Hi Elora, ran across your page and I find it very helpful to future airman.... I am retired AF, and I spent most of my career as a recruiter... don’t know what your plan for the future holds, but if you decide to make the Air Force a career, you should definitely look into being a recruiter.. you present info well, and honest recruiters make the best recruiters... the special duty pay is good and you don’t have to be at a base... I loved it, and you just seem like a natural... take care, Retired MSgt Thomas

There are 2 sides to every story. Check into going to school after you've completed enough service, that way they'll pay for it and extra. The other side of the story is that if you complete your degree, and you chose to, you are eligible to go to OCS to become an officer.
@forreal2398
@forreal2398 4 года назад
@@janfuger1517 And usually u can start out at a higher rank. If u have say an AA or AAS degree as I did when I went into the army years ago I started out as a PFC or E-3. So ur getting paid E-3 wages from from the time to start Basic forward and then ur 1st promotion in the service would be to E4. Is u start with Higher pay so u have more money to work with for retirement savings or if u have to contribute to any college programs as they change how things work. What use to be a GI Bill gave u a certain amount for education once u got out. When I went in what replaced the GI Bill was a matchings funds account. With a limit that u could put in a max. into this account with the military of 100 bucks a month and the gov would do a 2 bucks for every one buck u put in And then now a days I think u can still set up educational Roth IRA's on ur own for example. And in what was available for me for college if I put 100 a month in and they double matched that was what I was going to get in a check from the Gov. every month I was going to school full time. I am not sure what level of college u have to have completed anymore to start at a higher rank or as an E-3 but am guessing an Assoc. degree will get you started there. And after being in for a year then back when I was in the army u would get offered OCS =Officer Candidate School. Which if u pass that means a decent pay raise but if they allow you to start with an AA or AAS degree I think u have a certain amount of years to get ur BA or BS degree so u can keep your officer rank. AND at most bases/posts u can work towards a 4 year college degree and it will be paid for as I understand it or it use to be that way. Also There are some special training that u can get that will raise ur pay at least in the Army and I am assuming that there are like certs in the Air Force. In the Army one of the things u can do to make extra money is got to Jump school which means learning to jump out of a perfectly good air plane and have a parachute take u to the ground. U get so much per jump as I recall from when My dad did it. And u had to successfully complete so many jumps each month I think to keep that certification active. So you can ask the recruiter about if they have any certs that can make u extra money. Going into combat does give u extra pay but I am not sure exactly what qualifies location wise for that. And u will get extra pay if ur stationed overseas which usually means ur in a different country. But when I was in Alaska was considered an overseas station which got me paid more and it added another ribbon for being stationed overseas. Oh and when I was in if u got stationed overseas the amount of time b4 they could rotate u to another base/post was different depending on if u were married and ur spouse was with u or if u were single. One tour at an overseas assng was a year and if u wanted to try to stay there for another tour u had to put in for that a certain amount of time b4 that year ended. I happened to get stationed where I wanted to be and had gotten the state I wanted to be in as a guarantee, something the branch I went into could do. I am not sure how the AF works on that. And if u were married with ur wife and or kids traveling and staying with u as a family unit then and overseas asign is a Two year Tour and it takes u twice as long to qualify for the overseas ribbon than a single person These are some of the things that I remember from growing up in a military family and from when I went in personally. I had an AAS degree in Forestry when I went in. I did VERY WELL on the ASVAB and turned down the chance to even be offered West Point for personal reasons. After a year in service they offered me OCS and asked a Maj. that I coached his son in a sport if he thought I would be a good officer. He didn't answer the question but did say to check out the regs for OCS. Which is what i would tell anyone that was offered OCS to do, no matter how badly they thought they wanted to become and officer. And when u read anything in a reg in the military u NEED to pay attention to every little word no matter how small. Exp. In the Army OCS reg at the time it said They CAN Take into Consideration Ur Schooling. Okay, sounds simple enough right?? Well What training or schooling? My military or my college? I had an AAS degree in Forestry so I could do flow rates for streams, I had my thumb calibrated so I could do a couple simple things and give u an Est. of how many cord or board ft. was in a standing tree. I could do surveying, I could read Aerial Photos and tell u what kinds of trees were in the photos which also means I had an idea what the ground under those trees could be like, say swampy full of moss and soft or high and dry with water nearby or dry for a long ways and could tell u how tall Anything was and give u sizes and again with the trees could tell u how much wood was standing.. I could run a compass and read USGS maps And ID a few other plants that were in the area I went to college so I knew some edibles in the woods. And I happened to have been a state level athlete in five sports so I had to consider that. And I was in Maintenance as my Military schooling. So the question I asked me was Did I think they would make a Maint. Officer or and Infantry officer out of me and I Thought Infantry which is something I didn't want to do. cause remember they get to decide what they want to do with u based on THEIR need. Since I got out I have mentioned this to others that I served with and they all thought that they would have wanted to go the Special Forces route with the Green Berets. Which with some things I had to do growing up and with what I have mentioned I think physically I could have made it but again it was not something I wanted to do. I had a really Good assgn. Got to do almost EVERYTHING I wanted. I got to coach kids on post and in the civilian community year round and got to leave my job anytime when I was coaching at the time I needed and the order was no one was allowed to get in my way. So I was in a plumb for me assgn. I only had three times that company level stuff trumped that for a couple days. Anyway. As a Caution if u are wanting to go into OCS or have been offered it. Read the Reg. and read it very carefully. They are not long. And as the Major I asked about things told me. Any officer that knows u have been offered OCS is supposed to tell u to go for it, weather they think u would make a good officer or not. Note here that also means u are not likely going back to that base if u fail or go back right away after u make it. It could take years or never. So ask people u can TRUST on this decision. Its a Big one. U get better living arrangements usually and u make a lot more than then enlisted. Things to think about.

