Kataras 14, her mom was killed approximately 6-8 years before the events of avatar. Hamas is an old woman and was captured by the fire nation when she was maybe in her 20s which would have been probably 40 years before Aang broke out of the ice

The theory actually goes that Hama scared the shit out of the fire nation with her blood bending when she escaped and they decided they weren't taking any prisoners anymore like they used to.

I think its more likely that the reason they are not taking prisoners is because Hama escaped the prison and thats why they killed Katara’s mum

Katara's mother passed away when Katara was only 8 years old, six years before the start of the show. In the show, Hama is depicted as being in her 70s or 80s. Therefore, when Katara's mother passed away, she would have been in her late 60s or 70s. However, when Hama escaped, she appeared in her late 40s to 50s. If the Southern Raiders were looking for Hama, they would have had to send them immediately, not decades later, as Hama was not old when she escaped. The Southern Raiders would have had to know what kind of woman they were looking for, and it is clear that Kya and Hama were not the same age. Therefore, this theory is not possible.

Actions or even inactions have long-term consequences that will play out sooner or later, as seen with the tragic villain who was the original blood bender, created by the hands of the immoral and dehumanizing Fire Nation.

Even if those version wasn’t tru, it could be they heard about the water bender, but after Hama, instead of taking prisoners they just killed them

I think it was a combination of the air bending avatar disappearing and the possibility of them reincarnating into a water bender, the prestige of wiping out another type bender (the water benders), but on the dl, the possibility of more erroneous or irregular water benders emerging, like blood bending.

As much as that theory. Sounds cool, I don't think that really works period when she escapes from the fire Bender's, she seems fairly young period I don't think she would have aged a couple of decades within the span of Qatar, losing her mother to when they meet her.

But they were multiple water benders fighting back against the fire nation when Hama was captured though.

Since Hama is a lot older and the timeline of her escape doesn’t really align with the raid, I think it’s more likely that since the fire nation found out about bloodbending, they just decided to kill any and all supposed water benders from that point on. The theory in this video could be true but they probably just heard there was another waterbender and didn’t want to take chances.

I think Hama was too young at the time of escape to be the water bender the soldiers were looking for when the raid that killed Kya happened. In the flashback she still has dark hair but when we meet her, her hair is fully gray and she's roughly the same age as Gran Gran. So the soldiers were definitely looking for Katara. But knowing that there was a water bender from the Southern Tribe that could control people, they definitely weren't taking any chances in case it was tribal knowledge.

They weren’t looking for her but they learned not to take unnecessary risks. Better to kill them then to waste resources on capturing them only to have them escape in a way you dont fully understand but is definitely bending related.

i just assumed the fire nation thought the avatar died, so they looked for the next one by imprisining/killing waterbenders

I haven't heard that last part before that Yun Ra was looking for Hama.

really intresting idea. my theory is sort of similar. the reason why they weren't taking prisoners is because some waterbender's could bloodbend, of course only one knew how to do it but the fire nation didn't know that. so even one could be a threat because of how powerful it is. so they stopped taking waterbending prisoners and just started killing them. I recon if the fire nation got what it wanted there would be no water and air. maybe earth

Or the southern raiders heard about Hama's power. So they killed waterbenders in case Hama's legacy was still around. Since Hama was way too old by that time to still look Kya's age [Kataras mother]

That sounds a bit too victim blame-y to me; if I was wrongfully captured and had that power, the no firenation soldier would have been left unbent lol.

"They were looking for a recently escaped Hama" When she escaped she was in like her 20s, when katara mom is killed she's probably like 80, it doesn't make sense lol

I think katara is the reason of Fire Nation learning there is water bender in southern water tribe. I think someone saw her bending and told the Fire Nation that's why they came to end the water bender. We saw in the start katara likes bending even if sokka told her not to do it

Their father was searching for a water bending teacher. Somebody snitched to the fire nation. That's why they came looking for a water bender. And since the last water bender they captured had eacaped, they decided to not capture any more

How I didn’t look very old when she busted out of prison. She’s the same age as Katara and Sokkas grandmother so I don’t think this the timeline quite makes sense.

This makes Hama out to be the villain or at fault when in actuality she was just acting in self defence, the firenation is the only one to blame for kayas death

I don't think the timeline syncs up for that. Hama escaped in her 20s or maybe early 30s. That would have been decades before Katara was born, quite possibly even before Kya was born. If they were looking specifically for Hama, they would have just rounded up all the old people and ended the threat. I mean, it shows that even people like the Mechanist can betray his people to protect them, very easy and realistic to assume that someone thought they were protecting the Tribe by ratting out Katara.

I highly doubt it , if that was the case they would be informed that the waterbender they are looking for is an old lady Instead they didn't know anything When Hana was taken prisoner Katara's GRANDMA was a young woman, Kya would MAYBE be a 10 year old Maybe by the time Hana escaped the prison I don't remember how long Hana said she was imprisoned so maybe Kya was a todler by that time Between Hana's escape and Kya's growing up then having 2 children it just doesn't make sense that they were "looking for Hana" and thats why Kya died More probebbly someone either snitched or fire nation had a spy inside the villege and they saw someone ( Katara) do a waterbending, they probbebly didn't see WHo it was they just reported " Hey ! There is still a waterbender here! "

This ones kinda inaccurate because of the age gap. The general theory is, with the fire nation knowing waterbending prisoners can bloodbend and escape anyway, they just end all waterbenders they find.

The timing is way off. Hama broke out of prison long before Katara was born. They would have gone looking for her way sooner.
