A thing I did not expect to happen for me watching the movie was having some anxiety and ptsd stuff happening during the sinking ship scene. I am previous Navy, and seeing them going deeper into the ship was just having my body curl and making me cringe from fear. It was a tough scene to get past.
I understand what you mean, I have a huge fear of the ocean, or just open water really and the scenes where they're just out in the sea was painful. Especially when the kid was getting chased and whenever the whales opened their mouths like that I had to turn around 😂 I was about to cry when he went into the whale's mouth lol
Damn it's rough to see Aaron's fatherly instinct and reaction to Neteyam's story. Man knows exactly what he would do for his own kids and his heart breaks seeing the parents watch their son die
Y'know, at first when I saw that final shot of Jake opening his eyes yet again, I rolled my eyes. But I think I get it now. The 'fortress' is not the Metkayina home per se, but all of Pandora. Jake's not just going to try and mitigate, he's actually going to fight for the planet again. Not sure if he knows about the terraforming plans yet, but the fighting spirit is back - the best defense is a good offense? We'll see in two years!
Yeah, can't wait to see what visual voodoo they pull for the next one. This one was that next-level water simulation they designed for the movie. We're supposed to be getting intense cloud and high-atmosphere simulations for the next one, so I guess we're going air-themed.
Obviously we have to go around and make all the unique connections of Aiwa(sp?) like the other Avatar (water earth fire air) and master all types of civilization types and their legendary mounts.
a detail i love is when Jake says they’re language might aswell be english now that he’s learned it, and it goes from the kids speaking navi to speaking english. they’re actually speaking navi, but it transitions to english so the audience can understand like jake now does.
Wow has that been confirmed? I love the franchise and the na'vi language so much, and I was quite confused on why everyone would speak english. I started thinking maybe they learnt it in order to understand the humans during war times and was really sad I didn't get to hear more of the language amongst the characters
@@annie.phoenix Yup, when there's all Na'vi, they are speaking Na'vi but for us got translated to english. However when they are with humans/Avatars (except Spider, he talks full Na'vi too), we hear them speak Na'vi, case in point when they get captured, Lo'ak and Kiri talk in Na'vi with Quaritch.
I'm glad you guys didn't write off or hate on Spider like so many people who've seen/reacted to this film. Honestly, Spider in my opinion is the most compelling character in terms of potential emotional/dramatic character arcs. The relationships he has with the Sully kids (that see him as a friend/brother) vs Jake & Neytiri (that see him as a "stray cat") vs Jake (adoptive father) & Quaritch (bio father) all have really interesting potential for conflict and character growth.
I was surprised people had issues with him, he wasn't annoying as people claimed him to be and not stupid to just believe he could just instantly change the villains mind
@@alyssabullock6421 I know! It's mind boggling to me. He's such a selfless and kind kid who's been treated so poorly in this film. Genuinely I think the Spider haters have approximately 0 emotional intelligence to be able to ignore that he was treated like a "stray cat" by the closest thing he has to a father figure, tortured by the RDA, and then spent an extended amount of time with Quaritch who actually gave him some semblance of attention and importance (albeit a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome). Some of them even go so far as to retroactively blame him for Neteyam's death because he saved Quaritch. They don't understand that he's never had a father figure that tried to protect him in his life. Anyway, when all's said and done I don't think Jake has earned the right to call Spider his "son" considering he only seemed to give a damn about him when his firstborn son died in part to protect him.
Seeing this movie in 3d was incredible. I know 3D movies get a bad wrap historically, but the technology James Cameron uses for the Avatar movies makes the 3D experience AMAZING. It was such a cool experience that I'm currently in the process of finding a way to burn and convert the Blueray to a VR 3D compatible format so I can watch it in 3D VR again at home.
