This is a big one. How can many, many mythologies within God of War exist at the same time? How can many pantheons have control of the sea, the sky etc.? How can there be many creation myths at the same time? Perhaps, there's an answer after all...

Well, Greece is uninhabitable unless if the transition to the Roman Empire saved it since there’s new gods to take the Greek gods places and control the hell that kratos left behind and Norway has been taken over by kratos. I can see the next pantheon having a hard time thinking he’s a good guy now since he just destroyed his home and took over another pantheon. Now that I think of it, kratos finding out the Roman gods essentially saved Greece (but act the same cuz it’s just a copy paste irl) and possibly returning just to see how it’s changed only to find out the people still haven’t forgotten the ghost of Sparta now that he’s a boogeyman that their home would make a pretty cool comic

The game Fate/Grand Order introduced this concept called "Textures", which in a nutshell are the planet being divided into different zones with different metaphysical laws as enforced by powerful beings such as gods. In Sumeria you could just dig to the underworld for example, which wasn't possible in more modern eras. After GoW 4's revelations, I sort of assumed something similar was going on here too.

@ThePanther97
@ThePanther97 8 месяцев назад
@@DirtyDev Tyr needed the Unity Stone to travel to other mythological realms, so he didn't travel by conventional means. Another issue with this is the fact that each mythology has their own universal creation events that are considered canon, even the developers say it's all valid. Cory Barlog has even corroborated that they are separated by dimension and has even acknowledged that the universes that were created are in his mind "referring to the universes that they themselves have dominion over," he also went on to say "the greater "actual" universe has yet to be explored," pretty much saying that anything outside of those alternate dimensions with their own unique cosmos hasn't been explored yet. He also said that in each geographical region on Earth "there exists a version of the universe with it's dimensions and Earth as inspired by the prevalent mythology and local belief system," so each mythology exists in its own dimension inspired by the real world cultures of that real world region. In closing, them existing in different dimensions makes sense, especially since they all have unique universe creations that are all valid to God of War's lore and are totally separate from each other.

I thought this was explained at the beginning of God od War: Ascension. The primordials, beings that predate the universe, fought endlessly until their fighting spawned creation. All creation stories in this universe reference that event, hence why both Gaia and Surtr remember the creation of Earth. This is even somewhat confirmed in GoW:R when Surtr says the Blades of Chaos have power and it is irrelevant what lands they're from, because they contain Primordial fire.
@bigballs7911
@bigballs7911 7 месяцев назад
The Norse realm has a separate creation story though, ymir is the first being in the norse.Norse. Gaia is responsible for the creation of the earth so of course she remembers. Surtr remembers because he existed after the first 2 realms were created (muspelheim and helheim) and was around to know about Odin killing ymir and making midgard. These two stories do not coexist in the same world.
@josh678595

@@bigballs7911 I'm saying they both remember the creation of the world because they were both spawned out of the fighting of the cosmic primordials BEFORE the creation of the world, just in different areas. The best way to think of this concept is like an empire in ancient times: More specifically, the capital city from which that empire spawned (in this case we can compare it to any pantheon). For this example, let's use Rome (how original). The capital city of Rome, for a time, was the city of Rome itself (although it was still considered to be the capital at least in spirit during the years of the late empire and after the split), and like other states at the time, the actual concept of a modern border was not a thing. Instead, empires and other states, even tribes and confederations all had a stretch of land that belonged to nobody. This is obviously a "No Man's Land" deal. Now, as for the empire or city state, or whatever we use as an example, as I said in this case, Rome, it is the capital city of the state itself which holds influence over the many swathes of land it has expanded to. However, this is not always shown on a map. Instead, most areas are colored or filled in as the color that represents the state itself. In this case, we may look at whatever region tends to be mountainous and has a historical record of having mountain tribes: Sardinia's interior, and Isauria in Asia Minor (mod. day Turkiye). Some regions are difficult to influence and claim due to a plethora of factors, one is most predominantly geographical. If a state attempts to project influence into a mountainous region (at least during the times of Antiquity), it will be met with a great pushback. Rome had built forts inland on the island of Sardinia in such a way that the mountainous interior was encircled. The region of Isauria was not even fully conquered in the 500's AD. Let us also look at the Zagros Mountains that contain Iran. Historically, the Iranian empires have dwindled in size, progressively over time, due to a number of outside factors, but also in part, due to the geography. Even today, mountainous terrain is both a boon and a weakness. So, let's go back to a specific state, or region's, pantheon. The pantheon may have, in some cases, as much power and projection as the state it is home to, or in other words, may be locked similarly by the state's geography. In other cases, for pilgrims or settlers of peoples who come from foreign lands and partake in foreign faiths, they may bring their home's influence with them in some way, shape, or form, whether it be their culture, religion, etc. In some cases, a newer faith, or older faith may come to supersede another faith in some region. In short, a pantheon's influence only expands to the limits of how far its followers venture. But it may be limited to specifically the people who follow said pantheon. If there is a man of the Hellenic faith in mod. day Norway, then his pantheon may perhaps hold dominion over him, although he is now within the limits of a new pantheon, one foreign to him. But because the Norse pantheon, in this case finds this man within its domain, its realm, and perhaps point of origin, this pantheon's influence would be vastly greater than the Hellenic one, therefore this man who hails from Greece may now be under Norse jurisdiction. I'd imagine, that because each pantheon holds dominion over specific regions of the world (and while syncretism is a thing and could cause some pantheons to "bleed together" somewhat), I'd imagine there is a stretch of "No Man's Land" in which no influence exists, much like that of an old state.

