I've been a fanboi of ProTools for over 20yrs...been through all the iterations except HDX (mbox, 002, HD Accel TDM) and have spent a boatload of money for hardware and software over the years. I stopped endorsing Avid over a year ago and am gearing up to switch everything over to Reaper. I just can't believe how many features just plain exist in Reaper that I've wanted for over 10 years from Avid. Automatic color coding and tracks being literally anything you want (mono, stereo, midi, instrument, 7.4.2...it doesn't care) it just makes way more sense for me. I feel as though Avid just keeps hammering more nails in the coffin and is bent on burying the company. Anyway...such a satisfying rant to watch from start to end with a few great chuckles along the way 🙂

The basic workflow of Studio One is 'drag and drop' but there are also keyboard shortcuts and macros that can speed workflow. The Midi instruments and plugins that come with it are great.

First DAW I learned and used for years was Pro Tools. But since I used Pro Tools in a former friend's studio, I lost access when friendship broke. When I had to pay 30 bucks a month, or over 600 for a perpetual license, I hopped onto LUNA, since it is free with Universal Audio interfaces. First I was stoked, but then rage quit due to bugs, and the lack of (to me) crucial features. Render In Place, ARA support & Folder Tracks to name a few big ones. Then I tried Logic. Really liked the optics. But also lacked ARA support. I wanted to instantly access notes in Melodyne, and use VocAlign without having to play through all the audio. Instant, adaptive capture. Saves you SOOO much time. Then I found Studio One! And I stayed. Amazing DAW. And Melodyne and VocAlign is even deeply integrated as a function, that can be non-destructively applied. The amount of features is insane. The guys seem to be thinking of everything. And you can go very very deep with the DAW. Admittedly...out of comfort...I use LUNA at least for recordings.

For mixing I think that Reaper is one of the best options, not only for the price but overall. It is amazingly light on the cpu usage, it has a easy way to create folders/ Groups, fully customizable tool bar and scripts you can make, spectral analysis and coloring on the waveforms, you can automate every parameter etc. Maybe if you create music there are a lot of options with more midi instruments etc included, but with a cost less than a tech support call for pro tools, I can't complain. I ve learned on Pro tools at the university and never saw them again, I've worked with Cubase at local studios, I've tried studio one....But when my old computer couldn't run a mix with a few channels , I've put Reaper in it and I could work again. Since then I am a Reaper user at home and I use it also in one local studio I work sometimes (since it was the most reliable for recording there). I also have Logic Pro for the midi, the drummer, spatial audio etc, but I prefer (I'm more used to it) Reapers workflow and the fact that I can open almost any type of plugin and not only AU (vst 32bit, vst 64bit, AU, vst for M1 Macs all running at the same time with reapers own ''translation'')

Same here, when I first seen Reaper I was turned off by how it looked, but when I spent some time actually using it and realizing how I can make it work exactly the way I want it to I fail in love with it!

I try to defend Pro Tools all the time, but my patience with AVID is wearing thin… When asked by newcomers, I tell them to spend 200 on Logic and they’ll be good to go. Always great to hear your thoughts and opinions, Matthew.

AAX is such a clusterfuck it almost requires a different video. Part of the reason PT is so unreliable is because nothing is ever designed for AAX - the licensing is cost prohibitive for companies. Everything gets adapted to AAX later.

I’m with you, while hedge funds certainly have earned their reputation, they are not all evil! Wouldn’t it be cool to learn that they wanted to buy avid so they could infuse it with better customer support and they actually turn avid around and PT back into the industry standard?! Seems unlikely, but absolutely within the realm of possibility! Fingers crossed indeed!🤞🤞🤞

Thank you for saying it out loud "Protools is NOT the industry standard" anymore. Nobody is disputing it's history or importance to digital music. There's so many more better DAWs to choose from now. I guarantee a company will knock PT out of the High end studio market by offering high track count integrated hardware/software. I think presonus could do it with studio one it will just take a lot of money to pull off.