I started watching your videos a few months ago when I was just thinking about enlisting. You've definitely put me at ease with videos like this, and your other videos about BMT and MEPS and whatnot. Just a couple days ago I swore into the AF Reserves!!! The process took only a MONTH (from the initial interview with my recruiter to actually swearing in)!! I'm set to leave for BMT either at the end of January or beginning of February (specific date hasn't been confirmed yet). I got a signing bonus with the job I locked in, and I'll be an E-3 when I get out of basic!! The decision to enlist is definitely the best one I've ever made.

Good on you for doing the 10% TSP deduction. Starting this early could add up to a VERY LARGE sum once you retire. You can look for the TSP Calculator to see how much you would have when you retire. Good job and keep that up.

TSP defaults to the G fund, move your portfolio around into the S, C, or I funds based on what is going on in the market. There is an awesome app so you can watch your earnings daily (not an official tsp app) and the TSP talk forums website gives great investment info just for tsp users.

Definitely worth noting, depending on your specific squadron or base, you might be entitled to extra money for your duties. When I was a older a1c and into new sra, I was making $1,150 every two weeks while living in the dorms rent free. Because my particular squadron gives incentive pay for different certifications, give full BAS due to my squadron not having enough time to eat inside the facilities on base. Now that I live off base as a single airmen i make about $1600 every two weeks, between my bah and incentive pay. Lots if payment factors depending on where you are stationed and what duty you are performing

BAS, Bacis Allowance for Subsistence is to feed the military member only....it has nothing to do with feeding the family. You could be married and have 10 kids and BAS would be the same. SGLI is your life insurance. Splitting the rent with 3 other people is great, IF....they are dependable. Only you know if that is the case. Because if one moves, or transfers, the rent is the same and the landlord won't care, they just want their money. The biggest problem with roommates can be food.....and how you split that up. Most go with "this is my food" that is your food. But as we all know, some times roommates will "dip in" to someone else's food. If you have good, respectful roommates then great. Many people draw up "roommate contracts" and sign them so everyone agrees to the "rules" in writing. Before you think I'm being petty, I had a roommate who grilled up and ate two ribeyes I was marinating but he told me I could have his package of bologna in trade. Yeah no......
@tidefanyankee2428
@tidefanyankee2428 5 лет назад
Some people's pay is predicated on what you do. If you are an EOD tech, you get explosive materials pay. If you fly, you get flight pay. etc..... All of these are taxable. Pretty much any extra you get with the word "pay" behind it, is taxable as a general rule. Some states don't tax their active duty folks who aren't stationed in that state (their home state) and some states don't tax (state tax) people who are on active duty...period. Another thing to consider (in regard to money), especially if you live off base is do you have a dependable vehicle to get to and from work. I know this is a bit off topic, but if you're stationed in Grand Forks, N.Dak, you better have a garage or you're going to need to plug your vehicle in (block heater)....and right along with that is car insurance. It varies greatly depending on what state you live in, as do gas prices.

