One of the things that I appreciated about The Way of Water is the way that it gets you genuinely invested in the lives of Jake and Netytiri and their kids. Like, yes, it’s a big sci-fi war epic, but it’s also an intimate character and family drama at the same time. As bizarre as the concept of Sigourney Weaver playing an alien teenager was when they first revealed details about her character, I actually think the way they handled Kiri was actually really interesting. She ended up being my favorite new character in the movie, and I’m fascinated to see where her story arc goes in the sequels

With the whole “They’re doing this because of me,” thing, I think it was Cameron trying to subvert the white savior trope of the first by showing the negative effect associated to Jake Sally, but yeah I hope he goes through some sonder and gets more outside himself throughout this new trilogy. He’s a marine, so it’s gonna take a while.

Yeah. I mean cognitive backups would make complete sense given the ability to make avatars work. And from a military perspective your absolutely want to preserve experienced to tier assets like that. I know critics will plan it as lady but one of the things that I like about Cameron is that he's not afraid to do the logical thing technologically/logically and make it work. Chris Gore panned the logic in this movie but honestly his understanding of how engineering and physics works makes it so hard to take that kind of comment seriously.

For me it felt as forced as the "palpatine returning" thing. The bad guy from avatar isn't dead because he sent a copy of his mind to the earth during the events of the first film, but that isn't shown in the first film? Lame. Obviously Palpatine returning "for some reason" is lamer, but he could very well have send a copy of his mind too to the unknown regions during the events of Return of the Jedi

I think we weren't shown the same movie. I'd give it a 7, and with the action sequences carrying most of the weight of that mark. The nature part was beautiful and all of that but also reeeally slow, which brought pacing issues to the film. Personally 1 hour into the movie I looked at my phone to see how much time there was left. Gladly it gets better and the last hour is great, but I shouldn't have to wonder what time is it during a great movie. As you said, it felt like a documentary. But I don't consider that a good thing in an action-adventure movie

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to see this comment. To me, many choices were too much convenient just for the sake of the plot, even in action scenes, a lot of things didn't make sense at all except for "we need this thing to be happening reaaally bad". The one thing I carry out of this movie is the mesmerising effects, which makes me really hopeful for some stellar adaptations of fantasy and sci-fi books and other originals, but not much more.

I absolutely adored the 3 hour sci-fi nature documentary. I'm so glad to have a film go "look at this cool and unique world we made now let's sit and enjoy it for a bit." I want to see it again in theatre just to spend more time looking at the scenery details. Scorsby getting his arm lopped off was wonderful. I love a "good vs evil" style story where the Bad Guys are just unequivocally Bad. No "but try to see it from their perspective" just "look at these assholes!" and then when they get smoked it's like hell yeaaaah! I'm glad we didn't see the marine biologist die. He seemed like he was one of those "went along with it because I love to learn and then realized later how messed up this is and now drinks to cope with the guilt" kind of characters & is now trapped in it all since... planet far away and they can just boot you out the door so you die if you decide to quit tbh. I think Quaritch being a clone with implanted memories raises some ethical questions regarding consciousness and cloning (If you clone someone who died, can you hold them accountable for their original's crime?) that could be addressed in the next film. The kids were all adorable and I love how many times they said "bro" it was wonderful. I'm stoked to watch it again.