The whole thing about Kratos' godly powers is a pretty interesting element of this whole theory. IF it's true that godly powers only go so far as the barriers of the realm, then the games contradict this. Tyr went to other realms using magical items of his own land, becoming a figure of worship in other pantheons (this is true in the real world, where the god Tyr in fact is seen as a common element in many pantheons. Some theories even suggesting that the name Tyr and the title "Deus", along with "theos", stem from the same root, meaning that "Tyr" might just be the original head-god of tribal religions. Just a thought.) So if Tyr managed to do that, then it's clear that both magical items and the power to BE a god and have godly powers are NOT in fact limited to their respective realms of origin. It's possible that the powers GIFTED to Kratos by the gods, as his lesser powers, are what dissapeared over time. This begs the question, however, WHERE are his other weapons? The blades of chaos were specifically gifted to him by Ares and were in fact replaced over time by Athena. Yet we see the blades of chaos arrive in their original form in Midgard. HOWEVER, the markings on the blades of chaos are notably different from their original markings, matching the midgardian themes. We also know that Kratos maintained and kept what made him a god in the first place. The god of strength. He BECAME the god of war later on, and that might be the title the developers officially went with, but his ORIGINAL powers are very clearly that of massive and perhaps even unlimited strength, capped only by Kratos' willpower. (though this latter part is yet to be confirmed. However, it seems to be consistent with the feats he is shown to be capable of. During battle he struggles against minor mobs but at the same time he can LIFT A WHOLE TEMPLE if he really tries hard enough.) So this might lead us to a secondary hypothesis. There might just be a "grand plan", in which Kratos is involved. The Norns indicate that Kratos "follows his nature" and that this leads him to the conclusion he was written for, a conclusion that wasn't made by the gods themselves in their respective realms, as Odin knows nothing of it and is in fact trying to prevent his own prophecy from coming to a conclusion. Kratos seems to act as the resident "godkiller", cleaning up two seperate pantheons for differing reasons. With the revelation of the rift and the revelation that gods KEEP some of their traits between worlds, despite other powers dissapearing, it might just be that A) Gods have a source of primal power and gifts that they harness and get to keep regardless of the realm they visit or destroy B) Kratos and possibly Tyr are UNIQUE in that they are the ones that can do the above, for a reason as of yet unexplained and perhaps for a plan that the gods themselves know nothing of. Alternatively, it might be that Tyr kept his powers and magical items because midgard was never destroyed. However, this does not explain why Kratos kept his or kept the blades of chaos (while seemingly other items were destroyed, though this may have had a different cause. It seems all his items were destroyed in the clash with Zeus, and the blade of olympus was simply left behind. With only his current version of the blades of chaos remaining. But then that begs the question again: why did only the blades remain? It's possible that what has been eluded to in Ragnarok makes the blades of chaos unique, regardless of whether the greek gods knew about it or not. The blades possess a "primordial flame" that was not created by the gods of the greek pantheon themselves. Perhaps that is what spared the blades from destruction, unlike the other items and powers. In truth, lots of questions remain, perhaps with no real answers to ever be given.

This was great and my understanding of how the worlds worked was essentially this. This is also why I believe Atreus will cross the mythology barrier to Celtic mythology for the DLC and learn of the different mythos working around that area that were essentially what was leftover after the Fall of Rome. That is also how I believe Mimir knows about Kratos as the Ghost of Sparta. Because the Celtic Gods knew of the Romans and the Romans knew of the Greeks.