I feel like Kirri is actually the reincarnation of Grace and their great mother Eywa. At the end of the first movie Grace was going to permanently be Navi but she died before it could finish. So Kirri is a part of Grace and Eywa
You guys probably didn't catch this, but the girl who played the wife of the Water tribe was Kate Winslet, so it was ironic when you made the Titanic connection with the boat sinking considering this is her second collaboration with James Cameron. So much of this film feels like a greatest hits of James Cameron's films. The action at the end definitely gave me True Lies and Aliens vibes, including the new mech suits the humans have and the little sister falling down the drain ala Newt in Aliens, the mobile, one-man subs reminded me a lot of The Abyss, Quartich crushing the skull in his hand gave me serious Terminator skull crushing vibes, the ship sinking definitely recalls Titanic, & the flooding was very Titanic and The Abyss, kinda weird how so much of this film is sort of a compilation of his whole career.
Grace died as they were trying to transfer her from the human body to her Avatar. She didn't make it through so to speak. That's how the movie ended. And now they are saying that the Avatar body later birthed Kiri, spoken by the same actress. So it looks like the transfer kinda worked.
Yeah, the Navi body was still alive, just not responsive because grace was dead. So they kept the body on life support when they realized it was pregnant
I mean they said her soul was with eywa at the time so it's possible that then the tree transferred a different soul into the body as a baby or something.
My theory for what will happen in the next movie is Jake is definitely going to have to rally up all of the Na'vi tribes he can find, and he probably will be traveling from biome to biome trying to convince tribe leaders to join their battle. Maybe one of the tribe leaders will feel threatened and disagree and will be kind of a secondary antagonist. We’ll probably see his son step up more as a main character. And I think that marine biologist guy will probably still be alive and will be hanging out with the scientists. We’ll probably get some stuff with Spider and the Colonel too.
He's gotta go biome to biome and connect with their ancestor sites while learning their ways and one of the family members masters their legendary Poké mounts. Then Grace-Kiri can do the MacGuffin thing at the place and control the whole planet.
This was SO GOOD. I was trying not to expect anything because i didn't want to be too disappointed since i loved the first movie so much, but i was blown away.
One of the reasons they have to film underwater is bc unlike Calvin suggested water has resistance that can’t be naturally simulated with “dry for wet” techniques. Super intricate and corridor crew made great vids on it.
I know this is a few months old but the Avatar franchise is my special interest and just wanted to let everyone know that Spider’s mother was named Paz Socorro, she was a fighter pilot under Quaritch and was killed in the war. She isn’t mentioned in the movies but she’s mentioned in the comic Avatar: The High Ground
One of the reasons I absolutely adore you guys is the fact that you always wait and hold off on watching these films to record it for us to see your reactions 🥺 love you guys
After the first movie, I wanted to see more of Jake and Neytiri. After the second, now, I want to see more of Spider, Lo‘ak and Kiri. They‘re left off with huge inner conflicts: Kiri always felt alienated and different, because of her intense connection to Eywa. Spider joined a family he never really was considered part of, after saving their mortal enemy. He‘s formed a bond with Quaritch, but chose to live with the Sully‘s and with the fact that Neytiri would’ve happily off‘d him to save Kiri. And finally, Lo‘ak. He saw his brother die, his dad literally told him it was his fault and he believes so himself. Then, there is his Spirit Brother Payakan, who probably will be disliked even more, because he had chosen to kill again. Of course I‘m excited to see more of the others as well, but I‘m most thrilled by those three. I believe, because of their inner conflicts, that they will grow more and more distant with the Sully‘s. After losing Neteyam, Lo‘ak will get even more protective over Kiri and she herself is very protective over Spider. I think that the trio will grow closer and eventually help each other with their struggles. And they probably one day will be joined by Tsireya, who has formed a deep bond with Lo‘ak and because of her good soul, she will not let him grieve alone and will stay close to him, because she cares for him.
I think because the hype and the visuals the Avatar movies have this expectation of some revolutionary story but that isn't the point and never has been. It's about the simplicity and beauty in culture and in nature. The fellowship of community and family. It's long because learning and adopting into a new culture cannot and should not be done quickly. There is so much symbolism in the training scenes and how it can correlate to our society that I could write a whole novel. All in all this movie is much better when you rewatch with the first one fresh in your mind and you focus less on what is going to happen in the main story and more on what is going on in the moment and what that means.