That was a right down to earth description of PT, very well said. I have only been a user since version 10 and at that time PT with an HD rig seemed to be the only thing that I could use to record through my console and be able to punch in and out without to much noticeable latency. The combo of hardware and software took care of latency in an efficient way. Before that I was using a RayDat card RME to send and return up to 32 tracks and the latency was terrible. Also the pops and clicks and other digital noise was rotten. I still have the rig, updated the software to 2019 then stopped. Does the Thunderbolt / USB3 protocol sort out all the latency issues now, especially for punching in and out. If it does then dropping PT would be a great. Thanks very much Mathew for a great video.

I agree, the standard Digi comp & Lofi are pretty nice - luckily AIR is technically third party, still enjoying it even though I left PT behind a long time ago

I got a Carbon recently and think it runs Pro Tools runs great on it. I love S1 also, and would probably have stuck with it, but since S1 6 came along, it has been crashing so much, particularly when editing. I’ve ended up producing in Studio One and mixing in PT. Not ideal, but since I produce and mix in separate sessions, it ends up working out.

If you have used Pro Tools and got used to its keyboard short cuts you can switch to Studio One and enable the same shortcuts on it so you don't have to learn a whole lot of new stuff.

That's a really inflated statement that keeps being thrown around... the key commands are basic at best. I was excited to try that when I imported the settings and found it utterly useless. False advertising is an understatement with that

@@danymalsound Fair comment, I'm sorry to hear that. I've never used ProTools and I just took the claim at face value. My understanding was that Studio One mimicked Protools key commands if you choose that option not that you could import them from Protools.

I found it 50/50. I've played around with Studio One and some of the workflow translates and some doesn't. I think ultimately it's like anything - just gotta use it and get used to it.

Your comments are spot on haha, it's like Stockholm Syndrome... I REALLY want to love Pro Tools, I've used it everyday for the past 10 years but you're right, I think about changing every day and I'm not sure I can in good faith recommend it to someone new to audio production. A lot of the issues could be forgiven if they simply had better (or any?) customer service, I'm not sure I've ever gotten a response from them for any question I've had

0:52 Selection does kind of apply to DAW, as far as the plugins they come bundled with. Though not must-haves, it is nice when stock DAW plugins do integrate well and give you the tools you need right OOTB and that adds to the overall experience with the DAW. I actually think the bundled instruments are pretty good. DB-33, Mini Grand, Vacuum all sound great and Structure comes with some decent synth sounds as well. I'm sure other DAW's have better, but you can totally make legit tracks with the AIR stuff. I run PT 2020.6 on Intel/Mojave (6-core Xeon) and I find it very stable. I almost never have beachballs, or HW buffer overruns... only towards the end of a session with tracks loaded with plugins, which is to be expected with an older Mac like mine. I just print sub mixes to free up resources. If I had 12 cores I would be fine all the way through. I've actually gotten used to the MIDI in Pro Tools. What it lacks is good drum editing functionality like in Cubase, where you can name the note #'s kick, snare, etc. Much easier to see which notes are the parts of the drum kit. But for keys and strings it's fine imo.

Telling it like is ✊🏾, Migrated to Logic, prolly the most stable DAW and super optimised for Apple since it’s the same company so it can handle anything you throw at it provided you got a decent mac. Best stock plugins and instruments and best price. Of course for beat making, FL and Ableton are a little more flexible but Logic is still up there with them.

I started on Ableton and liked it but then I had some issues where I was hearing stuff coming through even though I had muted the tracks (this was Ableton 9) then I got Presonus Studio One AKA 'Studio One' when I saw someone in a video saying that Ableton was more a DAW for creating than mixing. I started on Studio One 4 Professional and I'm now on Studio One 6 Professional (they do cut down versions that are cheaper with fewer features e.g Studio One Artist) and I'm very happy with it.