I would encourage everyone in the military to do the TSP as soon as you get to your duty station. I wish I hadn't waited until the last minute to do it (I waited until I had been in for 3 years).

Pay is not bi-weekly. You get paid on the first and the fifteen of the month. If you want you can have all the money come out on the first. For BAH, it is not whether you are married or not. It depends if you have a dependent that being a spouse and/or child. Dual military couples, only one will get the dependent BAH rate. Some areas you deploy to are taxable. Great video by the way. Would he get paid for BAH that I could have access to pay his portion of the bills while in training? I don't get how families do it other wise since you don't get your paycheck until after basic training, right? We would wait til after tech school for me and our cat to move wherever he gets stationed just because it would not be smart to move our entire lives twice since you usually don't get stationed where you do tech school at. I'd like some input for anybody and everybody!

I'd say stay single and stay focused. Military life is tough on relationships. People need to be cut from the same cloth and be strong enough to go long periods without physical contact from their partner. Most can't do it. Remember, the mission comes first. Military could care less about your personal life. You are just a number to them. Good luck, though. Hope things work for you.

I wasn't in the airforce but in the Army some of the Bases were easier to live on then others. The medical base in San Antonio was the best base to live on that I knew of, the other bases were pretty minimal for resources. On the medial base the PX was bigger than Walmart and had better items to choose from, the grocery store was huge also, there was a movie theater free to all privates, arcade but video games cost money, music rooms free with free instrument check outs, drums, keyboards, guitars, someone was telling me they also had free boats to check out, jet ski's, and other rec equipment but I never did check any out I was only there for training. So if you want to be a medic probably working at a hospital has its perks if your on a good medical base some are combined Navy, Airforce, Army, I was only at the Army Medical Base in San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston. I used to spend my check on cabs a lot and luckily the Mess Hall was like a high end Delicatessen on the medical base.

@EloraJean
@EloraJean 6 лет назад
That question would best be answered by a recruiter, as I personally don't know a whole lot about bonuses and incentives. I can tell you what I've heard: bonuses are not always around, it's just sometimes if a career field if hurting they will offer an amount of money to get people. I think there are a small handful of jobs that pretty much always have bonuses, like special operations or jobs like those. Bonuses aren't paid in full, either, from what I hear. Once you complete the training (if you do) you start to get payments along with your paycheck. Sometimes you can also be offered a re-enlistment bonus, if your career field needs more people. I know one of my photojournalism instructors got lucky and was able to do that, a couple thousand dollars. Most jobs don't have bonuses just going in though.

The Air Force would be your priority, you couldn't be a full-time student. You can definitely take classes and still get a degree, but you wouldn't be a "normal" student. Kelly Gleissner you are unable to move out of the dorms until you rank up to E-4 or reach 3 years time in service, you may be able to move out early in the circumstances the dorms become overcrowded but it’s not guaranteed. You will not receive BAH until you are asked to leave the dorms. If you leave on your own choice, you won’t make BAS or BAH until you would have moved out otherwise.

Michelle S I’m pretty sure it’s like the Navy. So it’s E-4 over 4 years with the recommendation of your commanding officer. Or like she said if there are no barracks you’ll be told to find a place out in town or temporarily put in a hotel.
@EloraJean
@EloraJean 6 лет назад
I am currently an E-3, and you're partially correct. If you are single, the average time you'll have to wait to move off-base is about three years, or until you're E-4. However, there are instances where dorms will become overcrowded and they will allow people to leave if they show they can budget and afford to live off-base. There's a wait list of people to get out of the dorms, so if they become overcrowded they look at those people first. If you're older and have lived on your own before, you might be able to make some sort of argument that living in the dorms is of no benefit to you, and you would thrive elsewhere. You can always go to your first sergeant and try to work with them to get off base before you rank up or serve a certain amount of time. I think it all depends on where you are!
