to pull from the Earth as a projectile before the punch. But that's just me nitpicking... everything looks well executed!

Hung Gar doesn't incorporate "stomps" though. It was likely picked as the inspiration for Earth-bending because it's an art that emphasizes strong, wide stances with strong hand stances. The "stomps" as a liberty is fine, as I'm sure there are moves performed by all the bending styles that aren't a part of the actual martial arts they are inspired by.

Earth bending movements felt sluggish, the rocks didnt really feel like they're moving with the benders, more so they input commands like a video game and then the rock does the action instead of syncing with the movements. Fire bending looks amazing tho.

Gotta say they did a pretty good job. Regarding the complaints about the earth bending speed; 1. It's realistic enough for a live action giving consideration into the laws of physics 2. Toph made a statement in the animation that earth is a stubborn element when she was training Aang 3. Bumi used an immense amount of strength to lift the boulder in his fight with Aang in the animated series. So y'all shouldn't expect them to move boulders like pebbles in the live action as shown in the animated series. Let's just appreciate good entertainment.

I also don't understand the complaints about the earthbending. It's pretty decent considering how hard must be to bring the bending of a stuborn element to life in a live-action. Not to mention we just saw foot soliders (not master-level) fighting against two powerful firebenders, one being the Dragon of the West and former general of the Fire Nation army.

Spot on. People wanna tie earthbending to the powerful rapid stomps and bangs from the series, including the sounds. I think having it "grounded" in reality gives the bending more depth in its technique and opens up the skillset further. Not everyone can just stomp a boulder airborne, and that's a good thing.

I think people need to remember that those Earth nation soldiers have likely never faced a Fire-bender. Earth-bending is slow. Someone exceptionally gifted like Toph or Bumi may be able to manipulate Earth more easily, and thus quickly. But again, if Earth-benders have never faced a Fire-bender, they're aren't going to react quickly enough to counter or strong enough to withstand the Dragon of the West.

the bending looks dope. fire bending especially. I think the problem with the earth bending is not the cgi or editting, it has to do with the characters, earth is has a firm stance, earth is rigorous and strong and i think the actors need to display that, because in this clip they didn't look like they had a firm stance on the ground. but i still love the clip

I'd say it's still slow for the size of rock they're throwing. I could grab that rock and throw it faster than they are bending it and I'm just an average Joe. Either make the rock bigger, or make the bending faster, let's not make excuses. Still leagues above the movie that shall not be named tho

In the animated series, the more weight the earth you lift has, the slower it is, just like Bumi in the fight with Aang, or when he lifts the statue of Ozai from Omashu, that even requires more earthbenders, but Bumi is a great teacher, so that's why he could only

Fight should've been choreographed better. Earth is strong and defensive, they shouldve have focus more on that like Toph instead of chucking random block of stones. Lets hope it get better.

The bending looks pretty good, but there seems to be some delay, making it feel unnatural, almost like their movements aren’t directly affecting the things they’re bending. I wish it was just a little more snappy to feel like it does in the original show. All in all though, looks pretty good, kind of excited but mostly skeptical to see if they did it justice this time around.

Earthbending doesn't look that bad bad. I hope they improve it for the next season. You should be able to feel the intensity of earthbending that's one of the reason why i love earthbending. Might also include stomping first to detach a rock out of the ground. Physics is not the reason why they haven't pull off the intensity since the whole show is entirely fiction.

I am LOVING THIS way more than I expected. I'll have to get used to all the shaky camera-ness and the slow-motion.. But all in all that was pretty badass.. Also I don't think we have seen any scene yet where Iroh is genuinely heartwarming and funny. Let's hope that they can keep that in! He is my favorite character in the show by far I believe, and I love them all

With Paul playing Iroh, we will get the funny and warm. We just haven’t seen it in the trailers. But if you’ve seen him on Kim’s Convenience or Ahsoka, you know he can do Iroh’s humor.

While I do think earthbendung looks the wonkiest, that's not surprising since it's the bending that's least used this season. Everything else looks and feels fantastic, and I'm sure there'll have plenty of time to work out any kinks for when Season 2 gives us more earthbending. Looking good so far! I'm excited!