i really enjoyed this film, especially the VFX, fight choreography, world building, time spent in the natural world of the planet. but, I had a lot of problems with the writing / plot / motivations of the characters. I felt like many events happened because the plot needed to move ahead in a certain way, not because the characters would really do those things. In no particular order: • the middle son continually getting into life-threatening trouble at pretty much every opportunity, during a time of heightened risk. it reminded me of the child in The Mummy 2 where the 2 parents were SO in love and claimed to love their child, yet the child gets into life threatening danger, kidnapping situations, etc like 4x all in 1 week. and every time they save the child, they don't even reconnect with him that much and seem to forget he is in the same room and leave him unsupervised again, then immediately gets into the next dangerous situation right from under their unaware noses. the poor parenting and lack of supervision is off the rails. this movie gave me the same vibe. the parents keep imparting responsibility for THEIR SON onto the oldest brother, who is not the parent. and then they are surprised when, not once, not twice, not 3x, but multiple times! the oldest son cannot control or protect the middle son. at a certain point, Jake & Neytiri should have had an actual conversation with their son to explain the dangers of the situation, the need for caution, what to do, etc. Also, despite Jake creating a loving family over the years, his authoritarian parenting style is not effective. you can't treat your children like soldiers under your commands and demanding blind obedience of your children WHILE not respecting them, listening to them, or making an effort to actually understand them, is not the way to go. which perhaps was the very point of that dynamic, but for once I would like for a film to show the audience WHAT TO DO, instead of the tired, ineffective approach of what NOT TO DO. • the military commander running the whole operation: she had no problem torturing Spider, a child? • why did the military give the Colonel Miles guy, who is clearly a total sociopath, seemingly limitless access to all these resources and permission to commit what I think are war crimes(?) by threatening to kill or maim innocent women, children, civilians -- all for just..... revenge? against Jake? like, it just boils down to the Colonel's after-death continued personal vendetta against Jake, and he gets a whole security force of equally black-and-white, mustache-twistingly evil military people who seem equally excited to commit war crimes? • I felt it was ridiculous how they created the Neytiri/Spider conflict at the end. Neytiri could've easily snuck up behind the Colonel and slit his throat just as easily as she grabbed Spider. why would she threaten Spider, who was like a son to her? he had clearly been kidnapped and manipulated and tortured by the military. would she, his adoptive mother, not want to protect him? and it also felt cheap how all of a sudden Spider seemed scared of Neytiri's rage after her eldest son had been murdered. like, YEAH... I was would be murderously enraged too. she was 100% justified in that situation. it just seemed like a cheap move that was motivated by the need to create more tension in the scene, but not something that Neytiri, a loving mother figure toward Spider, right after he was rescued, would do to him. • Spider rescuing his father: WWWWHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY!!!! he already has a loving adoptive family who actually cares deeply for his well being and happiness. his father proven time after time to be an outright killing machine sociopath just out for revenge. in what world would Spider feel any sense of connection or a desire to protect or save this evil man, who just committed a laundry list of evil things earlier that hour / day / week. like, the Colonel HAD his second chance in the form of coming back as an avatar after dying. he does not deserve a 3rd chance on any fucking level. I just really hate that trope of people being given second chances in movies and stories when they literally display 0 redeeming qualities. a longing look in his eye toward is son, on occasion, is not enough. again -- it felt like a decision that Spider wouldn't have actually made, but it happened for the sake of perpetuating conflict and setting up the next movie.

I am surprised you liked it as much as you did. I felt like the movie was bloated and didn't deserve its run time honestly. It felt more like a journey of self discovery for the younger brother, with the adopted sister mirroring this in some way, but there were so many intrusive elements that just didn't really add to it. Jake and Neytiri should not have been in this movie, or at least had much less focus and supported the younger characters, instead of randomly becoming focal points in the last act. The bad dude was boring to me. Why does becoming an avatar not impact his world view at all? Also, didn't the humans just win when Jake left for the water tribe? Like, bam, conflict over, the Navi raids on trains will have poorer leadership. They have more Avatars who can find the Navi camp in the mountains as well, surely they can utilize that advantage to win their conflict? The human aspect meshed poorly with the Sullys integration plot. On top of that, the movie pushes an agenda of seeking peace for a lot of the movie, only to have it completely upended when the whale goes "fuck it, I'm going sicko mode" and then suddenly war is the correct choice? We can see that their method of peace wasn't working, but they don't explore any other alternatives, and the 180 gave me whiplash. If the movie didn't end on a positive note then I would feel like they acknowledge it's not perfect, but as it is, it just feels like the movie saying "fuck it, peace is boring and doesn't work, lets kill all human scum". In general, the movie just felt like it was trying to be very, very safe. It feels like they went down the checkbox of hollywood focus tested success without caring how it impacted the rest of the film. Nostalgia bait with old characters, check, cool action scene at the end, check, quips, check. Beyond that, it only really uses character archetypes and story tropes we've seen before, without adding much originality. You can see the creative passion in the worldbuilding and visuals, but it just does not transfer to the story or characters, so despite the lively world, it feels soulless to me.