Great video! In the beginning of my engineering journey I fell in love with Pro Tools. Workflow is amazing(as far as where everything is and the use of shortcuts). However, when producing music, I always leaned to Logic Pro. then, I would find myself recording and mixing in Logic Pro lol which led me to cease my Pro Tools subscription. Like you said, I think it'll all depend on the user's situation. Lol yea, you find yourself not recommending the very DAW that you use to anyone else, but it's not bad for you because...you're used to it...for about 20 years at that! lol. Anyone new to the game of music production doesn't need Pro Tools, for there are several other DAWs easily available at different price points. However, if Pro Tools is a DAW that someone has been using for a while, and they're used to it, I don't see the reason to switch. At the end of the day, it's all about preference and you gotta pick and choose your battles with the different prices, support, accessibility, and workflows of each DAW. Love your videos! Small hot take: Anyone thinks UAD is becoming the 2nd coming of Avid? LOL idk

I have 2 studio setups ,One with an avid carbon and one with a ntp core 256,my avid carbon nerver gives me error messages when using protools? Is it better to use avid nterface?

Agree with you 101% on this matter. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I use ProTools only when I really have to, but the weird (video world derived & photo editing world alike) "playlist" layer system, unlike other DAWs, is really unnatural if one came from tape - tape records & runs horizontally, in linear fashion, if you edit a part you move it around, not above/below. Oh, and PTs infinte menus & submenus for settings, the "We are alone in this world" AAX plugin non-standard stubborness, and the abysmal file naming system with binary logic instead of musical or user logic. Yeah, they're certainly not getting any monthly rent from me. 🤷🏼‍♂️😉

I've tried them all. I'm certified in most. Ableton is the only way to go in my opinion. Close few others include, Cubase & Reaper. One to look out for is Davinci Resolve (mark my words). It's a video editing software currently, with the ability do Atmos, 5.1, or Stereo mixing, also syncing to time code so you can do a video right next to the audio. For this changing world where we will soon need to adjust for, this will revolutionaize. The mixer is still a little basic but has everything you need and with a few more updates, which they are pumping out like no tomorrow, I see this being on the forefront. 🤙

For music production I completely agree. I feel this video should have at least mention that if you work in the film industry, ProTools IS the industry standard. I think that if you want to go that route, you should at least know how to use it. It's a valuable skill.

Oh my goodness I’ve been using Pro Tools 10 on a Mac OS 10 Maverick since 2014. With PT 10 I’m stuck with a 32 bit system so I can’t download anything anymore like a badly needed lufs meter or pitch tuning plug in. My computer has been super reliable for years with absolutely no problems but that could certainly go bad suddenly. My fear is that if things crash and go wrong I won’t have access to my individual PT sessions & tracks anymore. After all I’ve heard about Avid and how things have changed I doubt that I will purchase the PT DAW again. Subscriptions by DAW companies strike me as openly robbing customers of their money by forcing them to pay in perpetuity. Thanks for your assessments on Pro Tools and your knowledge in general Matt… You’re one of the best on RU-vid. 😊

@@andreasaldal415 You misunderstood my message, I said that I wouldn’t go to the Avid subscription model if my present PT 10 or computer failed. I enjoy working in Pro Tools 10 but the funny thing is when I first got it it came with an M -Audio interface. 😂 It was a sales package at Sweetwater of PT 10 & M-Audio together but I had to call them up because there was a big delay in getting the interface unit sent to me in the mail. Once I set it all up I haven’t had any problems with it at all in the 9 years I’ve had it…

Yup... I learned on it, used it for a lot of projects, but I jumped off the train when the subscription thing hit and my last full license was a 2016 one. I still have it installed to dig through my old projects or whatever, but my mains are now Cubase for writing and recording, Studio One for mastering (Seriously? Nobody else ever thought adding DDP export was a good idea???) And Reaper for live shows and band practices.

