Just had to ditch my UA gear because of my needs for analog inputs and outs. With only 8 channels ADAT and 8 analog ins with 22 outs was not scalable enough for me. I had bought a Ferro Fish Pulse 16 MX to help my needs and from there i ended up ditching UA and bought an RME UFX III
The RME eq is really good in my opinion. My complaint with the effects would be it's too hard to see some details. A refresh visually and sonically would be nice.
It‘s true that the initial obstacle to understand TotalMix is a bit higher, even (or especially?) when you come from a classic mix desk background. But after you got the concept it‘s easy. And another thing is: I don‘t know how to change the actual GUI to a more easy interface without losing functionality. Okay, they could have been implement a total n00b mode where you get graphical bubbles asking you: „what do you wanna record: Mic/Guitar/Bass/Voice?“ and providing presets for the most usecases. But this a truckload of work maybe for a group of users which may not be the main target group.
My Genelec 7050Cs are an integral part of my product completion result, Admittedly mostly sales related so the check writers feel what they will in a club Of course this is genre related but lots of my clientele over the last 15 years or so have been home producers that are psyched about their laptop FL Studio or Garage Band masterpiece and want to take it to the top level without a Berkeley degree or emptying their piggy banks on “all that analog gear” that so many of us love to buy I agree with you when mixing I don’t turn them on I never mix with cans only use them to reference “those” areas that give my older ears trouble, I will use visual tools, scopes that I know will translate true But yeah you bring in potentials or talent that want to hear that finished bit A little mood lighting , multiple displays, mechanical mixer sliding all over the place, a frivolous sweep test, then the mid or far fields come on with the subs, up the level a few Db And smiles abound Often I’ll pass around a djtt Midi Fighter 3D and program the gyroscope and compass to allow folks to hold and simply tilt the midi controller to hear different room IRs or filter controls including those 20db earth shakers and soon they are selling themselves Composing whole show ideas down to the lighting right in front on us It’s the entertainment business after all and I personally don’t even enjoy EDM but you can’t argue with results and word of mouth keeps me working
Unfortunately, I’ve not always been great at keeping pictures. I’ve regretted that so many times in my life. My best friend is outstanding at it, he has pictures of us going back to our childhood days. So I have to go look at his pictures to relive them. I wish I’d been better!
Don't want to be the smart-ass here, but the VX should not be confused with a Neve 73 or 84. It is the successor of the VR which I have been mixing on. It has a sound of its own. Just saying.

Back in 2021 I bought an Arturia Audiofuse rev 2 interface, which as you said was great and peerless for the value, sound quality and features it provided at the price point. However, literally 2 days after the purchase my unit bricked itself completely into a boot loop. Went back to the dealer and was redirected to the supplier, which was in slight disbelief of what happened. Had to reluctantly switch back to my old, lower quality interface. Quite a morale hit after saving up for gear like that (I was flat broke back then). Fast forward two weeks later I got a call that they were unable to fix it locally and opted to replace my unit. We cracked open the box of a new unit, powered it on, and bam right there the phantom power didn't work, software was glitchy trying to recognize the unit's serial, and a whole bunch more, and when we tried to update the firmware it too, glitched out and basically bricked itself. It wasn't too long after that we found out the entire early Rev 2 batch was defective (Malaysia if you want context, Arturia). I was then offered a used (as display), rev 1 unit as a replacement by the supplier, because I mentioned I had to work and couldn't wait, and I decided to take that unit. However it wasn't without problems too! The left side of both pairs of speaker outs were 3dB softer than the right, the pad was always on boot mode, the dim and mute row of buttons eventually broke and FELL into the enclosure, which I had to open up and jankily support em with some rubber erasers from the bottom, headphone amps had crosstalk issues at high volumes, the volume encoder knob skips in huge steps and sometimes in the reverse way causing sudden explosive volume while turning the knob down. Also it runs really damn worryingly hot with no real way to self cool if overheated. Lastly sometimes upon reconnecting the USB it'll not make sound, even tho the device is recognized in the software, and will just miraculously work after a few more restarts and desperate software reinstalls. 