Starting up the Verner 5Si, and using a proptach to measure RPMs since the onboard readout was not registering.
This initial run was only up to approx 1150 rpm before getting rough, and some gauges not reading meant we did not push it to higher power.

Looks like the helper barely fits between the leading edge of the wing and the trailing edges of the propeller!

The "romantic" sound of radial always brings to my mind Indiana Jones, days of glory and horror (WW2) and early aviation pioneers (bush pilots).

Lol, good eye. Taht BD-5 actually has quite a lot done, shame it hasn't been worked on in decades.

Sounds sweet, why doesn't the exhaust go to a collector ring like most radials? Aren't you worried about residual hitting finish? Thanks...

This installation was just as a minimum test to fly the engine. We made the exhaust the simplest we could. The factory also test runs the engines using similar straight pipes. The heat and exhaust hasn't been any more of an issue than the short stacks the original VW engine had. There can occasionally be some residue on the side and wing, but that's just the nature of it. Of course, collector rings do work well and we have one for the next installation which has a full cowl.

3 blade prop not fit perfectly to stern engine, but I hope you'll enjoy flying that beauty with engine from Czech. Well done guys.

That's a cool engine, I'd like to put one on the front of my Pitbull gyro. It always makes me laugh when I see some guy feeling exhaust temp with his hand when an engine is so obviously running on all cylinders.
