Every country has their own league like the MLS here in the US. within each country there is a cup tournament thats played by many levels of professional soccer. The top teams in each league qualify for champions league which is all of the top teams from Europe. This is usually the biggest trophy of the year besides the winning the league. Then there is international play, additional tournaments from winning cups. All played simultaneously throughout the year

Messi keeps playing, but he's getting old, so you should definitely follow him and watch some Barcelona and Argentina games before he retires. It's amazing to see his highlights but, believe me, watching the games is just a whole other experience. Some people don't realize this because we get to see Messi week in and week out, but living to see the best player in the history of this sport is a true blessing.

Almost every country around the globe got their own Football Association with several leagues from division one down to 4/5/6, after that you also have some amateur leagues. Every FA got a cup or even more, where clubs from same league or even more divisions(some also with amateur clubs starting) play against each other in knock-out rounds. Now every continent got their own "international cup/s". In europe you have the Champions League, considered as the most competitve tournament, where only the league champions (weaker leagues) or clubs that finished 1-4 (stronger leagues) qualify. They first play in groups of four, but only the best two clubs qualiy for the knock-out stage. Then you have the next european cup calles Euro-League (former Uefa-Cup, or "League of loosers"). About championships... Basically every country has its own championship and cup. The national championship is the one that everyone plays against each other. It works like the NBA regular season. The cup is where the teams knocks the opponents down...works like playoffs. But are two different competitions. There's also the continental competitions. The most important one is the Champions League, in Europe. And there also the national teams competitions that happens every two or four years in general.

I heard a British commentator give his take on the difference between Messi and Ronaldo. "Messi is all about team. Ronaldo is all about Ronaldo." A quick watch of Ronaldo highlights, and you get a sense of the massive ego there. Messi is humble and unassuming, and that has a great appeal for me. I'm not a fan of high paid, ego-tripping professional athletes with their bad boy image and their off the field/court antics with drugs, alcohol, women and all the rest. None of that from Messi. One of the big knocks against professional soccer players is their penchant to take a dive with the slightest contact, screaming and writhing in agony to draw a foul and a yellow card. Messi is famous for NOT doing that! Despite his size, he fights through tackles and contact, and absolutely refuses to go down. He doesn't play-act at being hurt. I admire that! Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are both great players partly because of their physical size and strength. But they are both divas. Ronaldo currently has slightly better stats than Messi. Even so, Messi is a joy to watch with his close ball control, and his ability to consistently take on 2-3-4 players and get a shot off or find a killer pass. In Champions league where 32 best team of all over Europe plays to win the trophy. Where in knockout phase teams play over 2 legs. One game on each team home ground. The total score of both legs is then taken as final score. For example: Barca lost 2-0 to Milan in first leg but then won 4-0 in sec leg. The total score is 4-2. Their is no 2nd leg in final. If their is a draw then the away goals counts. Which means if one team scores more goals then other team in away leg then they will go through. Example: Barca won 2-1 at their home leg But loss to other team by 1-0 at their ground. Now score is 2-2 but the other team have scored in Barca home match so they now will go through.