I’m so excited it looks amazing. On the one hand sad there’s no “you’re clearly outmatched” line…but on the other that new line “we’ve all seen enough death” is so perfect for Iroh. I feel like that’s what he would have said in the OG if they hadn’t had to pretend that no one died for the sake of the kids rating.

I think the main reason why earth bending sticks out the most from the other 3 is that unlick water, fire, and air bending rock bending is manifested more through solid and heavy movements while the oehter 3 are more fluid and flowy movements. Rock bending just doesnt translate as well in live action but it still looks amazing and miles better than the avatar movie. This looks so Promising

I don't understand people complaining about the bending. It cannot be same as animation, it is not the best but it is not awful either. Gosh everyone is a critic. Quite frankly it looks so much like anime and so well executed. Loved Dallas's kicks. It looks so smooth and well done. I am so excited to watch it 😭😭

I am a hardcore fan too but I always see live action with open mind. I don't mind changes unless it completely destroys or derails the story. It is impossible to have every thing from a book or anime in show, and it is annoying, when people do not understand that.

The firebending is awesome! I can see the criticism in the clothing of the guards staying clean, I hope it's not always like that. As for the earthbending, I actually like that it. It feels like that are fighting with gravity and weight. It looks more realistic that way.

Because it's harder for things that are funny in an animated cartoon to translate to live action. The cartoon, as much as I love it, is a little too cheesy, but the fact it's animated makes me tolerate it. No way I could in a live action. It would be forced. So im super excited for a more serious tone.

One thing about attention to details for me is that they forgot to somewhat put burnt or flame effects on the soldiers after they/he got burst by iroh. (I understand it's an armour but still, give an after effects texture to it & will be good) Details are really important when it comes to fighting scenes like this: dust, dirt, burnt, sweat, wet, blown. Or else it will look tacky when they're still clean after a battle

If they expect something very accurate to the cartoon go watch the cartoon, but in my opinion this made a lot of justice to the source material. Specially Iroh and Zuko, both feeling like the most real family bond ever.

I'd give this scene a 7/10. Setting is decent, nothing to complain about. The armor and costumes work really well with the original series, and all the voice actors are wonderfully voiced. However, the choreography seems still a little blocky. None of the earth nation soldiers really did anything until AFTER Zuko freed his uncle, and their movements are still slow and uncreative. I love the fire bending, it's ferocious and you can see why it's a feared bending to face. Also, did Iroh just burn a man alive? It cuts and makes it out like it didn't but I know I'm not the only one ...

I think that's a fair take. I thought the earthbending looked all right, given its always been shown to use patient and conservative movements (with the more flashy stuff coming from crazy mfers like Toff and Bumi). I agree with someone I saw above though who said Zuko's movements looked a bit too stiff. It didn't look bad, for a minor fight, but I'm hoping the actual martial arts part of the choreography is better in the bigger scenes later on.

Yeag but tbh, theseguys are extras or at best stunt actors. They are not meant to stick around longer than this scene. Would they really create like idk 10 costumes for each guy depending on the degree of burn? That's a detail and spending a shit ton of money for like a 1min17 apparition. I hope/think it won't be the same for the main cast's costumes. And maybe the Earth Kingdom has developped some super advanced fireproof fabric 👀

Like, you can tell the production team put a lot of work into the costumes, but it’s like no one at any point said, “hey, these people have been traveling the wild for months, maybe their clothes shouldn’t look like freshly ironed curtains…”

I do wish theyd get rid of the slow motion since it does just make the bending seem a little sluggish, but overall it looks really good. Bending will always be slower in live action compared to animation (but again hopefully they dont slo mo too much).

The dynamics of iroh and zuko in the live-action... works better than the animation. Its just more wholesome. Spoiler: Iroh lost his son, only to gain one from zuko. Its like the father he had wasn't fit to be his father, so he got the father he deserved via Iroh. Very touching if you know the whole story.... good stuff Netflix.