3 years later I had it ran via SPDIF to my monitors, the input 1 mic pre died, and I've since upgraded to an MT48 (which runs hot too but at least it has an emergency fan). All in all it was an interface that got me through so many songwriting, production and recording sessions that wouldn't have been possible without the features present on the unit, and surprisingly the quality holds up real well to higher end gear too (which is insane considering the amt of features and price). However, it's safe to say that I'll never buy another piece of Arturia audio gear, it's just not worth the risk. Their software plugins are great and I use them daily, I've heard great things about their analog synths too, but God do I wish to stay far far away from another one of those experiences. Just writing this as I realized I've never shared this story anywhere before, you might have a completely different experience but never hurt to have more context to consider as it's not always about the price and the features on the sheet. @BarryJohns amazing it took this long for your channel to show up on my YT feed but really glad it did. Actually I think the internet gods were listening to my mic that wasn't muted since this video showed up on my feed right after I had a convo about this very thing with a good friend of mine. Your outtakes were priceless BTW ;-) Admittedly I too am easily sold on the latest stuff, whether it be hardware or software. Ashamed to say that I own 95% of the Wave plugins and pay the WUP every year religiously since I had a desktop and a laptop so I could have two licenses. Well that ended this year. The question I have is this - when you have a project that you've worked on for a client and two years later they want a revision but you've uninstalled all of the plugins that you used on that mix or whatever (I also do video production), what the heck do you do now? There is nothing worse than having to figure out what you did two years ago (or even a month for that matter). Love to hear your thoughts. thanks
totaly agree. I use and love RME since 2008 but the UCXII is not as good as my old trusty fireface 400. The phone output jack is showing connection problems, sometimes channel 5 doesnt work (I have to reboot the whole unit, meaning I have to reboot pro tools...), the rvbs, delays and compressors are not good either. It is a shame, I still love RME (although Total Mix could have been simplified), but they really should fix these issues.
Have you tried the Behringer clones of the Neve gear? I've heard a few people say things like the knobs/rings are back to front and pop off. Also higher noise floor.
I had an RME Fireface 800 10 years ago and to my experience, Total Mix was so unfriendly for my little brain, I thought I was just dumb. That's only when I sold it 6 years ago and bought and Apollo X4 that I realized I wasn't that dumb, it's just that RME sucks at making a user-friendly UI and workflow. I would be thinking of going back to RME if they would just get their sh!t together on that front.
If you watch my videos that I made on how to use total mix, I think you’ll change your mind. It is incredibly powerful. But like you said getting a basic understanding is not easy which is why I made the videos which make it easy.
@@BarryJohns At the moment I'm still satisfied with my Apollo X4 but if I ever decide to jump back into RME, I'll definitely watch them for sure. Thank you for doing this, it my sway some people into buying RME. Have you thought about repackaging them and selling them you videos?

I talk about subjects that are on my mind, I fully understand that not everyone’s going to appreciate every video. That said, the Carbon is a great interface, but has way too many limitations for my workflow. And then there’s a fact that I just won’t use ProTools anymore unless I have have to.
Beside Barry's excellent videos, I found the videos from Synthax Audio UK very helpfull. And every Totalmix video tutorial should start with learning how to remove unwanted/unused in an outputs from the user interface. That makes Totalmix so much more accessible for beginners. Btw, did you know you don't have use Totalmix for RME interfaces? It's not mandatory. In every daw a RME interface pops up as an audio device (sometimes after installing a driver)., and you can work with it in your daw like any other interface.
Both RME PCIe MADI cards have had strange mechanical design issues. For the first one the choice of breakout connector was insane. For the FX the expansion PCB is only attached to the mounting bracket at one end, so the whole thing flexes into the computer chassis when you put the slightest pressure on the connectors.