As someone who wasn't really all that impressed by the first Avatar, I wonder if this movie would appeal to me. I didn't hate the first one, but I didn't understand all the hype for it, personally. It had good visuals and decent action, but I thought the characters and story left a lot to be desired. It was probably a decent 6/10 for me. Hearing such high praise for the sequel makes me wonder if it'll appeal more to me as someone who didn't enjoy the first one as much as a lot of other people.

As someone who's seen the movie, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I don't think you would. I think of Avatar 2 as being more of the same as the first movie. Lot of focus on the world itself, and lots of scenes where the characters are just vibing with the animals and the nature around them and not much plot happening. I personally didn't mind, since I went to see it for the pretty visuals and being immersed in the world rather than the plot. I think for people who come for the story, the middle will feel very very slow and like pointless padding -- this is where most of the "vibing with nature" scenes happen. The plot itself isn't anything amazing. Could be better. There's a lot of things in there which feel like plot conveniences/contrivances to me, but again, I don't mind since I didn't go to see it expecting an amazing story. Tldr: Avatar 2 is more of the same as the first one. If you liked the first Avatar, you'll like this one, but the opposite is probably also true. Plot is okay-ish, but the spectacular visuals is why you'd go watch it.

avatar the last waterbender is retconning the first avatar or its kinda forgetful -the humans have spaceships that can destroy huge swaths of forests they shouldve just done that to the big tree or the goddess tree in part 1 -in part 1 everything glows in dark, in part 2 they kind of forgot about that, imagine if they had made everything glow in the dark underwater complete with an underwater giant moonpearl or something -in part 1 jake goes all over the world to gather the tribes to war, in part 2 a water tribe appears out of thin air, maybe they cut out the explanation for that -humans are already immortal since they can upload conciousness, the 2nd movie goes deeper saying the commander saved his conciousness that makes him unkillable

I thiught it had lazy plot and very little character development. The world was deep and beautiful but the beliefs of the water people and their way of life was frankly quite basic and uninteresting. There are so many things they set up and DON'T GET RESOLVED (IN A 3h MOVIE!!!) like Kina's communion, or Payakan being an outcast, or the queen not liking the family...

Interesting take. I personally wasn't a fan. I felt it was far too long for how straightforward the plot was, and for how much of the plot was retreads of the original movie. Spiders arc was also a problem because his conflict of interest at the end just didn't make any sense to me. Sure that's his "dad", but he had no connection or relationship with him and was clearly much closer to the N'avi. I saw it in 3D IMAX too because it felt like the correct way to see it, but for some reason scenes of the movie vary in frame rate and it was jarring every time it happened and took me out of the experience, which felt like a real shame since visual spectacle is kind of the point of this movie. It felt like when the framerate drops in a video game, incredibly distracting and I'm surprised more people didn't have an issue with this choice, at first I thought there was something wrong with the projector. I walk out of it feeling a little burned (hah) and the friend I went with, who was generally a bit more positive on the movie, was also disappointed. I definitely have no interest in giving my money to James Cameron for part 3 and I'll be curious to see if it does as well.

I thought it was a beautiful movie but the pacing was mind numbingly glacial. There are only so many times I can experience a 10 minute long scene of the underwater fantasy world accompanied by a moving orchestral score before i start to get bored because theres been only a quantam of character or plot development. It kind of feels like JC tried to have it both ways, having the amazing 3 hour long nature documentary style spectacle spliced into what was probably only 90 minutes worth of narrative, and it just felt disjointed.

I was surprised how compelling Quaritch is. I agree you do see hints of his humanity and don't forget he and the other marine avatars are victims too. They are months old, implanted with mental baggage they had no part in. Sure this charity only goes so far when they are on a rampage but we do see moments where they wrestle with their objectives. The reality of being a hybrid with implanted memories has already forked Quaritch's personality, even if only slightly and you see that in his ultimate decision to back out of executions a couple of times. I know this sounds overly forgiving when they are going around abusing the navi but its still worth noting that they are literally creations of war. Also Neytiri was ready to gut an innocent where as Quaritch didnt, think its only fair to keep that in mind. Im all in for his ultimate redemption.