I theorise that the Roman gods will be a reincarnation of the Greek gods based on the last surviving Greek civilians who touch the blade of Olympus becoming, Jupiter (the new Zeus), Mercury (the new hades) and Neptune (the new Poseidon) with these gods creating the Roman mythology and being more righteous and less corrupt versions of the olympians. Essentially like pocket dimension or universes inside of a multi verse. It’s also become apparent that some pantheon are aware of the other pantheons; more than likely acknowledging the info given to us by Cory himself. Cory Barlog himself on the matter; “The ‘actual’ god of war earths geography is the same as our real earths. I always interpreted the different creation myths as simply starting from different points, but ending up in the same place. All of these Gods and Magic come from their own realms of Chaos, but have all ended up in the "Mortal World", our dimension. Therefore Earth is essentially a collection of different creation events coming together and adding on to the same planet. Like an interdimensional hotspot.

Tomato. I think the reason that all the mythology’s have similarities is maybe a war. All the pantheons fight to rule the whole world. The wars end in a stalemate and the gods all agree to set boundaries. They trade ideas like humans, trees, agriculture, the sun, the moon, etc. To explain the higher existence maybe instead of a stalemate one pantheon won and decided to take over the galaxy, choosing only the strongest of the gods to leave Earth and join them in their galactic conquest. Any event on Earth is a challenge to see who is worthy of joining the greatest pantheon. This would open a huge door for Kratos to be invited to this great pantheon and end up destroying it after discovering how terrible its gods are.
@archeryguy1701

A lot of this matches up pretty well with what I was imagining in my mind as well. Maybe not the parts about each mythology zone having their own sun/moon/etc, but I was approaching the GoW universe with the idea that the mythologies were kind of like empires with their own distinct boundaries. I felt like Ragnarok kind of helped put the concept of "different realms" to bed with various Tyr artifacts being referenced as having come from the south or the west, etc. I do think there might, to a SMALL degree, be different realms, but through the various magics at play, the separate realms are only accessible from within specific mythological boundaries. Maybe because that area's type of magic allows it or the connection is simply stronger. So that could explain places like Muspelhiem or Nilfhiem. One concept I hadn't really considered before is that the gods of earth are not really gods, or at least not the Big Gods, and there's another tier of gods that created and maybe control them. That could actually be an interesting concept to wrap up the GoW saga.... the last 1-3 games involve Kratos going to war with the gods that rule over everything.

How does each God of War co-exist with others of the mythology? Simple: Olympian: "You stay over there in the sands, and I'll stay over here." They're basically like different kingdoms. Each Kingdom has power only over their own lands and become powerless when they're outside. Nah the Gods didnt loose their power just by going into another Pantheon,per Ragnarok, it explain that Magics is a fundamental aspect that already exist before the Creation of each Pantheons main reality thus part of *Primordial stuff* and is the very make up of Realms, Kratos lost all his powers because Greek Pantheon are no more (but Kratos still able to regain his original strength and Blade of Chaos along side a sliver portion of Hope inside him)

Some gods survived by joining other pantheons. It's also seems to work by geographic areas. When it comes to the myths of creations, I don't know how it work. Hmans are the one creating gods with their faiths, so the gods shouldn't be able to exist without them, much less to be at the creator of humanity.

The thing you mention of a "God of gods' and what not is interesting. The demiurge and Gnosticism would fit well into the mythos of the series honestly. Alternatively, I imagine it could be working on the Hindu type of rules, where there is a prominent force acting in all and yet passive at the same time that represents ultimate truth, Brahma. It is "God" but is as much impersonal as personal. Its why in Hinduism there are Gods, both big G and little g, because for it to act it must take the form of these Gods and in Hinduism depending on who you ask the true face and form of Brahma is one of these Gods like Shiva, Shakti, etc. A number of these Gods are still part of the reincarnation cycles(in Buddhism, they all are) and thus subject to death and other things still but maybe reborn at a later date or through aid by other Gods(Or a big g god, like VIshnu or Shiva). I know in some games Gods don't die in the traditional sense, and in games I've played like Sacrifice, they can even come back, possibly representing the same forces they did whilst likely under a new ego and identity since a number of gods tend to be that: A force of nature with a soul, a personality. I tend to roll my eyes at most of such portrayals cause many media like to portray gods as just a super powered human and never really confront the, somewhat, eldritch nature of their being, or assuming that the destruction of such a being will carry no consequences(Though GoW3 did show that Kratos path of revenge was fucking everything up). The Chaos Gods, at least as far as 40k is concerned, note that the Chaos pantheon is a accumulation of all the emotions of the galaxy pooled to create a sentient force of will and destroying them would mean destroying the forces they represent as well. Just alot of interesting thoughts to be had.

@@rgama1173 Its possibly based on the idea of Gods of ancient lore being actually heroes deified in some way(Course I also heard that, and likely is the true origin of the this idea, that such a thing was done to avoid Christian destruction of pagan materials). It doesn't help when they want to make them antagonists or, rarely these days, some form of helper/protagonist. Imagine trying to fight something that has no true form, since most forms of these dieties are technically anthros, their forms far beyond human understanding. I think people often fail to understand how, and I'm sure there is a better term than this, "eldritch" Gods can be. It should be noted when Khrisna showed his true form to Arjuna, there was no better way to describe it than terrifying, as Arjuna begged him to return to humanoid form.