I switch from pro tools to Logic. Only things i like about pro tools is audio editing and its mixer view which is not bad on Logic either. Over all, i think i did good job switching to Logic.

We did a complete electronic album in Pro Tools about 10 years ago (including Midi)... a complete nightmare! Spoke in person to a Rep of Avid about all these issues. Only answer was... we are working on it. We use PT for recording, mixing and mastering only. Composing NO WAY! But the editing is still the best, to be honest. So we stick to it for now.

I bought into Pro Tools while taking college classes. I just missed buying a perpetual license when they switched to subscription only so I decided to rent it. Fast forward a couple of years: the perpetual license is available for purchase but it’s expensive. They also stopped giving student discounts. My subscription just renewed. I am at a crossroads. Most of my work has been done using Pro Tools. I will probably ultimately end up getting Reaper which was my first DAW. I might also look for a used computer with a perpetual version of Pro Tools already installed.

Ive been thinking a lot about using logic to produce and pro tools to record, mix and master recently. Logic is great but the speedy hotkey fueled workflow of tracking with pro tools and how customizable everything is (especially the routing) is pretty amazing imo do you think thats worth it or should i stay full logic? ive already tried ableton, cubase and fl on past projects but those werent really my thing

A large part of why I'm still in Pro Tools is because I'm super fast. Been using it for 20 years. I reckon that Logic probably has equally fast hotkeys, I just don't know them. So it's hard for me to advise.

I was expecting this one from a long time ago, and even roughly discussed this with you a few years ago. I think a good summary of you using Pro Tools but not recommending it is because you have a significant legacy with the software and many of your projects are just hosted in that DAW. Let alone the fact that you often go to big recording facilities and work with a lot of different recording/mixing engineers that do that as well. Not that hypocritical, in my opinion, since it's fairly implicit that you'd change to another platform if you shouldn't had to deal with the scenarios I just described. On the other hand, as you know, I went to audio school and learned everything in Pro Tools, I even composed/produced/mixed/mastered my own music within Pro Tools and although MIDI was an entire nightmare I ended up getting used to the workflow but never agreed with the pricing nor the customer service and its proselytism. I got so used that I've been trying to switch DAWs for at least 6 years but haven't been able to do so (besides, I'm working on another different industry and I don't produce music so often anymore). With that said, if you were to change to a different DAW, let's say S1 (that came with a control surface that I still have packed in its box LOL). How'd you do it? I mean, there are tons of things from tempo maps to grid/spot/shuffle modes, smart tool, grabber tool, trim tool, beat detective and/or elastic audio, tab to transient and whatnot very specific of Pro Tools that feels kinda overwhelming to translate to another software. I'm eager to know your thoughts on this, amazing video Matt, spot on, as always.

That's really the thing. I'm so ingrained in the PT workflow and have so many projects in PT it's hard for me to get away from. At the end of the day, I have to be able to get my work done which doesn't leave a lot of time to learn other DAWs.

Interesting review - it feels like the Emperor’s New Clothes story - everyone wants transferable skills and to be current -Pro Tools is in many studios, however, it looks like its lost its way. I have been using it since M-Box My subscription has ended again!!! I'm just going to renew at the lower Aritst version I think and look to switch out to something else. I agree w u on the stock plugins being pretty comparable. I feel like before the AIR plugins were added to pro tools the plugins wee kind of limiting. The Air plugins are quite great. For me, I've been working full time for 20 yrs with Pro tools. For my situation its still the best for me despite the negatives. However, Like you, I wouldn't recommend Pro tools to newbies, especially if your goal is to be more of a producer or you want to create your own music, especially Rap, Electronica, I go for reaper, ableton, fl studio, reason, which come w superior instrument plugins and better midi function. . I'm so deep w pro tools, I' have a nice workflow, so I'll march on until I"m forced to change..If I was forced to change I would use Logic.

