The problem I see is all those controllers makes the desk look very cluttered. Just me but I cannot stand clutter. I would simplify. Each person has a right to do what they want. Love your videos. Keep them coming.
@@vigneshkarthikeyan8174 No. I would not keep both if I was using Pro Tools exclusively, but because I float between several DAW's (Nuendo, Reaper and Studio One), I'd probably keep it around. The ideal setup for me would be the S1 and the SSL UC1. I love the SSL channel strips and the UC1 makes using them a breeze.
I have a 10+ y/o Presonus Faderport v1 (already replaced the fader and cleaned inside at least 4 times), I use most buttons quite a lot but I don't remember a time I actually used the fader. Also it makes noise. Over the years I have been looking at nice control units but never really felt like buying any, simply because I'm most likely never going to mix using the control box, with over 25 years using mouse and keyboard I don't see how can I be faster than that. I feel like consoles have their place in recording studios but not in composition / sound design studios. Not in the modern world. Maybe only if you want to manually automate multiple things at a time which honestly never had to.
I've had the faderport v2 and mouse for years with studio one. It just works every time. Faderport on the left, mouse to the right, is a great workflow especially for editing and automation. Quick... easy... doesn't clutter the desk and just get the job done. I gave up on Avid many years ago. The equipment I had from Avid was made obsolete with no ongoing support. Money down the drain. Never again would I purchase anything from Avid. Avid couldn't care less about their customers. Some of their equipment is way overpriced for what it's designed to do. And doesn't necessarily make the workflow quicker. Avid is smart because they know the consumer needs that dopamine hit. Even those who talk down about the company just keep going back for more. And they most likely don't even need the equipment. They just gotta have it some some reason.
I have both..sometimes I wonder the same thing but part of working out of the box is maintaining that tactile feel in your work flow so I'd say keep it. Additionally, I'd argue the technological obsolescence factor is low with the s1 so it SHOULD hold it's value.
Hey Barry, I just purchased Avid dock and S3 to pair up with my Softube MK3... I"m tired of Studio One crashing so I'm switching to yep ProTools.... I have M1 Mac ... do you have any suggestions for perpetual license version of ProTools? my interface is Antelope Synergy core pro 8 and summing through Dangerous Dbox plus... any advise or suggestions? your opinion is golden... Thanks!
I've had a dock for a few weeks now and I'm cautiously optimistic about its utility. However, the 2 things I'm missing are the ability to quickly adjust my high-level groups/auxes/summing folders (drums, perc, bass, vox, etc.), as well as the ability to spill the contents of these across faders for intuitive intra-section balancing. For this I think the S1 would be a good match.
I have a Windows Configuration setup that opens all the sends so I can easily see them and then tuck them back away when I’m done. I also control it with a shortcut key.
I'm just on keyboard and mouse and want to get the Apple Magic Pad to see how that go. Like the new Softube just wish they would have put one fader on it too. What do you think about the new Icon P1 Nano?
I am using a console 1 mk3 (terrific) and a faderport v2 for stop - start etc. Also, I am trying to use a streamdeck for extra control (talking about glorified keyboard shortcuts). Pretty happy with this, though I would like a conttol service with even more direct access to functions than the faderport, which has many functions under the shift key. The Dock might eventually replace faderport and streamdeck, but I’ll have to wait for studio one to support Eucon, and I fear that it will take too much desk space. All luxury-thoughts of course, as the faderport and console 1 already make a darn good couple.
Good point/video. Thanks for posting. I have an off topic question to ask. Feel free to ugnore it if not interested in answering. How far are you from your adams A77 and how big is the room your in? Thanks
I would keep it. I had the SSL UF8 and the S1 is way better and much simpler. But I personally do my automation with faders and and do a lot of automation with plugins. The S1 makes it supper easy.
So I have the Apple m4 iPad Pro which is 13" in size and would prefer using the iPad in Landscape position as opposed to straight up and down. So I think that it would fit the S1 but not the Dock. As desk space is limited I was thinking that the S1 would be the better controller for me but your video threw a wrench into the works. If the Dock is that much better I guess that I should leave the Dock empty and put my iPad on a stand next to the Dock....which isn't as appealing as mounting the iPad on the controller. Please give me your thoughts on this. If you think that S1 would be more appropriate for my situation, how much do you want for yours?
I read your post wrong on the previous comment so I deleted it. Not sure about the iPad Pro on the S1, not sure it’s wide enough for it on landscape, I suggest asking over at the DUC.
I'm not currently in the market for, nor do I ever see myself wanting to get into using a control surface. Do I see the benefit? Of course! Not knocking it at all. But I'm on an analog console here and I prefer to do individual passes one by one to bake it into my tracks before mixdown. I'll usually then do broad strokes on a master using in the box automation. If you're getting everything you need done using the dock, then I'd sell the other and use the $$$ for something else. But that's just my opinion. Lol
The Dock it’s awesome, maybe you don’t need to get rid of the s1, one cool workflow is creating different layouts to map the s1 as you like, and can be recalled easily with shift and the color buttons on the bottom. I mean the s1 is really cool for fader control, anything else i get it done on the dock.
I'm in the search now for a controller setup and have to get over aesthetics mostly and just focus on what will work best for me. I find now the AVID controller is bit to bulky and over priced for what they do. If I had both the dock and S1, the S1 would no longer be worth the money at all as I will use it for the things you said you are now only using it for. Which you can get for much cheaper and a little more compact elsewhere. I myself will always do better with faders as it's so important to change volume on more than one part at once and jump to a another channel for adjustment in a split second without thinking. That's the bettered work flow with it that you are looking for with any controller and in that you also mix differently. You start to mix with ears more. I'm currently looking at ICON for the main controllers of fader and main hub, what the dock would be. P1-X for faders and P1-Nano for the main hub. But also looking at having the softube console 1 MK3, and currently with no information on the new fader system to accompany this one I'm thinking aesthetics... softube either side of just a P1-nano. With the added D5 to the P1-nano I can control all plugins the console cant and so it'll only be a stream deck missing from the equation to complete it. For video I like controllers too and will have a pull out tray for those. And so it'll al be neat. Analogue I'm currently starting by using only recallable units and so control of those will be from the sweet spot on the P1-nano.... hoping Softube can partner with WesAudio later maybe??? But for now, analogue will be kept out off sight and everything will be used via controller. It does take a long time before you switch from keyboard and mouse to mostly controllers. You have a physical habit to get over... you end up switching back to keyboard and mouse constantly becuase it has ben ingrained into you for years and years prior. But controllers improve work flow... and is that a big thing for everyone?... only if time is money
While I really don't want to influence your decision one way or the other, if you do infact decide to sell the s1 I would be interested in buying it. I am currently in school for audio engineering and I have been saving up to get my own dock and s1. Plus, not only would it help me achieve my goal quicker buying one second hand. It would also be just so cool to own a piece of gear that was previously owned by an idol that actually helped inspire me to dive into my passion and go for my goals within the space. I was a basement mixer for over 8 years, learning everything from youtube, and I finally decided to go for it last year. Honestly, your channel has had a significant role in my decision. So I just think that would be such a cool story. All that being said, I still don't want to influence your decision, i just wanted to say that if you do end up moving on from the s1, please keep me in mind! Justin

@Yourweakminds don't know but, maybe something smaller in the future. I had the command 8 years back, and I like the simplicity of it. The S3 is great, but when o don't use it for a while, I kind of forget where some features are.