@@BarryJohns The actual MADI part works well. One thing I will say though is that having to remap channels at different sample rates due to multiplexing is a pain. The Ferrofish ADAT implementation somehow avoids this.
I had a UFX3 for about 6 months and i loved it. Totalmix FX are just straight up for tracking and nothing else. I traded up for a Prism Titan strictly on conversion and yes, it’s better in that regard and the mic pres are the best interface pres I’ve ever heard. I want totalmix back though with my whole heart. It wasn’t hard. I think after a day of messing with it now it’s hard to not have it.
I actually don’t use total mix for tracking very often, I use it for many other things daily. Actually, I would say the tracking aspect of it, is the least significant thing that you can do with total mix. It’s the most powerful system I’ve ever seen, and I’ve tried a lot of them!
I use Zero Latency Monitoring feature in Nuendo / RME with the Nuendo monitoring mixer. This allows Nuendo to control RME Total mix mixer with the Nuendo monitor mixer,therefore Zero Latency. This bypasses any plugins that as the monitored audio is not going through the pc. Great video, magic of Totalmix.
I can explain total mix in a single sentence. Total Mix is a matrix mixer with an input centered viewpoint. You are always looking at the inputs and the outputs are always in the drop down menu. Anyone trying to get their head around total mix really just needs to understand what a matrix mixer is and then understand the viewpoint at which they are approaching it. I think RME videos about it are horrible and yours are really good but 30 minutes to explain a 30 second concept I think still misses the mark. Understand a matrix mixer and the GUI they prefer and that's pretty much total mix.
That’s an accurate statement, however, very few people that strictly do audio for recording purposes have had any exposure to that type of workflow. If someone comes from a live situation to where they’re using that type of workflow, it’s easy to understand. For me, it never had anything to do with the input in the outputs, it was more routing than anything else.
I still use mine with a pcie card. Remember if it's on an Intel then use the one chip if its on amd use the other firewire chip. If it the RME starts slowly replace caps in powersupply. Mine is still solid and I've been using it daily since it was first released. Blow the dust off and enjoy.
Such a stupid thing to do... no interfaces are thunderbolt 4, they are all 3 and down... who decided this?... someone only thinking about thunderbolt hubs?
How not to buy a car you had for a second, a third time? However it goes, married or not, try to avoid the same mistakes, like raising a third finger to the world while taking off with your flight thinking that a good audio wouldn't reflect the image on the clean window. I don't know. Namastè.
I switched from Motu to RME because of the driver stability (Win 10,11). In combination with Cubase = perfect, no more frozen DAW and no more broken recording session. But as always with German technology, you have to dig in, just compare e.g. with Cubase, I have similar experience. I am already working in a German company and this is an overall approach, so nothing new for me. But I fully understand the point, they should update the learning content to be more in line with the modern world and the effects are obsolete, except the quite usable compressor.
I have the RME Babyface v1. I stopped using it as I couldnt get the signal in without digital distortion due to the original mixing software being such a pain in the arse to use. My Zoom H6 and Line 6 Helix was plug and play, I've ended up using those instead even though its inferior. Interesting to see their FX havent progressed. They should do a deal with Valhalla

When all the units are on and nothing playing, they make an incredible noise together… Not a good one ha ha. The gate setting on the dynamics plug-in in RME mix does the trick nicely on all those channels. I haven’t had anyone be uninspired by the verb, neither singers I’ve been working with, nor myself singing and playing brass/ string instruments. I admit I don’t think the reverb is great, but for my uses as just something to listen to when tracking it has been fine. I do have a couple hardware units I could use if Barry (or someone else with similar concerns ) wants to come over and sing a track though ha ha 😆👍 kurtzweil ksp8 or lex pcm 91 FTW 😍 If RME were to really up the game on that software, would it mean less instances I think that is the advantage of a lighter plug-in… These MADI systems in theory can handle hundreds and hundreds of tracks... now I am just brainstorming.