This video is so timely. I just moved to Pro Tools from Ableton (still have Ableton). I was wondering if all the frequent bizarre Pro Tools warnings was user error but looks like this isn’t just happening to me. I still love Ableton but hate the send/return limitation and don’t like the audio rack workaround. Also, exporting tracks always results in a stereo file, don’t know why just bothers me. Pro tools is a bit of a turnoff on price. Looks like I need to find another DAW.

I've been spending the last couple weeks fixing Pro Tools bugs. A lot of them are "user error." The number of optimizations and conditions I've had to adjust just to get a stable PT system has been crazy. Even if it's all stuff that the user can fix on their end, is that really still user error anymore?

Not Native VST support, but you can easily run them in PT with a wrapper like Metaplugin, or Patchwork. And with Metaplugin you can add Oversampling to any plugin that doesn't come with it, up to 16x.

Cubase Reason Studio One Logic Pro X Reaper FL Studio Mixbus 32C Serato Studio...anything but ProTools #gang. Stability issues is why I stopped using PTs. Friends of mine still use it and begged me to try it again in 2022. I dl/installed the free version, and it crashed on launch on my M1 MBP.🤷🏾

Love the stock plugins. Not many stock plugins that allow you to solo specific frequencies like Fab filter. Stock eq7 in pro tools can🎉

In the early 2000s while in college everyone recommended pro-tools. Something alway told me to stay away from it. Far away. Kept with FL Studio then went to Logic Pro x. Now I use both. And Pro tools is more dangerous now than ever before.

I don't understand i use protools on a pc and i have no problem at all. My pc is well configured. I must say protools 9 to 11 we're very bugging especially 9. Since 12 it has been a smooth experience for me.

I come from tape and large consoles, Pro Tools is all I’ve ever used once I shifted to hybrid. For me it suits my analog style work flow. I own it and wouldn’t consider renting software. I am curious though, are there other DAWS that have a similar flow and visual? Studio One appears to mimic PT at a glance, but I have no hands on with it. Thanks.

Studio One is pretty similar architecturally, and Logic once you get a feel for it is not too different either.

I highly recommend trying studio one. I switched after having issues with PT12. Hybrid is definitely the way to go!, I either record to SD card on the mixer or send it through to Studio One

@makximumlive that's subjective, my bro. One would argue that Pro tools is regarded as an industry standard and, therefore, the "best" of them all. Personally, I believe that all DAWs are as good as any, and it's all about how comfortable you are in navigating your respective DAW and if it gives you the best workflow and the results you are aiming for. In the end, it's about preference.

Agreed - comfortability is really the deciding factor and basically the only reason I'm still on PT. I think Pro Tools is the *originator* of recording DAWs, they set the standard, back in the 90s. I don't know if that really still holds up today though.

@WeissAdvice we are spoilt for choice now. The market is saturated with competitors. Avid just needs to improve here and there,but I generally still prefer Pro Tools over any DAW. My workflow is seamless, and that "HEAT" option is not available in any other DAW. Which makes it one of a kind.

Considered by many to be the industry standard, but since it's a subscription service it's going to be a hard no from me. You can offer me the best DAW in the world but I'm not paying a monthly or yearly fee for it.

We are all creatures of habit. We get very familiar with one system, and then we have no desire to learn another, often quite different one. Long time Cubase user here. I also use Studio one, but mostly for the mastering environment. The workflow in Cubase is great (for me!), and projects work in both Mac and Windows (besides some rare cross platform 3rd party plugin recall issues). I have avoided Logic because being locked to MacOS makes it inflexible when working with different operating systems.

That is so interesting, I use S1 but never the project page for mastering (no automation drives me nuts). What is it that you like in S1 for mastering?

@@JoeyFTL I actually really like it. I have mastered all of my own music with it. I picked up Studio One 3 many years ago as it was on sale at a great price, then upgraded to version 5 after it came out. 5.5 brought quite a few improvements. I actually think as a DAW Studio one 5 is a lot more optimized than Cubase is. I think that Steinberg need to do a lot better in that regard, but Presonus could learn a thing or two about workflow from them.

