The mandolin is quite a rare instrument, and there is - by far - less repertoire written for it than for, say, the violin. Avi Avital turns that which might be considered a disadvantage into the strength of his work: He constantly arranges existing repertoire for his instrument and even writes his own pieces - thus being in constant, fruitful conversation with music history.