I thought that everything was going to be affected by Poseidon’s death but when I replayed GOW3 I realized Greece was basically a big bowl with the mountains covering Greece.

I JUST started playing it recently. The idea of the universe being more than just one kind of mythology blew my mind and i tried to rationalize it. I truly want to know and understand what is going on because it doesn't make sense to me but luckily this video exist

@@MidChronicler cool video, I hope Ainu mythology, Native American myths/legends, Inca mythology, Maya Mythology, Korean mythology, Australian Aboriginal mythology/traditional beliefs, Inuit mythology and African mythologies/religions show up in God of War one day.

So basically. The god of war mythologies function kind of the same as in the age of mythology game. The different mythologies have pantheons of gods which powers extend to where the gods were worshipped, maybe, if the greek pantheon wasn't destroyed in GoW3 maybe kratos could theorically still use the greek powers in the norse world

Was thoroughly entertained by this video, these kinds of videos remind me of those old times back when i used to ponder about the assassins creed universe and the whole isu civilization thing, fun stuff. Ofc it all became a mess later.... and hopefully gow doesn't go down the same route. Now the interesting bit for me here is the parallel you draw between the gods being mean spirited and sharing a connection with that higher entity (sorry forgot the name) who opposes the god of gods that stands for truth and enlightenment. Imagine the next gow game takes a much theologically deeper approach wherein even if they don't explore this whole co-existence of mythologies they atleast write one banger finale story for kratos wherein he must redefine godhood. I personally feel this way gow can have a core theme whilst also touching on the co-existence aspects. I wish i could talk about this in great length with you chronicler, just a personal idea for next gow story that i wanted to share with you and now this video of yours makes it a little more plausible. Good video❤

Appreciate the support! Yeah, I don’t know if we’ll ever get to the definitive “finale” of the series, there are plenty of mythologies to explore on their own before we mush them together in a larger plot. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on that!

I feel like its a retcon because if helios dies nyx would plunge the universe into darkness and if helios was around how did he and Ra control the sun going around? Do they share it from night and day? Because there's two issues. Apothis and nyx who both has plans to decend the universe into darkness.

It's interesting that this is not something exclusive to the God of War fandom or to us nowadays, the ancient pagans were also concerned with these issues even more than us because it was, well, their religion, and perhaps in some of the answers that They thought this might be the answer to this puzzle because, thinking about it, they came to the following conclusions, some had mythological narratives to explain this, such as the myth of Typhon, explaining that the Greek gods traveled the world in different forms to escape the beast and gave rise to this to the various myths and mythology around the world, others were syncretic and believed that all mythologies told the same stories but with different details given how old these narratives were and that their real origin was lost over time (this is very taken to serious even by academic studies to this day, and the Romans particularly believed in this idea) and another is that all gods existed and that they were the so-called regional gods or the famous enotheism that believes that all gods exist and that any human can worship them but that the god you worship will have power over you and your destiny, and when a group of worshipers of one or more deities adopted a deity as their patron, your destiny was in their hands and these deities defended their people, usually cities or kingdoms since there were regional gods of cities and large kingdoms (in fact Greece was a group of small kingdoms that was almost never united in the way we have today, but they shared their culture and deities among themselves) who were patrons of these regions, this was in fact the most common interpretation throughout the world for most of history and seems to be more or less the one that the god of war chose to use with the difference that the gods only kind of existed on larger planes of existence and that each region could worship them as they wanted, but they did not have territories of physical influence like in God of War and instead they dominated freely over the world and in relation to creation myths they believed that everyone said the same thing but with names and different details because if you look at them, they almost all say the same thing but with different names and details, so they mixed enotheism with ecumenism, the idea that all gods are the same, and it is worth noting that a good part of these ancient mythologies believed that there was a supreme and absolute God who reigned over the others, He changed his name but was given as the God of gods and the absolute existence greater than everything and everyone, for the Greeks it was destiny in itself, and even poetic references of this in the Bible with an excerpt from psalms saying that "The Lord sits in the Council of the gods to govern them" implying (which in fact was the case and against what the prophets fought) that the people of Israel also believed in enotheism and that is why he worshiped several gods in addition to the God of Israel, which generated the entire fight in the old testament of the prophets with the people for them to stop worshiping other gods, which in fact makes up a large part if not the majority of the old testament, and how this explanation is the most common throughout the history of humanity, and the one that currently fits best with God of War, I think this is the one they will follow but with the necessary adaptations, as they have historical background for this, in fact, if you read all this you are a myth! LOL!