It's hard for me to be entirely objective. I've been using PT for 20 years so I'm very aware of both everything I love and everything I hate about it. Ultimately I think it depends on what you're doing.. cop out answer, I know, but that's what it is.

No, stay far away from it. I’d say even if you have the disposable income. That’s a couple hundred dollars every year you could be putting into something else in your studio or advertising for your studio.

My workflow is so fast in pro tools, but it is to pricy and my pro tools is actually very reliable .. customer service, down the toilet! .. I found logic sometimes struggle with to many audiotracks otherwise I probably would do everything in logic because it so much cheaper!

I use FL Studio and not really into changing it…payed ones 180€ for it, few years later bought an upgrade for 99€ (approximately) and the next daw that I consider to try (again) is Ableton (or Bitwig) …and btw I’ve also heard good stuff about Studio One. Nevertheless…most stock plugins are useless…there are soooo many plugins now that I feel really sorry for those who are just starting their journey! I use mostly my UAD plugins, few Waves and Plugin Alliance plugins. Recently bought me Arturia FX bundle…That’s about it. Generally Im happy with lates updates…everything is working fine…I can leave my pc not connected to the internet and I have enough of GAS for the next 10 years! 😂

Limitation gives your creativity steroids! You've got a great selection of plugins that are alot deeper than most users think. Trying a new DAW is also a great limitation. Unknown territory makes you go down new roads - and if it gets too dangerous, be thankful you've got a loyal plugin alliance at your side!

@@andreasaldal415 I grew up with 90s hip hop/rnb and that is the sound Im aiming for… Generally I can make beats using only with FL Slicer and one shot samples - if you talk about limitations …besides that I know enough about audio engineering/sound design. I know my plugins very well but most of the time I use UAD 1176, LA2A, recently more often I use uad neve and ssl channel strips…I also have moog filterS (all UAD)…guitar pedals bundle (UAD)…emt plate, capitol studios chambers, Oceans Way Studios reverbs…uad api EQs, Pulltec, maag studer A800….from PA I use black box and Townhouse bus comp…aiming to get lindell 50 and 80 ch. strips… Generally like I said, I know these plugins very well (and what I’m trying to emulate ITB) but I have stopped playing an audio/mixing/mastering engineer and first of all I focus on composing…Arturia FX bundle was cheap for me 99€ and I bought it only because of mic pres and actually rich choice of delays and other fx… I forgot to say I use a lot of khajergus plugins bundle (sorry if I wrote it wrong) about 20 years old plugins… I also use Waves L2, RBass and RVerb, API 2500 and bus summing (forgot its name) That’s all really…do I need Ableton or limitations? No…I limit my workflow/sessions on my own because I’m lazy and I like simplicity! xD

I use FL Studio as well, but I use Studio One for vocal editing because of how easy it is to record into it, and how easy the volume automation is. FL even after its improvements is still terrible for it.

Don't go with PT, they will ALWAYS have their fingers in you bank account.. when I buy my car outright, it's mine; they don't force me to upgrade it, and if I decide not to, they just make the car stop working.. so .. WOULD that be a fair business process.. I'm done; The latest version I got under subscription is now DEAD, and can't run.. Thanks AVID for making money more important than your customers.

i fr hate protools i think it's trash its not even top 5. pro tools only point is that it was around first so people dont want to change and they coast on that. ableton, logic, studio one, cubase, i havent used fl21 much so idk if the recording workflow is better now but i still want to but it above pro tools because the stock plugins are unmatched imo

The recording workflow in FL is much better but it's still trash compared to other DAWs. That said, I'll never work in any other DAW for my productions because the workflow is just so much better and faster, and also it has prettier colors.