I really don’t understand the hate this movie received. I’m fine with people not liking it. But their reason are very contradicting. 1) They would say it has a simple plot. But mind I ask, WHEN HAS THIS EVER BEEN A PROBLEM? One of the most profitable movies last year were top gun maverick. Receiving praises all around, never heard a complaint about the movie being too simple (which it is). And don’t get me stated with marvel and Star Wars content. Like it feels like there’s a hidden agenda with people and this movie. Because even before it released they’re were people non-stop hating on a film that has yet to be released.
It’s baseless hate because they hate Cameron. Cameron is rumored to be a real dick and hard to work with so automatically that means people use that as an excuse to hate every movie he makes regardless of whether it’s good or not.
Jake sees Loak as an extension of himself. He always expects the worst of him. But Jake sees Neteyam as an extension of his twin brother who he probably has a lot more respect for
I had every intension of seeing this one in theaters multiple times. The tul'kun hunting scene messed me up. I could not make myself sit through that again in that large of a scale. I barely held it together after Neteyam. I knew the moment he showed back up on the boat he was going to die but it didn't make the hurt any less, especially with Zoe's performance. You can tell she tapped into something built into mothers for that anger, grief, and sadness.
56:02 I hate seeing Aaron cry man, it's always when the kids get hurt or killed in movies when he cries cus he's a father and you can tell it affects him more.
This was such an incredibly thrilling experience visually and in terms of action! The family dynamic may have been wonky at first but by the end, it absolutely rocked! Seeing it in the cinema with 3D blew me away! It’s a slow movie to really take in since it’s one you’re supposed to, definitively, live it. SUPER EXCITED FOR THE NEW SEQUELS! 😍🙌 P.S. Tuktirey is the best kid. 💞
Nurse Jackie got caught smuggling all those pills, got fired, joined the army, rose to the rank of General, went off planet and became in charge of the whole planet's worth of operations and missions fighting giant aliens. She's insane.
One of the great little details that Cameron got so right and all of these other movies (Aquaman) get wrong about underwater cinematography is that the actors or characters have air bubbles forming on their skin.
Idk if it has been confirmed but my opinion about Kiri is that she is a product of them trying to save Grace last movie by having Aewa transfer her into her avatar but it not working. Kiri could be Aewas way of bringing Grace back to life, which is why Kiri is shown to have this giga connection to Aewa and the planet.
The younger/child actors in this movies were 🔥. I really enjoyed their performances and i wish they had been the main characters. That would have made the film so much interesting
Not really. Ppl cared about them mid-movie or toward the end because we had time with them. The choice to make them the main characters in movie 3 or 4 is a better call in my opinion ;).
I saw this in 3D and it was stunning. Me and my mom just stayed in the theater for the credits to look at the beautiful, calming ocean scenes. I've been snorkeling and the visuals are almost 100% realistic!!! Insane.
