Today we're talking about Avid's announcement of Pro Tools 2022.4. With this new release there are three new versions of Pro Tools available. Pro Tools Artist, Pro Tools Studio, and Pro Tools Flex (Ultimate).
Pro Tools Artist is a new entry-level version of Pro Tools for $99 a year that packs a serious punch. It has some built-in limitations, but for many users it should be more than sufficient for their production.
Pro Tools Studio is very similar to the old non-Ultimate version of Pro Tools with new features such as surround sound capability in Pro Tools and higher track counts and simultaneous I/O.
Pro Tools Flex is a new version that pairs Pro Tools Ultimate (or Pro Tools HD for older folks) with a bundle of extra content. If you're on a subscription you get all the extra features. Perpetual license holders just get access to support plans and upgrades to Pro Tools Ultimate on this path.

I use Logic as well, but Pro Tools still has a better overall editing workflow. I think Pro Tools Artist @ $99 per year is a really great deal. It also opens up collaboration with other Pro Tools users. Logic still comes with a ton of great content and the price is great, but this is a step in the right direction for Avid!

@@TheGearCage the correct comparison is pro tools studio. 299 a year for a slightly better editing? If you learn the key commands Logic's editing workflow is as good as pro tools.

They LOST me at "Subscription"! Not buying into the infrastructure. And, they will never forget their loyal customers... But they ABSOLUTELY will disregard & snub them within a year or so, after they have sold all of their permanent licenses. #Money_Above_All_Developments

People seem to be missing that customer with existing licenses can keep their perpetual license and even continue support plans if they want, but Avid also did bring back upgrades which is huge. So, it's honestly a net benefit for their customers. But, it's actually more complex now so I totally understand the confusion.

Avid must be paying you great or will be providing you a license free of charge. Most professionals in the industry are completely livid with Avid and there anti consumer moves. I had to end up buying a perpetual license from Sweetwater after I tried doing the upgrade from pt 12 and it would not go through. Sweetwater helped me more than Avid, they let me exchange my software code and pay the difference for a perpetual. Even after that, there was a bug where it would not let me activate the new license until my Sweetwater rep bugged them until they manually activated my license. You my friend are in the minority.

If I install this new version with my current perpetual license and say I let the license expire/run out, can I still use whatever version I have when it expired? This won't automatically change the account to a suscription and lose all ability to use the product? I'm scared to install it until it is verified.

Thanks for the info but I wish Avid would just get one or two versions of PT and charge a sensible update fee and stop changing things every few years! 😩 And for the love of god add ARA and give us the ability to select and move multiple faders at once without relying on making groups or VCA… it’s 2022!!!!

Perpetual means as long as your pc works or as long as OS updates allow it to function correctly. So stay away from any and all updates. Otherwise you will repurchase and the cost is ongoing. Forever!

What you didn't say is that you need internet access to use Pro Tools. I travel for work and don't have internet access regularly. Plus with the perpetual license when you go to update to the latest version, you then are on the subscription plan and will also need internet access whereas when you owned the license wasn't necessary.

if you sub and pay monthly the price has gone up. if you sign up for a year and pay monthly or go month to month they have both gone up......as expected....and im sorry but they are not really implementing anything that great. 2 new instruments ? im not sure that is anything to people with some experience who have gotten 3rd party instruments

Yeah, I think the biggest takeaway is the Pro Tools Artist is a great value for people. If you need Pro Tools Studio or Ultimate I think it still makes sense to snag a Perpetual license while you can and just upgrade every few years like it has been.

No plugin updates....no Ara again...and it's the most expensive software investment ?? They certainly don't seem to care about the home studio owners

I don't actually see it that way. They aren't selling new perpetual licenses, but all existing license holders will get to keep on an update or upgrade plan. Pro Tools Studio adds more features for the same money, but I think the BIG deal is Pro Tools Artist opens up Pro Tools for way more people at $99 per year.

@@TheGearCage I respect your opinion. I just hate the fact they are doing away with perpetual licenses. Why couldn't they have just offered the limited "artist" version without raising the studio version and extra $5 dollars and keeping perpetuals an option?.. Pro Tools tying anybody who hasn't bought a perpetual license in for life. Shady shady business practice.

No, they actually work pretty well in their position! I'm actually in the process of doing a 'building your home studio' series and I haven't done/gotten to the Acoustics portion. Once I have an acoustician come in I should be able to fix any potential low frequency issues in the room, but I've been pretty happy so far!

Pro Tools is absolutely killing me at the moment. Am running PT Studio, up-to-date (2022.5), on a brandnew macbook pro 16" 32go m1pro on monterey (again, fully up-to-date), and have been running into very frequent problems of PT freezing, completely at random, It could just be as simple as muting a track in the mix window, tweaking a dial in a plugin, clicking on a clip in the edit window, or selecting an option from the main menu - PT will just randomly freeze. If a track is playing, the audio will keep playing, however PT will just lock up & completely freeze, & then 'Not Respond', leaving me with no other choice but to force close the entire program 🤬 Can’t record Can’t mix 🤯 Just wondered if anyone else has been experiencing this recently??

Hi Ryan, thanks so much for the information, much needed for my choice of purchase for Pro tools! I've decided on Pro Tools Artist.......I've been having numerous problems & crashes with my Pro Tools First, hopefully this upgrade will be smoother sailing? So if you please, I have 2 important questions: Firstly will my 25 compositions, part in the clouds ( I have a yearly subscription 100GB ) & the rest in the project cache ? Will these automatically transfer ? Lastly, do I need to delete or uninstall Pro Tools First as well as the plug-ins package with Pro Tools 1st.?

@@Dante-qf9yd Yes it does but through the x86 Rosetta layer - being native would prevent to have to use it for much better performance -Avid is really late on this as all the others DAW (Live, Studio One and of course Logic Pro) are already M1 native.

Nope! In fact, you’ll be able to upgrade it too. It’s only new licenses that won’t be sold.

If you’re recording with most microphones they’re all mono point source. Think SM58 and U87 etc. all mono.

Sadly Protools lost tere clients from unsupported drivers, software and liscenses. Why buy a program to not be able to use it less than A YEAR LATER with NO REIMBURSAL - So now tey wanna try and fix there issues ??? May as well use Studio One for Windows, or Logic Pro for MAC. Dont get tis limited BS of a program when u can get more for MUCH cheaper by other companies.

Seriously if you think this program is better to stay in a subscription model, you should do something else because the only one able to afford it every year, its major studio recording. Artist independent cant have those expenses every year. Be realistic and humble.

What's sweet deal of 350 bucks for a year?!! PT No longer industry standard. Soon I think cubase and studio one will domain the majority of musician.. Just wait and see.