Every Pro Tools user I've ever met hates Pro Tools for every one of these reasons and more. I'm curious how this buyout may or may not affect the market.... in my weird left field opinion I believe Reaper to be the most powerful DAW in the world (being that it is completely customizable) but it's too script and computer heavy for 90% of people to get into it... for context I'm an Ableton producer/Pro Tools mixer. Learned on Reaper, went to FL studio, ended up at Ableton (the workflow is utterly overpowered with the ctrl-f/cmd-f search bar function). Only reason I have Pro Tools is because the dude I'm interning for uses Pro Tools and prefers to just pass sessions that way... Also why in the hell is pro tools so ruthless about plugin inserts? Why is there no undo function for anything plugin related? Only DAW that is so unforgiving with the inability to undo moves...

You can say it, the pricing structure is just bad. No one will fight you there… I think it’s the most expensive DAW, by a lot… I own licenses to 5 DAWs and I’ve spent more on protools than all of the others combined! I’ve paid thousands to keep protools going over the same period of time that I’ve only spent at most like 1500 on all my other DAWs put together. For WAY less than protools alone, I also keep current with cubase, logic, reaper, Ableton, UA’s LUNA, and iZotope Rx (I call it a DAW, sue me). Is there a more expensive DAW out there than Protools?

For one time purchases, Ableton is the most expensive. But I agree the price structure in PT is bad, and makes it the most expensive if you plan on using it for more than a couple years.

@@WeissAdvice that’s true, Ableton was a big purchase, but it was only one time, and not only came with free perpetual updates until it’s time to crosscgrade to the next version (which they make very reasonable), but you can also sign up to beta test their upcoming versions which are always super stable and ready for release, so I just see it as getting early access to their next update for free by being smart, lol. Plus I got Ableton on a promotional discount and it came with some free hardware that they don’t usually bundle in. I count that towards the benefits against protools because I don’t think I’ve ever seen protools go on sale other than Black Friday, and even then it’s not by much. Same goes for RX, if we consider that a DAW, the one time onboard purchase is quite hefty for the advanced version, but then upkeep to gross grade to each next version every 2 or 3 years is like $150, and they also do regular promotional sales and package deals. So yeah, if you’re just gunna use PT for a single project, it’s probably cheaper to go that way than invest in a onetime purchase on cubase, Ableton, rx, etc, but if you plan to continue using it in perpetuity, you’ll keep paying avid the same amount every year, while all those others were one time drops, with the occasional minor cross grade fee much less frequent than avids annual renewal. It only takes like 3 or 4 years for avids upkeep to outweigh all those one-time purchases, and a few years after that, you realize almost all of your “DAW upkeep” budget is going to avid just so PT will work. At least with the other brands, your daw will still work if you don’t upgrade, and if you do pay to upgrade your other DAWs every few years (usually for less than a single years subscription to PT) you’re paying for a new version (next for cubase will be 13 for example) with new features, redesigns, etc, rather than just throwing money at the company so they don’t shut down your service.

Any mixing engineer should ditch Pro Tools for Studio One. I was once using Pro Tools and a whole finished project refused to ever open again. Had to start it all over on Studio One. That was the last day.

Not accurate at all. The midi is actually pretty good once you know it. As far a stability it has had its up and downs over the years but over all pretty rock solid. I as far a tech support what other daw call you actually get someone on the phone 24/7. I’ve found them to be very knowledgeable but I have pt ultimate. It has the lowest latency of any platform. It’s audio editing is far superior to any daw as is it’s file management. It is a very expensive platform to maintain but well worth it

Anyone paying SUBSCRIPTION fees for Pro Tools needs to have their head examined. Avid is just taking advantage of musicians. I would never pay a subscription fee for any DAW. Pro Tools, Studio one, none of them. I use Logic Pro and I also use Reaper.

I've used pro tools for nearly 20 years now. It's fucking shite and totally outdated. I am switching after I finish the current record. The constant crashes or any other annoying thing that happens. There are so many better DAWs like Reaper and Studio One.