Easily my favorite movie of 2022. I implore everyone to see this movie in 3D, especially imax 3D at least. Real 3D is gonna look kinda framey in some scenes. I’ve seen this movie at least 5 times, and I can’t wait to see what James does with 3- yes I’ve read about the aggressive fire Na’vi but there’s also a confidence he displays here introducing sm cool things like Bridgehead or future antagonists- possibly immortal ones who’ve been on that Taikun juice- which I can’t wait to see be used in the future
Fantastic four is one of the only upcoming marvel movies I’m actually hyped for. I just feel like they know they absolutely can not mess that up cus once they get introduced they’re gonna big players in the mcu going forward for years. I’m also excited for the X-men but it looks like we aren’t gonna get them until after kang dynasty and secret wars
Having adored the first film, I was looking forward to its sequel for years, like other fans have. I even went to an IMAX 3D showing, w/ my parents, for the rerelease of the first film this past September to refresh my memory, before seeing the sequel. When Way of Water released in theaters, I was there the Thursday it opened back in December, loved it from beginning to end. Even though it was a standard screening. A week later, I spent over $160 for an IMAX 3D showing. Took my parents, my sister, her husband n their 2 daughters along w/ me to experience the film. I enjoyed it even more, the 2nd viewing. JC’s plan is 5 films in total I believe. The 3rd film is already shot, n is being edited down to whatever runtime JC is comfortable w/. So the wait won’t b as long this time. 🤣👏
I don't believe Neytiri ever intended to kill Spider. The threat was just for show. After she cut him, she threw him behind her, not toward Quartrich. She may think he belongs with his own kind, but she knows how much he means to her own kids. ijs
about spider , spider never had a real family , only at the end of climax jake call him "son for a son " in the beigining he was just a stray cat , if u read the comics spider makes much more sense ,there is a line in comic spider adopted us , which means he sees jake's family as his but they see him as merely a stray cat except kiri.
I got exactly what I was expecting with this movie. I went in expecting a great world, groundbreaking visuals and special effects but nothing special story-wise, just like the first movie.
I had the same issue that Aaron had. It's very weird that the water peeps just disappeared for some reason. That and then how the colonel knew he had killed one of his kids and said it over the radio yet he had no way of knowing that.
1- Cameron said that he cut 10 min of action’s scenes because they were too graphic. Also Ronal and Tonowari were supposed to reunite with tsireya and the Sully at the end but Jim said it didn’t work well on the screen testing because it shift the focus from the core family 2- They had scope on their guns they were able to see the family mourning neteyam.
so, in the first one grace was dying so they took both her and her avatar to the tree thing and connected both trying to move her soul from her dying human body into the healthy avatar body. it was what they did with Jake, but he wasn't dying. you can look at kiri one of two ways i think: 1. she is the daughter of both Grace and eywa (mother nature). 2. it's grace, reborn. eywa couldn't complete the transfer of souls, but she could transfer Grace's soul into the avatar as a pregnancy
Once I saw the titles of the next movies they are making then the connection with kiri in the planet made sense, one of the next movies is literally gunna be called “the search for ahway” I think
I appreciate the fact that you guys waited to watch this by not going to the theatre but you guys really should watch Avatar movies on the big screen. To experience it in full potential of in 3D/Imax. At least do it for the next Avatar movies.
Man I love these Avatar movies but if James Cameron let a team of writers come for the next few movies and set up a more unique plot, I think the writing for the characters is fine they just need a better story, with James amazing directing and visuals combined with a unique story would send these movie to another level
some movies are made for theatre experience , avatar movies are such ones , the 3 hrs doesnt feel like it . and about water navi vanished beacuse its already 3hr movie , and they have to cut some scenes from the climax , thats why only sully vs colonel battle was shown after at some point in climax.
I love you guys, but kinda upset you didnt like the main bad guy coming back for this movie. I loved the concept of him coming back to finish what he couldn't, but it's kinda a different character. I think in the sequels, this version we meet will turn good, but another avatar with his conscience will come back with even more hate for what his past self became. I think the rivalry between jake and Q could be as legendary as ash and team rocket.
This version will turn good? Because he showed so much goodness this movie right? Lmao. His only decent act was being somewhat kind to Spider. Who's his son. Thats it. Everything else he does isn't just evil, but he does it with sadistic pleasure
@@Billyregin maybe not so much turn good but i think its to be assumed he is growing to like the planet and if he starts thinking for himself or they try to cancel his program and he escapes he could be on the "good" side....
I find it funny that most of Eric's critiques are aplicable to Marvel and Star Wars movies, especially the one about Stephen Lang coming back from the dead. I didn't like it either, tbh, but I found his critique about it funny.
I think he went into the film expecting not to like it. That’s the vibe I got anyway. I think it’s become so popular to dunk on these movies, and sadly Eric seems to have latched onto that. Sure, these movies aren’t flawless or masterpieces or anything, but they are perfectly good and enjoyable movies. I’m just happy to see more original IP’s (not based on an existing work) like this thriving.
Something that I’ve been thinking about is Kiri’s seizure could be because she was essentially plugged into god and there is only so much that your brain can take of that before it takes its toll, and the reason she sees her mother is for lake of better phrasing, eywa is using Grace as an avatar to communicate through the “memories” and it could be in part actually Grace because she was “with eywa” when she died in the first movie so it could have actually been her talking and not eywa but I like to think it ended with eywa talking to her through grace.
So apparently the reason the Metkayina disappeared in the end was because James Cameron thought their kills were too brutal or something. I’m not sure we’re they got this info from but I thought I could mention it.
Hey guys, off topic, but are you planning to see the series “Queen Charlotte a Bridgerton story”? That would be so amazing (it’s about how the queen Charlotte fall in love with the King)
okay, you guys do know the connection sensors are in their “hair” and not their tails right? everyone keeps using them interchangeably when they aren’t lol
I saw this on my feed, and I was like “ah man…do I really want to spend 1 hour 30 minutes in the middle of my workday to watch this?” Yes. The answer is yes!
With all due respect, I feel like people who are overly harsh on their criticism of the avatar movies seem to be showing some kind of cognitive dissonance. Based on the reaction of these guys, they clearly throughly enjoyed the movie and were invested in what was happening, shed tears at Netayam's death, were well into the action and were rooting for the main characters all the way, but then once it was over they seemed to be hesitant to be overly positive, almost like they're obligated to be critical of it. They all liked it clearly and say as much at the end, but it seems less enthusiastic then their reactions would indicate. Other reactors had very similar reactions to these and had no hesitation gushing over the movie afterwards, and then there were those who were clearly not that invested and said as much afterwards, both pretty honest. But then there are those who seem to really like it but nevertheless seem almost ashamed of saying anything overly positive about it. I feel like people get jaded over movies so easily these days, thinking a simple, predictable story and characters just always equals "bad" for some reason and just has to be crapped on for that reason alone, even though most of these people would be perfectly fine with this in many other movies that they enjoy. The criticism makes no sense, it completely dismisses any of the other factors that contribute to ones enjoyment of a movie; the performances, the dialogue, the interplay between characters, the ideas and concepts, the production quality and design (especially for a fantasy or sci fi movie), the editing and pacing, cinematography, soundtrack etc. Regardless of how familiar a story is, that doesn't actually impact any of these things, the movie as a whole can still be "good" despite how familiar the story it is. But instead the hypercritical and cynical film critic culture online these days has just killed any leaway on films that work beyond whats on the written page; most of the things I mentioned in that list is derived from the script anyway so there's that... I guarantee most of the people who engage in this kind of thinking have never been near a film set or a writing class, and seem to talk so confidently about these things despite what actual filmmakers and writers have to say; look up opinions from people in the industry on the avatar movies and they're mostly very positive, there are even writing classes online that use the first movie as a positive example of effective screenwriting, think about that... I feel like the avatar movies have shown up the disconnect that exists in movie tastes between the internet film fan community and the rest of the world. Both movies are phenomenal worldwide successes, gain overly positive word of mouth and repeat viewings (way of water is still in theatres!), celebrated at awards season and gain mostly positive critic reviews; even the re-release of the first movie September last year, which came with little fan fare, did great and was loved by those who watched it for the first time. And yet, you go to the online community and no one seems to care; not a lot of meme content or parodies or sketches etc. What's weirder is that people take this as a gauge of how successful something is, even though the people who make this content are a tiny percentage of the world's population, and a tiny percentage of the movie going audience, so why should they be an indicator for how well a movie does? Why not just ride along with what the movie has in store and be honest with how you felt, regardless of what a few other people say; I'd say they're less inclined to understand how successful movies work than the ones putting the time and effort making those movies, so perhaps give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt when they catch your attention!
Like all great James Cameron movies, people will grow to love Avatar and The Way of Water the more times they see them. These movies will age like wine
Yeap... I saw that arm flying out of his body in 3D and it was awesome 🤣🤣🤣 Plussssss is probably the first movie that I can actually see the things going on in the dark.
I feel like this movie was def setting up the third movie and really starting to build these characters because the family is going to be a big focal point, especially Kiri and Loak. I loved this movie so much and I think it was beautifully shot and man those water scenessss....so darn real. But yea all in all this movie was a big setup for what is to come for the next 3.
This movie has every single stereotypical movie things to make it dramatic and ruin the movie. Pretty dumb, definitely could have been shortened by like a hour and a half. Very predictable movie.
how are you watching this?? its not available to watch anywhere, not disney, not able to watch online either!! so where are they watching this D: does anyone know cause i STILL havent seen this movie. and i wanna see it on my own.
i watched this in IMAX and 4d and it was incredible! i understand the pace isn’t for everybody but this is how james cameron works and it to me is amazing, i like the realism and the slow build. the cgi and cinematic experience is something else and i loved it
As 80%+ of the reason to watch this movie is about the visuals, you guys should really have skipped the initial reaction here to have watched it in a real 3D HFR IMAX.
there a few times when I actually care to see something at the cinemas, Ive had few experiences when the cinema big screen was the best way to watch. saw this new years eve and I could only call the experience a specticule to watch
I watched the first Avatar in 4K just before going into the theater for this one thinking... "it can't be that much better looking right?" well,, I was wrong.
I couldn't help but laugh at all the people online who said the movie would flop and i was like no it's making over 2 billion at least and it's made 2.5 billion.
There are movies with better characters, dialogue and plot, but still Avatar 1/2 are my favorite movies ever. Cameron somehow managed to satisfy tose deep instinctual urges within us. Hard feeling to explain
You know, I definitely understand what Eric is saying about the CGI character barrier. I felt the same way watching it in theaters. Even though the Navi are so well done now and realistic, there's still something in my head that prevents me from treating them the same as real human actors. It's almost uncanny valley but not quite that - hard to describe. And traditional animation skips uncanny valley, so I don't have this issue there. I'm quite emotional normally and really wanted to feel for the son's death and the family's reaction to it, but I just didn't really feel that emotional connection. Still, it was very beautiful, and I'm glad Cameron took so long to work on the sequels because it shows. Unbelievable how beautiful the ocean was.
So, no, most of the water you're seeing on screen isn't fake, it's real. One of the reasons it took Cameron a decade to make this film is, in addition to wanting to have a full-complete outline for what all 4 sequels will be (unlike the Star Wars sequel trilogy), Cameron wanted to use real underwater performance capture, but unfortunately that technology wasn't available & took years to develop. So he spent years trying to develop new camera technology that would allow him to do performance capture underwater that wasn't affected by the lense refractions that has prevented performance capture to be done underwater previously. This also meant all the actors had to be trained to hold their breaths for extended periods so that Cameron could get long shots without having to cut constantly. So yes, most of these shots are the actors actually underwater, that's why it looks so real.
Yes, finally this is what I have been waiting for 🙂 From yesterday to today, the reaction video has just appeared, I am very excited to see your reactions, thank you for this reaction video.👍🏻 I hope you guys are always healthy and keep up the good spirits okay👍🏻🔥 and nice to meet you I'm from Indonesia✌🏻
Just wanted to say thank you all for the great sacrifice you made by not seeing this one on IMAX, just to give us a true "first time watching" reaction. You deserve a lot more subscribers guys.
Still not a fan of Lo'ak and his impulsiveness costing his family big time. That being said this was one of the best viewing experiences in cinema that I've ever had in my life and I went to see it twice!
You pretty much summed up my thoughts on this movie. The story isn’t anything particularly unique but it’s an enjoyable watch and visually stunning. Also you guys should watch Titanic: 20 Years Later with James Cameron if you haven’t already.
